Teaching Strategies for GarageBand Interview Project

Active Learning

In an Active Learning environment students are given the opportunity to talk and listen, read and write, and reflect

as they work on a project of which requires students to apply what they are learning in a small group.

In this GarageBand Interview project the students will have the chance to use what they have learned in GarageBand to

portray a historical interview of a prominent Nebraskan. The students are discovering, applying and processing

information that they have researched in order to write a script for the interview.

Cooperative Learning

Cooperative Learning occurs when the students are in small teams with each student having a different level of

ability. Each member of a team is responsible for helping teammates learn and for understanding the material

themselves, they therefore sink or swim together. This creates an atmosphere of achievement. In this GarageBand

project the students are working with a partner gaining a greater satisfaction with their learning experience, develop social

skills, and improve their self-esteem. When the students work with a partner, most will have a greater retention and in

turn provide a better final project. Individual and group accountability will be assessed through individual tests at the end

of the project and a group grade for the actual project itself.

Demonstration

The Demonstration Method of teaching will be used during the GarageBand Interview project. The teacher will

demonstrate how to manipulate Garageband through the PowerPoint presentation created with the screen shots. When

the general over view of GarageBand is set, the teacher will actually demonstrate how to record voices, add background

music, and sound effects. This will be shown step by step using the exact physical procedures. While demonstrating the

teacher will explain the reason for and the significance of each step in order and including all steps. Using this

demonstration step allows the students the opportunity to see and hear the details related to the skill being taught. This

will accompany a print out of the GarageBand PowerPoint Slides to use as reference. By demonstrating the students can

see where to finds appropriate tools and buttons that they will utilize during the creation of their interview project. Allowing

the students to follow along in GarageBand while demonstrating will aid them in recalling the information when they need

to use it.

APL Teaching Strategies

One of the APL strategies that fit nicely in the GarageBand Podcast project is the daily Bell Ringer activity that

utilizes note cards. On each note card has a different short question or activity that is to be accomplished with a partner.

As the students come into the classroom they grab a note card and begin to complete the activity immediately. Then the

teacher randomly chooses a numbered note card. The chosen number group reads the question aloud and gives an

answer for all to hear. If time permits another card number may be chosen. They always have the same partner

throughout the project, therefore every day they grab a different card so before the end assessment everyone has

completed all of the note card short tasks. These cards are purposed as a review so all of the material has already been

taught. Then on the test day we take about 1 minute for each card and pass them around the room reviewing them all.

Questions are answered as they occur. The assessment question are derived directly from the note cards. Therefore

cards, are also in PowerPoint form. I print them off two slides to a page and staple them together at the top like a

flipbook. Each group can go through them if they finish the project before others, or have any extra time.

Integrating Technology

Today most teachers realize that computer literacy is crucial to a student’s education. By integrating technology

into curriculum can enhance and extend the learning experience for students and teachers alike. Since this project is

directly reliant on technology, it is actually a technology project that integrates Nebraska’s Social Studies Standards. The

students are required to learn prominent Nebraskans, so by turning it into an interview project they are required to use

research skills, copyright issues, Nebraskan history, how to use the GarageBand software, and working cooperatively.

This project covers several of the ISTE NETS and Performance Indicators for Students (NET-S). Creativity and

Innovation, Communication and Collaboration, Research and Information Fluency, Digital Citizenship, and the Technology

Operations and Concepts are all covered in this GarageBand Interview Project.
