I t is no t on ly su rp rising bu t a l i t t le b i tfunny that the resignation of four Naga Peoples’Front (NPF) MLAs o f Man ipu r has at last been“o ff icia l ly” accep ted a fte r one comp le te yea r.Though it took one year in this regard but in theca se o f Y . The NPF MLAsha d g i ve n the ir p ap e rs i n th e f i r st w ee k o fSeptember last yea r following the passing of theinfamous three bills dubbed as anti-tribal by thetribal community o f the state . NPF MLAs a llegedthat no opportunity was given to them to opposethe bil l. It was also pointed ou t that the Hi ll AreaCommittee (HAC) was del ibe rate ly bypassed .Above a ll, the NPF legislators resigned in protestagainst the state government’s alleged tramplingof the “Naga inte rest”. It was not on ly the NagaMLAs bu t the entire tribal MLAs who were to ldto quit the assembly by some tr ibal based civilorganizat ions in pro test against the passing of“an ti - tr iba l b i lls”. Though the NPF MLAs hadsubmitted their resignation pape rs then but theNaga MLAs and min isters of the ruling Congressparty never cared to follow suit. So was the casewith the rest o f the tribal MLAs and ministersthough it can’t be denied tha t some MLAs fromChurachanpur d istrict have pu t in their pape rsunder pressu re from the civil socie ties on ly tow i t hd ra w th e sa me b e f o re i t re a ch e d t h eSpeaker’s table. During the last budget sessionof the state assembly certain MLAs had rid iculedthe Speaker that the resigned NPF MLAs hadcontinued to enjoy salaries and perks. Women develop gestationaldiabetes more in summer

Planning for pregnancy during the summermonths may not be a good idea as you may

be at an increased risk of developinggestational diabetes, a study says.

The study revealed that there can be 51 per cent risein the incidence of the high blood sugar condition due toa possible peak in the temperature.

The study examined seasonal patterns in glucosetolerance and in the diagnosis of gestational diabetesmellitus -- a form of high blood sugar affecting pregnantwomen.

The results indicated that the summer months (June-August) were associated with an increased glucose leveland a 51 per cent (or 1.5 times) increased frequency ofgestational diabetes compared with the other seasons.

"Our findings suggest seasonal variations in the 2-hourglucose concentration and in the proportion of womendiagnosed with gestational diabetes with a peak in thesummer," said Anastasia Katsarou from Lund Universityin Sweden.

The temperature-induced changes in peripheral bloodflow may affect the composition of capillary blood,representing a mixture of arterial and venous blood andthus increase glucose levels during the warmer summermonths, Katsarou explained.

For the study, a total of 11,538 women underwent auniversally applied standard 75-g oral glucose tolerancetest (OGTT) in the 28th-week of pregnancy during 2003-2005 in southern Sweden.

The OGTT results from the 3-year study period weregrouped together into months and seasons.

Out of these, a total of 487 women (4.2 per cent) werediagnosed with gestational diabetes during the studyperiod.

The monthly frequency of gestational diabetes rangedfrom 2.9 per cent in March to 5.8 per cent in June.

The seasonal frequency ranged from 3.3 per cent inspring to 5.5 per cent in summer. The differences werestatistically significant for both month and season.

Mean monthly temperature ranged from -0.6 degreeC in the winter to 17.7 degree C in the summer, the studysaid.

Further analysis showed that the 2-hour glucose levelincreased by 0.009 mmol/L for every degree increase intemperature and this corresponded in a difference of0.15 mmol/L between winter and summer.

However, these associations were no longer apparentwhen also adjusting for mean monthly temperature,suggesting that temperature could be part of the reasonfor the differences.

The study was recently presented at 2016 EuropeanAssociation for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) meeting inMunich, Germany.
