Angels Among UsIn her own words, local angel Pat Potter describes her cancer journey:

M y journey with cancer started in 1992 when I was diag-nosed with colon cancer, which had grown through the

colon wall, resulting in radiation treatment at Wyoming Medi-cal Center with Dr. [Robert] Tobin. This was before the days of early detection by colonoscopy. I went through six weeks of daily treatment and enjoyed 19 years of remission.

In fall 2011, I felt a lump in my breast. While dressing, I leaned over and there it was. While standing up or lying down though, it couldn’t be felt. Whew, nothing to worry about ... but I did. During a normal breast exam, neither my doctor nor surgeon could feel the lump, but the mammogram/ultrasound confirmed it was there. Treatment included lumpectomy, che-motherapy, and radiation at Rocky Mountain Oncology. While there, I met the most wonderful, considerate, friendly people. My care was of upmost importance to them—all of them in both chemo and radiation. I met Joanie, a long-time volunteer who gave me juice, a snack, and inspiration that I too could do what she does by making a tough time easier with a smile and cheerful attitude.

I was introduced to the angels program and found even more people who care about cancer victims. Now I bake, drive, feed, and encourage other patients. It’s a very rewarding feeling for me and hopefully for those I come in contact with. My message to all women is, don’t stop with your normal breast exam ... lean over!

The Wyoming Medical Center Foundation’s Angels program serves hundreds of cancer patients every year, in addition to relieving the tremendous burden experienced by caregivers. This program has a rich history of addressing the varied concerns of cancer patients, which include offering emotional support, financial assistance, transportation, and medication retrieval.

The Angels meet on the third Thursday of every month from noon – 1:00 p.m. in the Conwell Building at Wyoming Medical Center. If you would like to make a positive impact on another person in need, please consider becoming an Angel volunteer or making a donation by contacting the Wyoming Medical Center Foundation at 577-2973.

What prompted you to start your own business?I love the challenge of finding the perfect unique gift for some-body. I was finding more and more great products that Casper

didn’t offer. I decided the spring before my younger son was to start kindergarten to just go for it and open my own gift bou-tique. I wanted it to have a very happy and fun environment.

Describe what your Company does: We are a charming, unique, and lively gift boutique with all products “good for her.” There are a large variety of products: home décor, accessories, handmade jewelry, candles, amazing lotions, witty wall décor, gift books, etc.

Anything extraordinary/unique that your Company does:I feel the store serves as not only a shopping experience you won’t forget, but also entertainment.

Given your business expertise and the nature of what you do, what advice (whether general or specific) can you offer to the residents of your neighborhood? Take care and support each other and the town that we live in. Our town is as good as the people in it.

How did you decide on this industry (events that led up to where you are now, where you went to school, etc.)?

I saw the need to offer something a little different. I grew up in a family of entrepreneurs, so I was ready for the challenge.

What section of the neighborhood do you live in and how long have you lived in the neighborhood? I live in the Eastgate area. We have lived there for close to 11 years now.

Where did you grow up? Tell us about your family… I grew up in Cody, Wyoming. My parents, along with my older

sister and her family, are all still in Cody. I loved growing up in a small Wyoming town, and I feel so blessed to be able to raise my own children in Wyoming. I have a wonderful husband Bri-an, who is the owner of Ugly Bug Fly Shop located downtown and Crazy Rainbow Fly Fishing and Wing Shooting. I have two beautiful little boys, Brice (9) and Brody (7).

What are you your hobbies/interests?I love to spend as much time with my family as I can, run, hike, do anything outdoors, read, make jewelry, and travel.

Garden Creek Falls is pleased to provide an opportunity for resi-dents who are involved with a charitable organization hosting a local fundraising event to place a Charitable Event Announce-ment in our magazine free of charge. The announcement can run either the month prior or the month of the event inviting your fellow Eastgate residents to participate. Since the magazines arrive in the Eastgate mailboxes the first week of each month, timing is important! For an announcement to run in a particular month’s magazine, it must be submitted no later than the 10th of the month preceding the event (example: May 10th is the deadline for an announcement that is to run in the June magazine).

