Griffith is the place to be in October this year with the Festival of Gardens and Citrus Sculptures being the major attractions. This year we have nine fabulous gardens opening that will provide an amazing experience for serious gardeners and novices alike. Some of our previous favourite gardens are opening again and some spectacular new gardens will also be on display. Expansive country gardens and compact town gardens displaying the owner’s passion and creativity will provide enjoyable visits in restful and colourful surroundings. The Citrus Sculptures will once again be sponsored by the Real Juice Company and will line the entrance to Griffith along Banna Avenue. In 2014 there will be more than 60 incredible sculptures, including a castle, gondola and kangaroo just to name a few. These sculptures are unique to Griffith and must be seen to be believed.Additional attractions this year include the Paella by the Sculptures on Friday 17 October and the Italian Table with special guest Tino Carnevale at Pioneer Park Museum on Saturday 18 October. Tino will be visiting many gardens during the festival, his enthusiasm and gardening expertise will ensure any garden visit will be a pleasant experience. These new attractions will provide opportunities for visitors to enjoy 2014 Griffith Festival of Gardens and its varied attractions……food, wine, galleries, museum, shopping and parks. Griffith is definitely the city to visit. Come join us!Pat Cox, Chair Festival of Gardens Committee.

Events October 2014

Born and bred in Tasmania, I have a background in Horticulture and Landscape Design but my main interests are Edible Plants and a hands on approach to home gardening. As well as being a presenter on ABC’s Gardening Australia, I teach gardening skills to both adults and children and am a regular contributor to magazines and blogging website GardenDrum. My garden is fairly new and so far it’s been a lot of very enjoyable hard work. The front garden is nearly finished and the lawn and perennial border have just gone in. The chicken coop is built and filled with tenants and I have finished the potting shed. The fruit trees and berries are all planted and the vegie patch is in full swing. With that said there is still the pizza oven to build, a netting structure for the berries, a cubby house for my daughter Eden and a lot of digging still to do.

Keep an eye out for

Tino’s Tipsthroughout the

program!

Real Juice Company Citrus Sculptures

On display 12 – 25 October

The Citrus Sculptures are a unique event in Australia and a feature of the Griffith Festival of Gardens. Now in their 19th year, the sculptures have grown from just five in 1995 to more than sixty large 3D sculptures lining Banna Avenue, Griffith’s main street in 2014.The sculptures are based on the famous lemon sculptures in Menton, France and with Griffith being a major citrus producing region in Australia the sculpture idea was a good one. After consulting local engineers and contacting France, Griffith was granted permission to use their method of securing the fruit. The Citrus Sculptures have become a major visitor attraction bringing thousands of people to Griffith every year.In 2013 and 2014 Real Juice Company signed as the naming rights sponsor of the Citrus Sculptures, offering both a wonderful synergy and the opportunity to continue to grow the Festival. Real Juice Company is a local juicing business. The sculptures are erected early on Sunday morning by an army of over 700 community volunteers. More than 100,000 oranges and rubber bands are used to construct the sculptures. It is a fabulous community event with schools, local businesses, banks, cultural, service and church groups, and multi-national companies working side by side to create magnificent sculptures. As this is a free exhibition, any donations will be greatly appreciated and can be made at the Visitor Information Centre. The Riverina produces one third of Australia’s citrus and is one of the major orange production regions in Australia. Our unique combination of water security, fertile soils, advanced farming practices and warm climate produce some of the highest quality citrus fruit on the global market.

1. Cass & Wayne: 10 Blumer Avenue, Griffith

Our 15 year old suburban garden is highly structured, very colourful and well loved. The front uses 90m of high and low hedges to divide the garden into distinct rooms, each of which offers its own character and privacy. The back is equally structured, but even more colourful, with a superb use of space. Our 240 roses, which despite being a feature, are only a small part of the overall effect of colour and style. We offer a wonderful example of what can be achieved right in the centre of town.

Exotic hybrid clematis entwine over garden structures built by Bruno, admire the gazebo which contains hand painted porcelain and fine bone china (on display and for sale). Enjoy the delightful vegie garden which features Bruno’s espaliered fruit trees. This truly is a garden for all seasons and is at its most desirable in spring!

8. Pat Jones: ‘Yambiana’, 69 Halse Road, Yenda

Glimpses of the Mirrool Creek can be seen through the native box and saltbush as visitors travel down the driveway to the Yambiana garden. On approach to the garden, visitors are welcomed by a long hedge of oleanders to their right, and a forest of gums to their left, set off by a feature pond and dry stone wall. Through the formal gates are long established native trees complemented by mature deciduous trees, silk trees, crepe myrtles, massed roses, banks of chinese jasmine, geisha girls and gardenias. Irises and agapanthus add a sculptural touch to the garden and its expansive lawns. The original tank stand and windmill remain as features of the garden, which is also home to peacocks and pets.

An expansive outback homestead garden where design, style and simplicity are of paramount importance. Very little garden existed when Julie and Bruce moved to Corynnia in 1982. Cool, soft colours are favoured in mass plantings of rambling, hardy species of perennials, roses and succulents. Robust hedging creates structure & formality to areas. The orchard & vegetable garden within are highly productive. Designed for and nurtured in a harsh environment on the edge of the Hay Plains, this garden is often described by visitors as ‘an oasis in the desert’!

Tino’s TipsSalt and vinegar on chips is a match made in heaven but it is also a potent herbicide when diluted in water and put in a sprayer. Small

amounts of vinegar will lower the soil ph and help to deter ants and it makes a great cleaner of tools like secateurs. Some plants, like asparagus, will love it if you throw a small amount of salt at them.

Watch out though, too much will make the soil toxic for plant growth, just ask the ancient Mesopotamians.

More than 60% of the people of Griffith have Italian heritage, and the early migrants brought with them their traditions of agriculture, market gardening and their passion for food. Visit the Italian Museum to capture the social history. Open daily: 9:30am - 4pm T: 6962 4196
