SACRAMENTS
Reconciliation/Confession
Saturdays 2:45 p.m.—3:45 p.m. St. Matthew Church.
Thursdays 5:45 p.m.—6:45 p.m. All Saints Church.
1/2 hour before daily Mass.
For personal appointment please call the rectory.
Baptism/Marriage
Please call the rectory to make arrangements. (For wed-
dings, please call at least six months in advance of your
planned wedding time.)
Communion/Anointing the Sick
Due to privacy laws priests must be asked by the family
members to visit parishioners in the hospital or nursing
home. Please advise us of those in need of the Church’s
ministry, whether they are homebound or have been hospi-
talized. We are happy to bring the Eucharist to those who
cannot get out to attend Mass. And if someone is ill or
declining in health, the pastor is happy to come to their
home, anoint them and bring them Holy Communion.
Please call the rectory, and we will make the arrangements
for you.
Cemetery Arrangements
Gate of Heaven Parish has four cemeteries—Calvary
Cemetery, Water Street Cemetery, St. Matthew Cemetery
and St. Margaret Cemetery. You are always welcome to
make arrangements for your eventual burial in one of
these cemeteries, as three of the four have sites to lease.
Please call the rectory in order to ask about end-of-life
preparations.
Parish Bulletin
If you, or someone you know, is homebound, please call the rectory and let us know.
We’d love to send them the weekly bulletin so they can keep up with the goings-on in the parish.
Also, if you are a snowbird, and head south or west for the winter, we can also get the bulletin to your winter address.
That way you always know what’s going on here at home!

driving if you want to meet Him.
Parish food drive . . . Our parish is conducting a
food drive to benefit folks in
our area who need assistance.
Your generosity has been
inspiring, and this parish
plays a huge roll in keeping donations alive. There are boxes
or bins in each of our churches., and they will be there
throughout August. Items needed are canned meat or fish,
soups, canned fruits and veggies, peanut butter, pasta,
grain products (such as brown rice, whole grain bread,
bagels or muffins that can be frozen), cereal, baby food,
pancake or muffin mixes that require only water, season-
ings like garlic, salt and pepper. Don’t forget personal items
like deodorant, soap, shampoo, toilet tissue, toothpaste,
toothbrushes, shaving cream and feminine hygiene prod-
ucts. Diapers and baby wipes are also needed. Thanks for
your help. God bless you all!
Your E-Give donations . . . It has come to our attention that many of you who have been
using E-Give for your sacrificial giving to the parish, have
noticed that your donations are no longer being taken out—
that they ended abruptly in May 2018. You may recall that in
June of last year E-Give changed the finance com-pany that
handles these donations, and if you were an E-Giver then
you had to go back into the system and re-register. We have
just learned that when donations began again in June, an end
date of May 2018 was given, instead of leaving the donation
date open-ended. Your donations are very important to the
parish. If you notice that the gifts you set aside are no longer
being taken out of your account, please go back online and re
-register. It’s easy to do, and you will see where you can put in
an “end date” or simply leave the donation “open-ended.” We
apologize for this inconvenience, and appreciate your patience
and understanding.
Solemnity of
the Assumption
of the Blessed Mother Next week, August 15, is
the Feast of the Assump-
tion of the Blessed Virgin
Mary. For Catholics it is a
holy day of obligation. On
Tuesday, August 14, there
will be a Vigil Mass at 6:00
p.m. at All Saints Church.
On the feast day itself, Wednesday, August 15, there will be
three Masses. The first will be at 7:00 a.m. at St. Matthew
Church in Whitefield. There will then be a Mass at Our Lady
of the Mountains Shrine at noon. And then, at 7:00 p.m.,
there will be an evening Mass back at All Saints Church.
Rectory office closed . . . In addition to the regular Tuesday and Friday closing, the rec-
tory office will be closed in recognition and in honor of the
holy day, The Assumption, on Wednesday, August 15.
Bulletin weekly Mass schedule . . . You may have noticed the change in design for the first page
of our weekly bulletin. As you read across the lines for
Mass intentions you will see the day, the date, the time of
the Mass and which church will host the celebration. The
next column will reflect the saint or saints whose feast day
it is. (If there is no saint’s feast on that day you will see the
word Feria—it means a day in the church calendar when
no feast day appears.) The column then reflects the inten-
tion for whom the Mass is being offered. If it appears with
a cross (), it means the person is deceased. Without the
cross, the intention of the Mass is living.
Would you like to make your weekly offering automatic? Just
go to our parish website—gateofheavennh.org—and press the
E-Give logo. Fill in your answers and your donation will auto-
matically be withdrawn from your bank account or charged to
your credit card on a schedule you instruct.

