Preface

What a delight it is to see the Gates CambridgeScholars program continue to grow and succeed as it enters its fourth year. There have now been nearly450 Gates Scholars from over sixty countries; highlytalented young men and women from all over theworld stretching their minds and abilities whileenrolled at the University of Cambridge.

But the rewards of this program are beginning to manifest inmore than students getting excellent graduate education. Thereare now over 200 Gates Scholars who have completed theirstudies at Cambridge and are putting their knowledge andexperience to work in a variety of settings – from inner-cityclassrooms to global NGO’s. They are bringing new vision inseeking solutions to the world’s pressing issues, and are apply-ing their education to the benefit of society at large.

As a result, each new class of Gates Cambridge Scholars hasbigger shoes to fill. But it is clear from reading the profiles inthis yearbook that they are all smart, imaginative people whoare already aware of the many needs to be served in thisworld. That awareness coupled with a Cambridge educationwill prepare them to be the authors of significant change – byhaving the intelligence to see the injustice and inequity in theworld, having the courage to commit to addressing that dispar-ity, and having the ability to find solutions.

I welcome the new class of Gates Cambridge Scholars, andwish you an enriching time during your studies at theUniversity of Cambridge.
