PTFE, graphite, asbestos free fiber and in special casessilver and aluminum are used. The coveringlayers are usually attached to thegrooved metal gaskets with anadhesive. The thickness of thegasket as installed is in-creased by the compressedthickness of the coveringlayers. For austenitic pipelines, vessels and valves layers of PTFEor graphite are recommended. The covering material is either mounted without an adhesi-ve or using an adhesive with low chloride content.Metallic covering layers for nar-row gaskets withb < 0,5 d [mm] can be manu-factured as single inner eyelet. For b > 0,5 d [mm] two-piecejacket is proved.

Profile gaskets are available to Kempchen works standardWN 100, WN 101, WN 136, WN 146 and WN 147. Groo-ved type gaskets to DIN 2697 are also available.Gaskets to work standards 100 and 101 are designed withonly a single gasket width for all pressure ranges.According to theory the gasket width b = (d - d )/2 shouldincrease with larger nominal pressures. The simplificationin Kempchen standard 100 and 101 is possible because ofthe very large differences of and , as stated in the app-lication safety factor S = / .For difficult applications, e.g. high pressure and temperatu-re changes, external forces and moments the gasket widthshould be determined referring to Kempchen publication"The Optimization of Static Gaskets".

CONVEX gasket frames for rectangular flanges are weldedas mitre joints. Grooved gaskets are hard soldered.Gaskets for raised face flanges or for flat flanges are manu-factured with a centering ring to center the gasket with thebolts. Centering rings less than 10 mm are a single partwith the metal core. For wider centering rings a relievinggroove is machined (figure 1). For applications with gase-ous media it is recommended to use a loosely mountedcentering ring. Loosely mounted centering rings are alsoadvantageous for large temperature gradients between theinner and outer diameter. This type centering ring is eithermounted in an outside groove (figures 2-4) or spot weldedto the metal core (figure 5).

Materials of Construction

Grooved gaskets have been proved successful in all indu-strial applications. Grooved gaskets are found in conventio-nal power plants as well as in the primary circuits of nucle-ar power plants. In the first case e.g. as heat exchangergaskets or as closure gaskets, in the second case e.g. asmanhole gaskets at the steam generator or at the standuppressure vessel. Also in the chemical and petro-chemical industries groovedgaskets have shown excellent results, particularly whereboth high-pressure and temperatures resulting high boltloads are to be controlled. In order to protect the flanges from damage caused by thegrooved gaskets sharp edges, these gaskets are used inpractice with covering layers of PTFE, graphite, A.F.S.*,aluminum or silver. The flanges are then entirely protected. The profile geometry is selected to relate to the thicknessof the covering layer of 0.5 mm (or in special case 1.0 mm).Kempchen has developed different profiles in order to meetthe varying properties of the covering layer materials. However, the purpose of the relatively soft covering layersis not only to protect the flanges but also to seal at low mini-mum contact pressures. In the recesses of the groovedgaskets, filled with the layer material a triaxial state ofstress is created. For these gaskets only the gasket sup-porting ring or the flange material limits the loading capaci-ty. Consequently the stability of this combination is consi-derably higher than that of pure PTFE, graphite, A.F.S.*,aluminum or silver gaskets.Kempchen manufactures grooved gaskets from DN 10 upto a diameter of 3600mm. Also manufacturing facilitiesexist for larger diameters, customer requirements and ovalor frame gaskets. For heat exchangers with baffles the gaskets are equippedwith grooved ribs.

The sketch depicts centering rings for a nominal gasketthickness of 4mm.

The groove crests of the standard profile are located in aplane and the groove roots are parallel to them. This de-sign is similar to DIN 2697. The soft sealing layer thicknessis 0.5mm for graphite, A.F.S. *, aluminum and silver and0,35mm for PTFE.

This profile type should be used preferably for tongue andgroove or male and female flanges. Kempchen standard123 defines the minimum requirements.

Critica l note s on Gasket s withou t LayersAccording to DIN 2697 grooved gaskets can be used wi-thout covering layers. In general relatively soft metal isused to avoid the grooves from damaging the flange surfa-ces. To prevent this damages gaskets with soft coveringlayers are preferably used. The groove crests have a widthof about 0.1mm. The contact diameter b is calculated asb = Z·0.1, an equal surface pressure assumed. Z is de-fined as the number of teeth in the grooved profile.Grooved gaskets without covering layers have hollow spa-ces and no steady sealing behavior. In operation the groo-ve crests get compressed. This leads to a sealing width ofb > Z·0.1.Therefore Kempchen does not recommend using groovedgaskets without covering layers.

Profile is designed for tongue and groove and maleand female type joints. For raised face and flat face flangesprofile is the proper choice. For high temperatures and gaseous media between innerand outer diameter profile with loosely mounted cen-tering ring is recommendable.Grooved gasket ring is designed purposefully to fitgroove to groove flanges.

Surface pressures

The soft layer material of the convex grooved gasket deter-mines the minimal required surface pressure .

The maximum allowable surface pressure at temperatu-re determines the force the gasket has to withstand. Themetal core material determines .

Profiles , , and are "convex" groo-ved gaskets. Compared with standard design they havebetter sealing behavior. The crests have - as all other profiles - the same parallelplane. Bottoms of the grooves however follow a convexroot form. Soft sealing covering layers of plastically moldab-le material form a thick padding in the middle of the profile. The higher specific contact pressure in the middle causeslocalized extraordinary good flow of the sealing coveringlayers into the flange surfaces unevenness and roughness. The soft sealing layer thickness is 0.5mm for graphite,A.F.S. *, aluminum and silver and 0,35mm for PTFE.The "convex" Grooved gaskets to profile B27A, B29A,B25A and E27A minimizes edge pressure due to flangerotation.Standard gaskets lift at the inner diameter under flange rota-tion conditions (about 1 degree max.) because the mainforce of the flanges is located more towards the outer sideof the gasket diameter. With the newly developed profilesB27A, B29A, B25A and E27A the contact diameter b ispreserved. These gaskets are particularly suited for flangeconnections under cycling pressures and temperatures.

CONVEX Gaskets

The soft sealing surfaces are easily and safely mounted onthe convex shaped metal supporting surface with a nearlychlorine free adhesive. There are no grooves which couldbe filled with adhesive. The soft sealing layers are completely supported by thesmooth surface of the convex metal ring. In comparison togrooved gaskets, where adherence lines are on the crests, the convex surface offers a more secure adherence to themetal core even for sensitive soft sealing layers. To facilitate handling, mounting and to prevent damagebacking edges protect the soft sealing layers. It is possibleto provide aluminum or silver metal layers. Convex gasketsas opposed to DIN or Kempchen Standard grooved typegaskets, flat or convex designs have the advantage in theelimination of the stress concentration in the groove bot-toms.Damage due to stress corrosion cracking that occurs inzones of internal stresses or higher stresses due to in ser-vice conditions are therefore eliminated. Also damage dueto load reversals that are possibly caused by a leakage stre-am are not expected to occur with the new convex gaske-ting with covering layers.Another means to reduce internal stress, even under hightemperature differences, is the loosely mounted centeringring.Up to an including diameter of 3600mm convex gasketscan be machined in a seamless finish.Convex gaskets in frame shape e.g. for use in rectangularheat exchanges with right angle flanges can be supplied.References for pressures in excess of 200bar exist.