CATHOLIC TRIVIA
The Hail Mary is based on two passages
from the Gospel of Luke. Name these
two passages.
Answer: The Annunciation and the Visitation.
RCIA. . . Are you attracted to
the Catholic Church,
but are not a Catholic
yourself?
Are you a Catholic
who never completed
all your sacraments?
Are you interested in what the Catholic Church
teaches?
Are you seeking a place to learn about faith
without any pressure?
Then RCIA is for you. RCIA (Rite of Christian
Initiation for Adults) is a gradual process that pro-
vides answers to your questions about fulfillment of
sacraments you may have missed. Knowledge and
information about our Christian faith. Answers for
the questions you may have about your relationship
with Jesus Christ, or how to begin one. You are all
welcome. If you are interested please call Fr.
Schultz or Sue Tibbetts at (603) 788-2083.
“Follow me.”
The last time I went into a confessional I found
myself pondering how I felt like I was in an upright
casket. And, fittingly, each and every time I tell all
that I have done, upon absolution, I am made new.
When I exit that tomb, I experience
a spiritual resurrection. —from The Princess Guide

Weekly Readings Sunday August 12, 2018 DISCUSSION QUESTIONS
1 Kings 19: 4-8 / Psalm 34: 2-3, 4-5, 6-7, 8-9 / Ephesians 4: 30—5:2 / John 6: 41-51
All three readings have examples of people complaining in different ways. Paul contrasts two ways
of life. One way, a complaining and dissatisfied life, results in “bitterness, fury, anger . . .” In the other
path, the life of the Spirit, others are treated with love and compassion and everyone strives to be
“imitators of God, as beloved children who live in love.”
In the First Reading the prophet Elijah is despondent. The king and queen of Israel seek to kill him
because he had destroyed the prophets of Baal. Afraid, Elijah calls upon the Lord to end his life,
saying that he has suffered enough. In the midst of his complaint the Lord strengthens Elijah with
food. This food renews Elijah and he sets out to “the mountain of God, Horeb,” where the Ten Commandments were given to
Moses (Deuteronomy 5:2).
The people of Israel also complain against Jesus in John’s Gospel today as the “Bread of Life Discourse” continues. Jesus contrasts
the bread that he is to give with the bread that their ancestors ate. Their ancestors ate the bread and died. On the other hand, Jesus,
the true living bread, guarantees eternal life for all who eat of it. John goes on to explain that “the bread that I will give is my flesh
for the life of the world.” The idiom “flesh and blood” is a Hebrew way of referring to the “whole person.” Here John deliberately
connects the Death of Jesus and the Eucharist. By eating of his body, the bread of life, Jesus promises the fruits of his Death and
Resurrection: eternal life and a living relationship with God.
As God sustained and renewed Elijah’s life, so Jesus now sustains his followers through himself, “the living bread that came down
from heaven.” The Eucharist is the true food for our life’s journey.
1.) Why do “the Jews” complain in today’s Gospel?
2.) How would you explain the connection between the Eucharist and Jesus’ Death and Resurrection to a newcomer?
3.) In your own experience how does the Eucharist renew you and give you a new sense of strength for your life’s journey?
Catholic Charities Appeal update . . . This past April Catholic Charities launched its annual appeal
to the parishes of the North Country. The goal set for Gate of
Heaven Parish was $15,500. Barely months into the campaign
our parish has donated $11,650. And there are still pledges
coming in! Your generosity assists Catholic Charities in their
work in our own communities. Those in need are helped with
counseling services, and healthcare services. Catholic Charities
also offers adoption services and immigration legal services.
They sponsor the New Hampshire Food Bank and help
members of our own parish and local community. Their an-
nual appeal is the major way you can offer your assistance in
their work. But there are other ways as well. Catholic Charities
often seeks volunteers. If you have an older vehicle that is still
in good working condition, you might consider donating it to
Catholic Charities. They, in turn, will provide a family with a
vehicle so the head of household or other able family member
can get back and forth to a paying job to help support the
family. Thank you all for being so generous to those who
need our help. You are truly inspiring!
