GARLINGTON ESTATE
NEWSLETTER
SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER
Volume 3 / 2019
We have had an exciting week with a fun filled Halloween celebration and of course the winning of the World Cup rugby. In both cases we witnessed a community and a country coming together. As Bishop Tutu said “ we are a special country with extraordinary people, on such days as this we understand that when we pull people together the sky is the limit, when we believe in ourselves we can achieve our dreams”
In the last two months we have had both our AGM and an EGM (extraordinary general meeting) and although in both meetings there were a number of heated discussions I felt it was great that people were willing to stand up and share. Many of us listen to the story in our heads, the story we tell ourselves, which is so often not the real story. Estate living is community living and its always good to learn the facts before expressing your thoughts and feelings. I felt in both these meetings we had the opportunity to delve into the facts and people were then allowed to express their thoughts and opinions. Ultimately I hope that
people left feeling a little more enlightened and saw value in what the management team and the Board have achieved over the past year.
Dave Woollam was co-opted onto the Board as a Director, he has proved to be a great asset to the team and really got stuck into understanding much of the history to Garlington ensuring he understands all the facts before sharing his insights and opinions. Dave is a CA and will be overseeing the finances of Garlington, he will be working closely with Neville who has so kindly kept an eye on this portfolio for the past 2 years.
Our Gym/ Sports facilities committee has been formed and had their first meeting last week. Thank you to Gerald West for driving this initiative. We look forward to greater clarity on gym matters and formalizing the SLA between the Gym owners and the GHOA.
In our last Board meeting the topic of dogs was tabled and there seems to be a growing trend of people neglecting the rule of only
having 2 dogs on their property. This puts the Board in an awkward situation as its really difficult to ask a family to get rid of, in most instances, a much loved pet. The Board resolved that the fairest way to resolve this growing problem was to fine residents every month that they have an extra dog. What was more surprising was the number of people who have actually bought an extra dog while living in Garlington and been fully aware of the two dog rule. There are also many dogs in Garlington who have not been registered at the office and don’t have tags, when these get out we are issuing fines for not abiding by the rules.
Wishing all the children who are studying for exams and writing matric much success in the weeks ahead, the holidays are not too far away.
Warm regards
John
ESTATE NEWS
Hullo all
The end of another year is once again in full
sight, hard to believe it is eight weeks until
Christmas.
We have had a busy year with the preparation
for the re-surfacing of the roads and relaying
of French drains being the two largest projects
undertaken. As previously stated the final sur-
facing of the roads should be undertaken in
Feb, March next year. This once again means
detours, road closures and parking away from
your home for a period of time. Please bear
with us as the end product will be so worth the
inconvenience.
One of the most time consuming tasks the
office has to deal with is breaches, pets being
top of our list. In fact, the majority of disputes
lodged with the Ombud service in the first
quarter of 2019 were pet issues.
Please familiarise yourselves with these rules
to avoid receiving a warning from us.
A huge thank you to those residents that do
comply.
5 Daughters have installed additional cameras
in the gym, which are monitored in our control
room allowing security to have closer scrutiny
of the facilities and the users.
With the increasing costs of electricity and the unreliability of our service provider we realise that there will be more and more of our members installing solar panels. In light of this it has been necessary to revise the guidelines for solar. Garc is revising the architectural guidelines to include guidelines for solar. Please note that all solar installations will now be required to be submitted to Garc, together with a sketch of the proposed installation site, pamphlet and specs prior to installation. Solar panels are to be placed as unobtrusively as possible in respect of both road side aspects and potential adverse visual impact on the amenity of neighbouring properties, panels erected on flat roofs may not protrude above the parapet or be mounted on any
angles structure and flat panels are to be installed lying in the same plane as the roof i.e. flush.
In celebration of the season of Christmas
cheer, Garlington is hosting Carols by
Candlelight on the 2nd December, don your
Christmas hat, bring along your picnic basket
or order from the restaurant and join friends
and neighbours for an evening of
entertainment by the talented
Tanya Nicholson. Further details will be
circulated closer to the time.
The office will be closing on
Friday 20th December and re-opening on
Monday 6th January 2020.
In case of emergencies please don’t hesitate
to contact Brad or myself on our cell phones.
‘Till next time, Karen

NEW RESTAURANT AT GARLINGTON OPENING 3RD DECEMBER 2019
Josephine’s Restaurant and Delicatessen is a family run restaurant with a strong emphasis on locally sourced, quality
ingredients. We aim to provide a high quality range of meals based around the seasons.
Our winter menu will contain lots of roasted meats and slow cooked stews while the summer menu will highlight all the
local springtime salads, seafood and light bites. As Hilton tends to be on the cooler, rainy side – our standard French classic
‘Beef Bourguignon’ will make a regular appearance on both menus.
We will be open for Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner – see opening times below.
Josephine’s will also have a new delicatessen which will sell freshly baked croissants, pastries, cakes and a good range of
breads all baked the traditional Italian way using a wood fired oven. The deli will also stock newspapers, some quality
cheeses, cold meats, milk and other carefully selected goods. Our deli is also home to our in-house florist ‘Blom Botanicals’
which will launch in the new year. We will be taking orders for our delicious Christmas mince pies and birthday cakes from
around the 2nd week in December.
Our staff are waiting with open arms to welcome you into our family friendly space on the 3rd December. We look forward
to cooking for our local Garlington residents as well as the public.
“The name Josephine comes from my Spanish father Joseph / José. I was then given the middle name Josephine and I’ve
carried that tradition on by also giving both our daughters the middle name Josephine. Our concept is all about a cosy,
beautiful place to meet and create happy memories over good food and wine”
Owner, Bonnie Josephine Minnaar
