Tēnā koutou katoa ngā whānau, The Club Garin Colours Awards set the scene for celebration early in the week. We

gathered as school and community to celebrate and recognise excellence in the areas of arts, sport and service. It is wonderful to reflect and recognise the diverse range of skills and talent our students share and the commitment they have made over the past year to excel in their chosen field. Congratulations to all students receiving Colours in 2019. It was an absolute privilege to welcome our guest speaker Ms Hazel Wilks who is a past student from Garin. Garin has values of “Justice, Service, Compassion” said Hazel, and she went on to explain that “ these aren’t just nice words - but words that translate to tangible actions that impact people's lives”. Capturing our students attention, Hazel encourage all students to apply themselves to their education, seek God's direction to carry them through and to be of service to others. “When you do this,'' said Hazel, “doors can open and dreams can be realised that we never thought possible.” Thank you Hazel, having you as a graduate student of Garin share your life, Faith and Wisdom with our students, staff and community is inspirational.

The gift of service our students so generously provide each year is significant and essential to the growth of culture, wairua and Catholic Special Character within Garin. "Faith Facts" Week 3 - Term Four

Pope Francis has asked all Catholics to celebrate a special ‘missionary month’ in October 2019. Pope Francis has set October 2019 as an Extraordinary Missionary Month to foster greater awareness of the Second Vatican Council’s decree on missionary activity, mission ad gentes - ‘To the Nations’ - and to enliven the missionary transformation of Church life and pastoral activity.

Garin College students have reflected on this call by reflecting on what their mission is. They were called to respond to the following questions:

What are the gifts and talents God has given to me to enhance the lives of others?

How can I use these God given gifts here at Garin College and beyond?

Extraordinary Missionary Month Prayer

God, help us make it possible for all people to experience the saving love

and mercy of Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

One God, forever and ever.

Year 10 Cross Curricular Learning

Currently in Religious Education & English (10 E) we are exploring the theme of Power through a text study & the Reformation Period. Students are reflecting on different forms of power and how we are called through our faith to work for justice & equality through our saviour Jesus Christ. We will be applying Psalm 31: 8 - 10 “Speak out on behalf of the voiceless, and for the rights of those who are vulnerable. Speak out in order to judge with righteousness and to defend the needy and the poor”. We look forward to sharing our learning journey with you in the following weeks.

Theatresports Success!

First, the senior Theatresports group that attended the South Island finals at The Court Theatre last term (John Noble (Year 12), Jed Frethey, Megan Ritchie, Jade Alborn, Hamish Shelly (Year 13) performed terrifically for a 2nd place, beating all of the Christchurch schools, and being pipped only by a strong John McGlashen College team from Dunedin. They won the 2nd and 3rd rounds in the scoring, and certainly had the momentum and crowd support but couldn't quite overcome a points difference from the outstanding Poem the Dunedin team improvised in Round 1.

Super Shakespeare Recipient!

Also, Megan Ritchie, was selected from her course in the last holidays at the National Secondary Shakespeare Production, to have a place in the NZ Youth Shakespeare Company, a distinguished group of only 20 actors, who travel to London to perform at the Globe Theatre. This was turned down by Megan when she weighed it up with her education plans for next year.

Garin has had a student selected for the NSSP in 4 out of the last 5 years, and we have had 3 of those

students get through to the NZYSC. A superb strike rate for a small school!

Garin College End of Year Mass

All parishioners, parents and Garin College community members are warmly invited to

attend the Garin College End of Year Mass next Tuesday 5th November (11:30am), in the College Gym.

We will celebrate the journey of our Year 13 College students and leavers of the College as they enter a new stage in their journey.

Congratulations to Zac Griffith who over the weekend competed in the

33rd Sun City Nelson Country Music Awards held in Richmond. There were over 380 entries from people as far away as Invercargill and Tokoroa. Some of the categories had up to 30 entrants competing for the 2 spots in the finals. Zac made 8 finals and won 7. He was Intermediate Overall Runner up with his duo partner Maddison Con-nor and Intermediate Overall Winner of his Gospel entry. That means that currently, he is the Intermediate Overall Winner at Westport, Blenheim and Nelson.

Year 12 Journey In 2019 the Year 12 Journey was held at Canaan Downs on the top of the Takaka Hill because in 2018 as year 11 students we were unable to complete this section of the journey programme due to the major slips that wiped out the road to Golden Bay.

It was an exciting trip filled with a lot of fun activities and even a rare treat that we don't see a lot in Nelson- snow! Over the duration of camp each group did one or two activities each day. These activities included rock climbing, caving, mountain biking, and navigation.

On the first day we arrived at camp and were bustling with a sense of joy, excitement and anticipation as well as trepidation. We got off the bus to sort our tenting arrangements and complete some group team building activities then after lunch we headed out on our first activity. There were four activities and my group did navigation first. We climbed up a hill and got so lost that it felt like even the instructor barely knew where we were. Once we found our way we went to “Harwoods Hole” which was a pretty cool sight and a mecca for spelunkers everywhere. We then returned to camp for a well earned meal of burgers and chips.

On the second day of camp we woke up to the sound of snow sliding on our tents. As we got up and out of our tents the sun was shining and the campsite was covered in snow. The sunrise was amazing and the snow was beautiful. The vans couldn’t get out of the campsite due to the snow. We spent the morning having snow fights, making big snowmen and snowballs, and sitting round the large fire. We then packed up the campsite whilst we waited for the snow to melt in the afternoon sun, and then got shuttled out to Marahau.

In the evenings we reflected on each day and our call to servant leadership.

On the last day of camp we went caving. The van dropped us off at the site. We got our helmets with headlights and a briefing, then used ropes to make our way down the muddy slide into the cave entrance. The cave was damp, muddy and dark. Once in the cave we walked carefully and crawled our way through very small openings which at times made it very claustrophobic and muddied our clothes, the views were great though. We eventually got out of the cave and drove back to the campsite to have lunch before writing our final reflection and taking the bus back to school. By Yang Hong Liu

Kia ora Garin whānau

This week is the last full week for the Garin seniors.

After a busy year, sometimes we need to remind our-selves that it is okay to feel! Okay to feel happy, sad, tired, excited or anything else in between. Here is a cool wee graphic from Journey to Wellness that can serve as a reminder when we need it the most!

Have a great weekend.

Last week, we held a student vs teacher quiz. The twist was that when a team correctly answered a question, they had an opportunity to pelt the opposing team with water balloons. The students' team was made up of Hannah Price, James Johnson, Molly Langelaan, Megan Ritchie, Sierra Pope and Zara Harris. The teachers' team was made up of Mr Allan, Mrs Cornelisen, Mr Foster, Mr Maxwell, Señora Davies and Mrs McGahern. Throughout the quiz, Jed Frethey and Hamish Shelly put on a fantastic show for the audience as MCs. In the end, the teachers won the quiz, but it’s fair to say the students won the battle of the balloons. A big thank you to everybody who helped set up this event. Amy and Dylan

Summer Reading

Relax & Read “Books can enrich children’s lives beyond measure. Exposure to other people

and cultures, whether directly or indirectly, does extraordinary things to children. It opens their heads and crams wonderful things inside. It relaxes their hearts, softens their emotional boundaries, and enriches their minds with alternative ways of thinking and being… In a world that so often teeters on intolerance and segregation, it’s vital for children to be exposed to different ways of thinking and being. It is also vital that this exposure happens at a young age and stretches across many and varied multicultural experiences; before time, world-weariness, and bias have a chance to take root.” Tania McCartney, from Connections Issue 97 (used with permission).