aroundtownLEGoSWyoming’s 2012 First Lego League Champion (FLL) team, Veni Vidi Duci-Green, headed to California for the FLL North American Open Championships in May of 2013. The team represented the state of Wyoming and competed against 72 teams from across North America and South Korea. Veni Vidi Duci, which means “I Came, I Saw, I Calculated,” formed three years ago when a group of home school families decided this would be a great way for their chil-dren to expand their understanding of science, technology, engineering, and

mathematics. The team consisted of 9 – 14 year old students from Natrona County, Wyoming growing from 7 to 15 students. The large team was divided into Veni Vidi Duci Green and Blue based on their research interests for this year’s theme “Senior Solutions.” Both teams had great success this year with the Blue team receiving first place for their research and 6th place in the robot challenge out of 60 teams from across Wyoming. The Green team won the Champions award and 2nd place in the robot challenge.

For this year’s competition, each team interviewed senior citizens and researched methods that would enable a senior citizen to stay connected, indepen-dent, and engaged during their golden years. Research is only one of the four

components that the team competes. Teams must build and program an NXT Lego robot to perform various tasks on a competition board in which the team only has 2.5 minutes to solve as many components as they can. The robots are autonomous and rely solely on the team’s engineering and programming skills to complete each task. The third portion of the competition is the robot design. Students must describe to a set of judges how they used sensors (light, color, ultrasonic, touch), created algorithms, made conversions, developed gear ratios, programmed, and engineered their robot to meet this year’s challenge. The final component of the competition is to dem-onstrate the eight core FLL core values. Two of these values, gracious profession-alism and cooperation, really make this competition unique.

Since the Wyoming FLL Championships in December, Veni Vidi Duci worked hard redesigning their robot, which is now 4 times faster than it was in December. New programs were written allowing their robot to complete more tasks during the robot competition. They volunteered at area assisted living homes logging over 70 hours. Students raised funds to help pay

for the trip to the competition by knitting scarves, making jewelry, and holding a garage sale. The team would like to thank the following for making the FLL North American Open Championships a reality: their parents, Central Wyoming BOCES, Natrona County School District, Wyo-ming Machinery, Industrial Crates Inter-national, University of Wyoming/Casper

College Center, Casper College, and Wyo-ming NASA Space Grant Consortium.

Resident RecipeStrawberry Pinwheels:(This is one tortilla which yields 8-10 pinwheel bites. Increase as needed.)

one Large Flour Tortilla

1/4 Cup Sliced Fresh Strawberries

1/4 Cup Peanut Butter

Spread the peanut butter liberally on the flour tortilla, spread out the sliced strawber-ries, roll it up, then slice. Usually the form will stay better if the rolled up tortilla is refrigerated prior to slicing, but it is not necessary. They are prefect for picnics and out-side play date snacks, I usually make extra on play dates as the other kids like them a lot too :) This can also be modified with just pb&j, Nutella, peanut butter and honey.

This family owned business opened September, 2012 by Charles and Merry Jane Walsh in the Wolcott Galleria. When they moved to Casper 7 years ago, they had a vision for offering residents a banquet facility that included specialty vendors for one-stop event planning. Cooking and wine are two passions for Merry Jane and Charles, so opening the olive oil store was completing a part of that vision.

The store is filled with more than 20 balsamic vinegars and 14 extra virgin olive oils. They also have a few specialty oils, gour-met cheeses and salami, oil infused chocolates, pasta, and more. The evening started with complementary wine and a sushi bridge from Dsasumo. There was a brief but informative pre-sentation about the vinegar making process, distinction of olive oils, and suggestions for pairing with different foods. Residents then were served spinach salad with cranberries and almonds, delicious bruschetta, and fresh berry salads to pair with their choice of the various oils and vinegars. If you haven’t tried bal-samic vinegars before, here are a few ideas for serving

preciouspetsMeet Eddie!

How long have you lived in the neighborhood? I’ve only been here for a couple of weeks as I am just 12 weeks old. My fam-ily happens to have 6 people, 7 including my big brother Milo, who is way older than me. He’s 56 in dog years!

Where/why did you get your pet? Is there a story behind its name? Please include your pet’s breed/age if applicable.

They got me from a nice lady named Lesley. I had two sisters; one was black and one was fawn. I miss them a lot. My mom was black like me, but my dad was a fawn like my big brother Milo! My human dad has always wanted a black pug named Eddie. As you can see, I’m super cute and very social.

