Tim ReinemannQuality of Life SupervisorNomination: “Tim came into work on Mother’s Day to make Belgian waffl es for all the ladies. Many comments were made on how wonderful and delicious the waffl es tasted. Tim made everyone happy on this special day. Th ank you Tim, from the staff and residents.”

On the first Friday of June, the Felician Sisters and Christians throughout the world celebrate the high feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. On this day we recall that God himself was not content to love

mankind, as it were, “from a distance,” but rather that he came among us as a man as well, loving the world he created with a human heart. All the affections and sentiments that we can experience in our own

lives were found also in the incarnate Son of God, Jesus Christ; purified and poured out for us on the Cross. Thus at Felician Village we display the image of Jesus throughout our campus, noting that wound in his side which became a door of mercy, releasing the flood of divine compassion and tenderness that dwells in his Sacred Heart. It is comforting to know that God shares so intimately in our joys and our sorrows. O Sacred Heart of Jesus, change our hearts and make them more like yours!

Th e launch of electronic medical records took place on 6/01/16 in Next Step. Once all the “bugs” are worked out, the plan is to move for-ward into long term care. Th e launch took dedicated time and a lot of planning but we are moving forward to a better and higher technical level for keeping and maintaining medical records.

Kudos to all the staff who have helped make this advancement possible!

Memorial BricksMusic & MemorySilver Lake Col-lege and Feli-cian Village are partnering to off er an exciting to opportunity for our residents by enhancing the Music & Memory pro-gram. Silver Lake College was awarded a grant from Great Lakes Career Ready that extends through August 2018. With this grant, Felician Village will have two students, Emily Laurin and Katherine Sohn, working with the Music & Mem-ory program and our residents with de-mentia for 20-24 hours per week per stu-dent beginning this summer. Music &

Memory is designed to provide pleasure to persons with Alzheimer’s or dementia by fi nding a renewed connection in their lives with music. Th e interns will spend time with our residents getting to know what type of music they enjoy and then load an individual iPod just for them. Sr. Lorna will be overseeing the grant and students. Felician Village became cer-tifi ed by the Wisconsin Department of Health Services for our Music & Mem-ory program in September of 2015. We hope to continue the program through the fall semester and expand our pro-gram to include the Silver Lake College music department as well as incorporate the Alive Inside Foundation.

Quality Matters

from the Director of Quality Management

Brenda Georgenson

Quality Management PrinciplesTh ere are eight quality management principles that are the basis for the development of a successful Quality (Business) Management System. Th e development of such a system provides the fundamental structure that leads and assists an organization to operate in a systematic manner. Th e adherence of such a system promotes continual improvement, while addressing basic needs throughout the organization. Th e eight principles are as follows:1. Customer focus. Organizations depend on their customers and therefore need to understand current and future needs and should strive to exceed customer expectations. At Felician Village our customers are our residents and their families.

2. Leadership. Leaders establish unity of purpose and direct an organization with the goal of achieving the organizations objectives.3. Involvement of people. All levels of the organization needs to be fully engaged in this mindset.4. Process approach. All activities/departments are

linked together with a common goal. A great example of this is our care teams; a multi-disciplinary approach to problem solving for residents and a team approach for resident care and satisfaction.5. System approach to management. Managing in a way that considers the links between departments. Th is approach promotes eff ective and effi cient processes that support meeting the goals of the organization.6. Continual Improvement. Monitoring key outcomes and comparing them to internal goals and comparative data positions an organization to be in a constant state of looking for ways to improve.7. Factual approach to decision making. Using data in decision making

at all levels of the organization.8. Mutually benefi cial supplier relationships. In our industry, developing relationships with associated organizations within the community is crucial to our livelihood. Th ough these principles were developed by quality gurus over a decade ago, they certainly refl ect many aspects of QAPI (Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement), a fairly new initiative being mandated by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) for long-term care facilities. Th e goal is to provide the highest level of care and resident satisfaction consistently. Th is proves this concept can be successful in any industry.

Aft er four months of planning, evaluation and deliberation, our three-year strategic plan and 2016-17 budget was submitted to our Board of Directors for approval at our Annual Meeting on May 24. Both were approved and now will be sent to Felician Services, Inc., for fi nal review and approval before the end of June.

Th is is VERY good news. While we continue to provide quality, compassionate care for our residents, we have a lot of exciting initiatives to address over the next year and beyond. A key initiative, which was also an initiative in the 2015-16 budget year, is the continued expansion of dementia services. Although we made great progress over the past year with development of our Dementia Center of Excellence, there are some important actions to fi nish.

As the long-term care environment continues to change, Felician Village must also be positioned to change. As the leader in senior services in Manitowoc County, we continue to reach out into the community, along with local partners, to identify and meet unmet needs of seniors.

Felician Village is well positioned to continue as the leader in senior services in Manitowoc County. For SIX straight years we have been voted “Best of the Lakeshore.” Voting in the HTR’s “Best of the Lakeshore” contest starts June 7 so vote for Felician Village as best nursing home, assisted living, senior independent living, and rehabilitation service.

Of course these accolades would not be possible without YOU. Th ank you for choosing to live at Felician Village. No matter where you live on campus, our staff is here to continue the ministry of the early Felician Sisters who founded St. Mary’s in 1887. We are proud to continue this healing ministry of Jesus by providing compassionate care that respects the dignity of each person we serve.

Let’s be “Best Of ” SEVEN years in a row!
