Mary PappMary grew up in Vulcan, Michigan, a small town in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. She was raised on a dairy farm, dreaming of someday owning her own horse, showing Holsteins in the meantime.

Mary is married to Joe Papp, Site Manager at The Rogers Group in Bloomington, IN and has three wonderful children, AJ, a police officer for the City of Killeen, TX; Amber, a senior at Purdue University; and Alek, a senior at Bloomington High School North.

She has loved horses all her life. They started with two horses eleven years ago as something for her and Amber to do together. Mary loves to trail ride, was show mom for Amber during her 4-H years, and even helped run back cattle at local team roping events. Last November, she bought her first real show horse, Baby Jane Weidner, a 12 year old chestnut Quarter Horse mare by This Vesters Mine and out of Heart of Dirty Larry, that had been put out to pasture. It was after buying “Jane” that she became more serious in learning how to ride and show. They were two girls on a mission!

Mary boarded Jane over the winter with an indoor riding facility in preparation for their first AQHA Show … and a big one it was, at Gordyville Spring Event under 8 judges! She was thrilled with a 6th place in Showmanship out of 23 for their very first show! They continued their journey, improving at each show they attended and earning AQHA and IQHA points in Nov Am Showmanship and Nov Am Western Pleasure (showing at 20 AQHA Shows as well as Open Shows at Valley Riders in Franklin, IN) qualifying them for the first ever Novice Amateur Championship Show. They will be compet-ing in Nov Am Showmanship and Nov Am Western Pleasure at the Novice Amateur Championship Show.

Mary has had a lot of help from her daughter, Amber, and wonderful friends: Marla Miles, Carie Smith, David Roberts, Sue Stunk, Cheryl Whiffen and Donna Halstead. Her husband, Joe, has been a trooper, helping with hauling and set up at the shows, then off with their youngest son to his dirt bike races.

She has a wonderful job with Hawthorne Direct, a direct response advertising agency with headquarter offices in Iowa and Los Angeles, where Mary has worked for over 17 years. She has the great pleasure of managing advertising campaigns for 3M, Bose, Lifestyle Lift and Oreck. All are very supportive of her “horse habit”, looking forward to updates after each of her shows!

This has been an amazing first year for Mary. She has met many new friends along her journey. She is looking forward to competing at the Novice Amateur Championship Show as well as making it to the AQHA Congress and World Show someday soon!

TAKING ON THE WORLD!

By: Paul Sullivan

Details by Paul.......

You’ve always dreamed of qualifying for a major breed world show, and now you’ve done it! But qualifying is just the first step in your quest of winning the gold. Once you receive your invitation, or decide to attend the show if an invitation is not required, you’ll need to begin making plans and start a countdown to show time.

When making your entries, this is the time you’ll need to decide how many stalls you will need, including tack stalls. Often tack stalls can be shared with others you select and some shows will match you up with others when stalls are limited. Now is also the time that you’ll need to either make camping reservations for you trailer or make hotel reservations. Many times large shows make deals with local hotels for better pricing for their participants. Always check with show management or the hotel to check for special rates. If camping, you will need to reserve your space, as well as find out if the campground has water, electric, and a dump station if your stay is longer than a couple days.

If you will be traveling out of state, you will need to check with show management to find out the health requirements for horses at-

tending the show. Typically you’ll need a six month Coggins test as well as a 30 day health certificate. Some states may require other tests, so you need to make sure you have the paperwork done within the time parameters the show and/or state requires. Next it’s time to make a timeline to the date of departure. This will help to keep you on track, and to get as much accomplished as you can without rushing and forgetting something. Simply start about thirty days before departure, and assign one or two things to each day. This can be anything from packing your tack trunk, to taking clothing to the cleaners.

You’ll need to also make an appointment with your farrier to have your horse’s feet done. This will need to be done at least 1 to 2 weeks before your event. A freshly shod horse on too much hard ground can spell disaster too close to a major show.

With a little organization and planning ahead you can remove a lot of the stress, and spend your time concentrating on your perfor-mance and enjoying the ride!!

