Pre-Primary
After all the festivities and frolic, it’s
time for some serious work.
“ All work and no play makes Jack a
dull boy” as the saying goes. The
children of T2 enjoyed learning about
food the fun way – cutting, colouring,
sticking to make a healthy food plate.
Students learnt about the different
food groups and the nutrition value
of these groups. “Eat healthy to live
healthy” they all agreed at the end.
As the children of T1 walked in, their
eyes beamed with astonishment and
surprise to see their classroom turned
into a super market and a walk-in
restaurant. It was great to see the
children shopping for healthy food as
well as cooking it.
Along with learning to eat right,
exercising and sleeping habits, they
also took part in a fun art activity
about the life cycle of an apple tree.
As a part of the food and nutrition
topic, our little nursery babies
enjoyed a fun-filled work experience
activity kneading the dough. Children
enjoyed mixing and pouring flour and
water in the bowl and creating
different objects such as roti, wiggly
worms and ladoos.
They also created a paper plate pizza
topped with vegetables such as
mushroom, capsicum, olives and
tomatoes.
Touch me Not!!!
Children of T1 and T2 got to
understand the difference between
good touch and bad touch when our
school counsellor Anusha Iyer took a
lively session with them.

Religions in India
United we stand, hand in hand
Love and Peace is all we need
Learning and understanding different
religions of India, their morals and
values was quite insightful for Grade
1 .Presenting their creativity on the
same was fun and informative. We
appreciate the cooperation and
support given by the parents in
making this topic an interesting one.
Learner macht uns Spaß! Grade 2 had a nice cognitive learning
session with the topic:
Schulsachen (Things used in school).
The students had to point out things
called by the teacher. This was a
group activity the students had fun
doing in their own class. So that they
can name them daily. Spaß beim
Lernen!!
Fix the Prefixes and suffixes The class of Grade 2, last Monday
had an interactive activity on Prefixes
and Suffixes. As they have been
learning to identify the root words,
they had a great time sorting some
words into the common prefixes and
suffixes they are used with.
The goal was to get them to identify
the common prefixes and suffixes.
We discussed each word and
students even came up with two
ways in which the suffix ‘er’ is used.
Sometimes to denote a person’s
profession like in ‘teacher’ and
sometimes to show a comparative
degree like ‘stronger’.
Check out our book shelves! Students of Grade 2 have been
learning about the reasons why
authors write. To extend this learning
we decided to collect newspaper cut-
outs showing different purposes of
the author. Also we sorted our library
books on our shelves according to the
right purpose of the author. All the
story books fell into the ‘Entertain’
section whereas the non-fiction
books fell into the ‘Inform’ section.
Student’s first sorted a handful of
random books given to them on their
desk and then went ahead and placed
them in the right section on the
shelves. We could easily identify the
purpose. The kids came to a
conclusion that our class library had a
lot of books which ‘entertain’ less of
books which ‘inform’ and none which
‘persuade’!

Let’s check out the Force we
exert! Students of grade 2 had a first-hand
experience of using a force meter and
comparing forces of things. As we
have been studying about force, it
was fun to know how much force is
exerted by the common things
around us like a masking tape, wet
cotton etc.
The goal was to get them
acquainted with the force meter and
its purpose. We compared the forces
of different objects too!
Being Responsible 'Being Responsible' is an innate value
that we possess as social beings. Be it
responsibilities that surround
ourselves or be it responsibilities
surrounding the greater good of our
country...Every single duty is
imperative for growth.
In the personal skills class our grades
3 to 5, discussed this topic in detail.
The themes that emerged in this
discussion revolved around their
responsibilities as a student, as a
family member, as a friend and as an
Indian.
The topic of owning up/accepting a
mistake committed by self was also
highlighted. This was believed to be
the most important responsibility we
undertake.
These discussions were concluded by
a scenario based experiential learning
by our creative Grade 5 students.
A group of 4 students from each row
came up with a role play and drama
emphasising the importance of 'Being
Responsible'.
The rest of the students were the
esteemed panel giving constructive
feedbacks and criticisms on each
team's role play.
Students enjoyed this activity as each
of them were extremely involved in
the activity.
Circuits
Students of grade 5 have been
learning about series and parallel
circuit. On Wednesday we did an
activity for understanding series
and parallel circuit.
They were able to figure out the
difference between the series and
parallel circuit and their
excitement was evident!!!
FIGHT INFECTIONS - KNOW
ABOUT PHYTOCHEMICALS
Phytochemicals are non-nutritive
plant chemicals that have
protective or disease preventive
properties. There are more than
thousand known phytochemicals.
It is well-known that plant
produces these chemicals to
protect itself but recent research
demonstrates that they can
protect humans against diseases.
Some of the well-known
phytochemicals are lycopene in
tomatoes, isoflavones in soya and
flavanoids in fruits. They are not
essential nutrients and are not
required by the human body for
sustaining life. "Phyto" is a Greek
word that means plant and
phytochemicals are usually related
to plant pigments. So, fruits and

