GATHERING IN GOD’S NAME PRELUDE Presto from Organ Concerto in F Major, No. 4 George Friedrich Handel WELCOME CALL TO WORSHIP (Psalm 46.12, 5, 7) God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth should change. God is in the midst of the city; God will help it when the morning dawns. The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. PRAYER OF THE DAY God of love and justice, we gather together to worship you: to offer our thanks and praise and to proclaim your goodness and mercy. Breathe your Word into our souls; engrave your covenant of love upon our hearts. Teach us faithfulness and compassion so that our lives may reflect your love and justice to the world. Amen. HYMN 1 Holy, Holy, Holy! Lord God Almighty! (see end of bulletin) CALL TO CONFESSION PRAYER OF CONFESSION (written by Jill Duffield, editor, Presbyterian Outlook) Where do we begin, Lord God? We survey our world and see the inequity and violence, the death of innocents and the exploitation of the vulnerable. We would like to say that we do not participate in such blatant brutality, but when we do not work for justice, stand with the oppressed and speak truth to power, we perpetuate the very things you hate the most. Your prophets tell us plainly that our worship offends you when it is not accompanied by our care for the least among us. We need your help, Almighty God. We cannot right the wrongs of our world or cleanse the sin within our souls without your intervention. We come to you now, humbled, contrite, begging for your mercy, longing for your transformation. We continue with a moment for silent prayers and personal confession. KYRIE 551 (see end of bulletin) ASSURANCE OF PARDON (Romans 5:810, written by Jill Duffield, editor, Presbyterian Outlook) But God proves God’s love for us in that while we still were sinners, Christ died for us. Much more surely then, now that we have been justified by his blood, will we be saved through him from the wrath of God. For if while we were enemies, we were reconciled to God through the death of the Son, much more surely, having been reconciled, will we be saved by his life. Friends, believe the good news, through Jesus Christ we are forgiven. Thanks be to God. GLORIA PATRI 581 (see end of bulletin) PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION (written by Jill Duffield, editor, Presbyterian Outlook) Gracious God, you meet us as we are, but do not leave us as you find us. Send your Spirit and open us to the transformative power of your living Word. Trusting your promise that your word will not return to you empty, we ask that you would use this time of proclamation to form us more in the likeness of Jesus Christ, your Son and our Savior. Amen.

WELCOME

CALL TO WORSHIP    (Psalm 46.1‐2, 5, 7)

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.     Therefore we will not fear, though the earth should change.   God is in the midst of the city; God will help it when the morning dawns.     The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge.

PRAYER OF THE DAY

God of love and justice, we gather together to worship you: to offer our thanks and praise and to proclaim your goodness and mercy. Breathe your Word into our souls; engrave your covenant of love upon our hearts. Teach us faithfulness and compassion so that our lives may reflect your love and justice to the world. Amen.

HYMN 1  Holy, Holy, Holy! Lord God Almighty!  (see end of bulletin)

CALL TO CONFESSION

PRAYER OF CONFESSION    (written by Jill Duffield, editor, Presbyterian Outlook)

Where do we begin, Lord God?

ASSURANCE OF PARDON                                                (Romans 5:8‐10, written by Jill Duffield, editor, Presbyterian Outlook)

But God proves God’s love for us in that while we still were sinners, Christ died for us.

PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION    (written by Jill Duffield, editor, Presbyterian Outlook)

Gracious God, you meet us as we are, but do not leave us as you find us. Send your Spirit and open us to the transformative power of your living Word. Trusting your promise that your word will not return to you empty, we ask that you would use this time of proclamation to form us more in the likeness of Jesus Christ, your Son and our Savior. Amen.

ENCOUNTERING GOD’S WORD FIRST READING    Psalm 44.13‐26

You have made us the taunt of our neighbors, the derision and scorn of those around us. You have made us a byword among the nations, a laughingstock among the peoples. All day long my disgrace is before me, and shame has covered my face at the words of the taunters and revilers, at the sight of the enemy and the avenger. All this has come upon us, yet we have not forgotten you, or been false to your covenant. Our heart has not turned back, nor have our steps departed from your way, yet you have broken us in the haunt of jackals, and covered us with deep darkness. If we had forgotten the name of our God, or spread out our hands to a strange god, would not God discover this? For he knows the secrets of the heart. Because of you we are being killed all day long, and accounted as sheep for the slaughter. Rouse yourself! Why do you sleep, O Lord? Awake, do not cast us off forever! Why do you hide your face? Why do you forget our affliction and oppression? For we sink down to the dust; our bodies cling to the ground. Rise up, come to our help. Redeem us for the sake of your steadfast love.

SECOND READING    Jeremiah 8.18‐9.1

My joy is gone, grief is upon me, my heart is sick. Hark, the cry of my poor people from far and wide in the land: “Is the Lord not in Zion? Is her King not in her?” (“Why have they provoked me to anger with their images, with their foreign idols?”) “The harvest is past, the summer is ended, and we are not saved.” For the hurt of my poor people I am hurt, I mourn, and dismay has taken hold of me. Is there no balm in Gilead? Is there no physician there? Why then has the health of my poor people not been restored? O that my head were a spring of water, and my eyes a fountain of tears, so that I might weep day and night for the slain of my poor people!