Equipment Rules

A dedication to putting the American Quarter Horse first has led the AQHA Executive Committee to make changes in AQHA rules as far as equipment use at all AQHA-approved shows and approve a structure of fines and penalties that will be assessed to violators of these rules. All of these changes are based on recommendations from the AQHA Animal Welfare Commission, which was appointed ear-lier this year by the Executive Committee to ensure the welfare of the American Quarter Horse. The Executive Committee also approved the Animal Welfare Commission’s definition of abuse: Any excessive and/or repetitive action to cause obvious distress or discomfort to a horse. By November 2012 and to coincide with the 2012 AQHA World Championship Show, new equipment policies will be in place. The policies are published on AQHA’s website, and exhibitors, owners and trainers have until November 1 to ask questions and become familiar with the policies. Beginning with the 2012 AQHA World Championship Show in November, the following training equipment, in addition to that listed in the AQHA rulebook, will not be allowed at any AQHA shows:

1. Prohibited training equipment at all AQHA shows include riding in a curb bit without a curb strap, wire or solid metal curb straps no matter how padded; wire cavessons; wire or cable tie-downs; bumper bits; metal bosals, no matter how padded; chambons; headstalls made of metal (even if encased in a protective material); twisted rawhide or rope (3/8-inch rope may be used with a slip (gag) bit with a smooth mouth piece only); running martingales with curb bits; or draw reins attached between or around the front legs.2. No one is allowed to ride a horse with a curb bit without a properly adjusted, approved curb strap or curb chain.3. A running martingale may be used with a snaffle bit only.4. Draw reins may be used on the show grounds as a train-ing device so long as they are attached no lower than the elbow of the horse.

“The greatest danger to our industry is the inhumane treatment of our horses during their training and the resulting appearance

in the show ring,” said Jim Heird, executive professor and coor-dinator of the equine sciences initiative at Texas A&M Univer-sity, and chairman of the AQHA Animal Welfare Commission. That means training practices that cross the line, misuse of equipment, regardless of how humane one wants to claim it might be, and things like this have to become a thing of our past, said Tom Persechino, AQHA executive director of competi-tion and breed integrity. “While we may disagree on particular points or pieces of equipment, there is common ground between trainers and where AQHA is headed,” he added. “The vast majority of train-ers and exhibitors are good people who have the best interest of the horse in mind. “Regardless of the number of people who are using equip-ment improperly or harshly, the use of all equipment needs to be addressed and horsemen and -women need to understand that it only takes one person to create a negative perception of our industry,” he said. “We are living in a very different time where social media, technology and people’s unfamiliarity with the horse industry constantly puts us in a defensive mode. It’s never been a goal to punish but to bring about change and protect our horse and our industry before someone else decides what is right and what isn’t.” Persechino suggested that if anyone has any of this equipment in their trailer tackroom, “we’re suggesting that you take it out now and don’t even bring it to the show – it is not allowed on the show grounds. Again, this is about protecting the horse.”And the fines and penalties have been established to deter people who might even think about abusing a horse or using illicit drugs, he added. “The fines and penalties chart further illustrates the consequences of breaking the rules,” Persechino said. The AQHA Animal Welfare Commission also recommended – and the Executive Committee approved – the formation of an AQHA Grievance Committee that will consider fines and/or penalties to include suspension from competition or even suspen-sion from AQHA as meaningful deterrents. The grievance com-mittee will also investigate other forms of penalties and educate and hold owners to a higher level of accountability.

As muscles develop during training, they lose flexibility and develop tension. Tight muscles SHORTEN STRIDE, contribute to BAD ATTITUDES, cause POOR PERFORMANCE, and contribute to INJURIES.

Equine Sports Massage helps relax the muscular system, increase flexibility and range of motion, and helps prevent injuries. Massage speeds recovery from injuries, reduces stress and promotes relaxation.

The pinnacle we have reached here in Tennessee has truly been a team effort, and I have been repeatedly humbled by the amount of support received in pur-

suit of this dream. The list of people to thank is long; they’ve helped make us who we are today, and if I

have forgotten them in my mind I haven’t in my heart:

My ever-patient husband and best friend, Dean; train-er Drew Sutton and his wife, Joy; Dr. John Clarke

& Hillview Veterinary Clinic, farrier Greg Taylor and chiropractor Daryn Hall; the Civils family; Final Cut Show Clothing (Signe Nicholson), Country Saddlery

(Julie Benter), Discount Boots & Tack (Matt Main) and The Sewing Lady (Bonnie Boggs); Chris Rodenhuis, Denise Amick, Jo & Dane Meyer, Nikki Hall, Valley

Riders Saddle Club, and all other honorary members of “Team Tucker”.

And of course my partner Tucker: sometimes patient, sometimes not – and never truly “innocent” – but al-ways ready to give your all; you’re the best, bar none.
