A Correctional Officer has to possess excellent communication skills. Within their daily activities officers encounter people of all races and diverse communication. Correctional Officers may in some occasions make public statements and appear in court. In order to communicate with them effectively and pass the accurate message to the public, they should have great verbal and non- verbal skills.

Public Announcement to the Press When preparing for a public statement to the press, the police officer should be familiar with certain verbal and non-verbal communication. Provide a clear and short-term dialog. Be prepared to communicate on different levels. Use the correct vocabulary. Have a respectable choice of words to avoid sending an incorrect message to the media. The media may misconstrue a message incorrectly when an incorrect choice of words is used. Avoid any facial expressions as it speaks louder than the verbal communication. [Add body language, and proper dress.] Uphold eye contact with the people because this will help the media comprehend the message. The officer may use gestures to clarify the message therefore, avoid exhaling or mumbling when a question is ask as this sends an incorrect message to the public.Testifying in Court

Correctional Officers are held at a higher standard not only officer is representing his self but the agency. Officer must maintain a high standard of professionalism verbally and non-verbally. Officers should dress for their court presence. [Add clean neat, professional appearance.] Prepare yourself for questions. Know the incident, read reports, know the evidence. Is important for an effective communication and credibility. Listen carefully; think before you talk everything you say is under review. Look and be observant because this will communicate that you serious about being precise and alert. Be genuine and honorable because trials are serious matters for everyone involved. Law enforcement and correctional agencies share a mutual goal which is public safety through decreasing crime. Correctional agencies emphasize the intend to rehabilitate, and enforce rules and regulations of the institution. Maintain an open communication. The Mathematical Model consist six elements 1. Comprehend the juveniles language in order to shape communication between each other. When this is accomplished, the officer may be able to comprehend the needs and actions of the juveniles.