vegetables that are bright colors
— yellow, orange, red, green,
blue, and purple — generally
contain the most phytochemicals
and the most nutrients.
Foods containing phytochemicals
are already part of our daily diet.
In fact, most foods contain
phytochemicals except for some
refined foods such as sugar or
alcohol. Some foods, such as
whole grains, vegetables, beans,
fruits and herbs, contain many
phytochemicals. The easiest way
to get more phytochemicals is to
eat more fruit (Papaya, cherries,
apple,...) and vegetables
(cauliflower, cabbage, carrots,
broccoli,...). It is recommended to
take daily at least 5 to 9 servings
of fruits or vegetable. Fruits and
vegetables are also rich in
minerals, vitamins and fibre and
low in saturated fat.
Vitamins and minerals make fruits
and vegetables healthful enough,
the extra compounds they contain
called phytochemicals or
phytonutrients pack in even more
wholesomeness.
To stay fit. Ensure your plate is
filled with colours...

The Self-Evaluation Tool With term exams round the corner,
German students of Grade 8A
conducted a self-evaluation activity in
class, where they reflected
objectively on and critically evaluated
their own progress. They identified
gaps in their understanding and
capabilities as regards the recently
concluded unit and discerned what
aspects needed improvement and
how.
It was the first time that the students
were evaluating themselves and the
atmosphere in the beginning was a
bit unsure. However, they followed
the teacher’s instructions and as they
went about their self-evaluation
tasks, they gradually started feeling
quite comfortable at it. Having solved
the exercises in the self-evaluation
sheet, they rated themselves on the
basis of three benchmarks: Very
Good, Good, Not so Good.
The self-evaluation results are now
up on a chart in the classroom, which
gives the students and the teacher a
view as regards the learning progress
of the students and the aspects that
need focus and improvement.
This activity inculcated a sense of
confidence, achievement and
independence in the students,
thereby promoting autonomous
learning.
GICL MUN 2016 MUNing is a very essential part of a
student’s journey towards their
responsibilities in the real world. It
allows discussion of real life issues
happening around us and the
possible and sensible solutions that
countries can come up with together.
We at GICL this time extended our
session of the MUN to a two day
conference where the students from
Grade 7 till 12 represented as
delegates of different countries and
committees like the Security Council
(SC), World Health Organisation
(WHO), Social, Cultural and
Humanitarian Committee (SOCHUM),
FIFA and United Nations Office of
Drugs and Crime (UNODC). Our
students got an exposure to various
foreign policies and the format and
skills required in a formal debate.
Students enthusiastically participated
in all debate sessions. In spite of
being first time MUNers and younger

to other participants, some of our
Grade 7 students also took efforts to
put forth their views during the
sessions. Some committees were also
involved in writing resolutions. Our
IBDP students took up the role of Co-
Chairs for the committees.

Our ICT teacher Ms. Palak Mehta
participated in an extension (face-to-
face) training of IGCSE ICT on 23rd
September and 24thSeptember at
Hyderabad, conducted by Mr. David
Bird (Examiner for IGCSE ICT). The
workshop focused on teaching
strategies and planning, an
understanding of mark scheme and
the overall correction process. This
session gave the opportunity to the
teachers who participated from
different schools to share their
experiences and concerns.
IBDP
University Fair GICL had its first University Fair
exclusively for students and parents.
We had the honour of hosting some
of the renowned universities like
Indiana University, Purdue University,
Skema Business School, University of
Dayton and Broward College.
There was an overwhelming
participation by the parents that
made this event successful. It was a
great opportunity for the parents to
interact with the University
Admission officers directly which they
found extremely helpful.