What special talents/quirks does your pet have? I actually have quite a few! I love running up the stairs, although I can’t get down yet. Luckily my human sisters and brothers help me get down. The other thing that I do is push a beach ball around the yard with my nose; everybody in the family thinks that is pretty funny and cute! If you tickle my belly I grab your hands, the humans think that is also pretty cute and funny! I am working on potty training, but sometimes I still have accidents. My owners just don’t know when I need to GO! When you gotta go, you gotta GO!

What’s the funniest story you have about your pet? When I am tired, I curl up on my momma’s chest and go night-night. I am not crazy about my new harness and leash, so I do lots of flips and rolls to get it off of me; it doesn’t work.

Just how spoiled is your pet?I don’t really think I’m spoiled, but I do happen to have a huge back-yard and house, and everything seems so TALL, especially those big feet that accidentally step on me sometimes. I yelp in pain, but then I go chew my bone, and that makes it better! I’m over it!

Fifteen years ago I found myself mowing 70 of the most beautiful homes in the city of Casper each week. I am certain that I enjoyed these amazing landscapes even more than the people that lived in them. The smell of freshly cut grass, surrounded by breeze rustled leaves of every kind, with the sights of blooms and flowers changing with every season was enough to ignite my passion for every-thing green. This passion matured into a deep desire to under-stand why one plant thrived at one property but failed to thrive at another property on the other side of Casper. This was the beginning of my quest to understand the unique and often dif-ficult horticulture here in Casper, Wyoming.

One day back then, as I was mowing at a house on South Pop-lar Street, the owner of the home approached me to ask why a branch at the tip-top of his large, healthy Birch tree had died. I (being an avid rock climber) shimmied all the way to the top of that 30 foot tree to remove the branch. When I reached the top, I paused to take in the view. I was astonished to see many of the Birch trees that lined Poplar Street at that time had the exact same dead branches at their crown’s tips. I knew instantly that this was a very big problem, so I went straight to my old friend Tom Heald who was a veteran horticulturalist. Tom explained to me that this die-back was caused by an insect called the Bronze Birch Borer, and that it needed to be treated quickly to prevent it from killing the entire tree. I called a certified arborist to have the tree treated immediately then and every single year after as I watched most of the beautiful Birch trees in Casper die from this destructive insect.

Realizing that Casper’s unique and often difficult growing conditions would be so challenging sent me straight to the text books. I spent the following years pursuing an extensive education about every single plant in this city and I went on to become a Certified Arborist by the International Society of Arboriculture. I have spent the past decade caring for thousands of trees here in Casper and I have found that every tree has spe-cific needs but it begins with these three things.

1. Water deep and often, no matter the season.

2. Fertilize your trees. Casper soil isn’t fertile and doesn’t have enough of the nutrients your tree needs to thrive.

3. Use IPM (Integrated Pest Management). Have a certified arborist inspect your trees at least 3 times each season to make sure that some disease or insect isn’t killing them.

Where are you originally from? Andrew moved between Wyo-ming and Nebraska but calls Guernsey, WY home. Jessi was born and raised in Worland. Both Mady and Mae were born in Casper in 2007 and 2009.

How long have you lived in this neighborhood? We have been in Casper since 2007, but we opened our practice in the neighbor-hood in 2010.

What do you like to do to relax? We love going on family bike rides, playing in our yard, hiking and camping, playing golf, and playing board games.

How are you involved in the community? Wind City Dental supports multiple organizations through donations and spon-sorships including The Science Zone, Special Olympics, CASA, Central Wyoming Housing Authority, Central Wyoming Rescue Mission, and various local groups. Dr. Andrew is the Secretary for the local Dental Society. Dr. Jessi is a member of the Board of Health and spends one day each month providing dental care at area nursing homes. She also collaborates with the University of Wyoming Family Practice for dental education of medical residents.

Tell us about your kids! Both girls take swimming lessons at the Rec Center and participate in Sunshine Generation of Casper. Mady loves participating in the Casper Children's Theater and has been in three productions; Mae will start with the Theater in the fall when she turns 4. They also participate in many of The Science Zone programs.

What is your favorite part about the neighborhood? It was really important to us to have our office in a family friendly neighbor-hood, especially because we are a family dental practice. We love seeing families out walking and playing together and couldn't have picked a friendlier neighborhood.
