Rail tracks may, at first sight, appear to be a relatively minor part ofan overall project, but a track fault can easily result in the crane

being immobilized with the consequent loss of productionthroughout the site. The repairs which follow track failure are often

costly and, of course, add to the initial disruption.

Failure of rails mounted on concrete normally results from

unsuitable design or inadequate materials and workmanship.

Rails are sometimes fixed rigidly to the concrete supporting

structure. Concrete has very little ductility and readily cracks

due to excessive local stress. This allows water to corrode

the reinforcement. Another common problem is the use of

inadequate grout below an otherwise effectively mounted rail.

Cement and concrete normally shrink on setting and leave a

weak surface which is not able to support the load effectively.

Traditional bolted crane rail clips were often designed to fix the rail

rigidly to the structure. However, steel structures flex and move

significantly during use. The top surface of a girder shortens notably

when the girder is subject to bending forces. Rigid rail fixing systems

give rise to high local fatigue stresses. These lead to the cracking

of the components. If left unchecked deterioration accelerates

rapidly thereby endangering the safe use of the craneage.

GANTRAIL flexibly mounted systems ensure the successful integration of cranes into structures.The result, no costly repairs and greatly reduced maintenance inspections.

Gantry Railing Limited have for more than 35 years recognised that rails should not be rigidly fixed to the structure but should be ‘soft mounted’. This allows the rail to adopt an optimum position in relation to the relatively rigid crane and structure. GANTRAIL fastenings are flexible for vertical rail movement. However, these rigidly fix the rail and prevent all lateral movement. GANTRAIL achieve this by the use of resilient pads on which the rail rests. These pads are made of specially formulated synthetic rubber and will withstand all normal environmental conditions experienced in any country. All GANTRAIL clips are infinitely adjustable within the range.

Fixing the rails is one problem, joining them is another. It is desirable to weld rails into continuous lengths in order to eliminate high point impact loadings which cause damage to the supporting structure. Using resilient rail pads below the rail, the transmitted loads are reduced and spread over a greater area while the fretting and corrosion of the rail support is eliminated. With continuous soleplates on concrete, the load effects are further reduced, although in certain situations individual soleplates spaced at intervals can be used. Having levelled the plates the gap between them and the concrete is filled with non-shrink cement based, or epoxy resin grout. This ensures that the finished track will give smooth, trouble free running to the user.

The GANTRAIL mounted system offers consultants and users satisfactory solutions to the long term problem of securing a live load to a fixed point without eventual failure by fatigue. Our comprehensive literature includes selection charts which enables the correct choice of GANTRAIL products to be made for most normally encountered situations.

Installation Service

GANTRAIL employ supervisors or skilled teams that include appropriately qualified erectors, welders and support staff, who install to a stringent, universally accepted specification. This covers the complete installation, including all recommended safety and quality checks that are necessary to ensure the optimum performance from the crane and structure.

Adequate stocks of GANTRAIL products are normally available. Repairs and track replacement can be timed to coincide with works closure periods.

Survey Service

Our own qualified technicians are available to carry out instrument surveys anywhere in the world to supply detailed reports on track alignment, level and condition of rails and fastening systems. At the same time we report on any breakdown of track foundations (if concrete) and on the presence of fretting wear of girder top plate (if structural steel). The accompanying recommendations are detailed and comprehensive.

We offer surveys to conform to National and International Standards.

Preventive Maintenance

Depending upon crane usage, regular six or twelve-monthly inspections are essential for trouble-free crane track installations. We offer attractive contract terms for undertaking this service, which will include a detailed examination, report and corrective recommendations where necessary.

Gantrail systems and equipment have been installed in most countries throughout the world including the following:

Continuous Support

� The continuous soleplates are aligned and levelled using

foundation bolts, with a minimum gap between the plate and

concrete. This gap is filled with special high strength non-

shrink epoxy resin or cementitious grout to provide a strong

and continuous support to the soleplate. 15mm is required

for epoxy grout and 25mm for cement based grout.

� The rail is fixed to the soleplate in the normal way

using the GANTRAIL clips and pads.

Discontinuous Support

� The rail is supported at regular intervals by individual

soleplates that are fixed with two or four holding down

bolts. They are typically grouted in place once the rail has

been positioned and the GANTRAIL rail clips and pad

have been fixed. This ensures they fully and effectively

support the rail. The soleplates are spaced to ensure rail

stresses and deflections are within acceptable limits.

Design Characteristics

� Either method incorporating GANTRAIL clips and pads, as

outlined above, ensures an even distribution and transmission of

the vertical and horizontal load into the concrete foundation.

� It eliminates the disintegration of the concrete around the holding

down bolts.

� It simplifies the mounting and adjustment of the rail.

� It permits easier replacement of rails in the future.

APPLICATIONS

Gantrail Mark II crane rail pads have been designed forinstallations where rails are mounted on individual sole plates.

When used in conjunction with Gantrail adjustable rail clips,Mark II crane rail pad will significantly reduce stresses in the rail,and the grout and concrete below the sole plate.

It allows the rail to rotate small amounts so that it conforms tothe crane wheel. This gives an even distribution of wheel loads ontothe supporting structure.

The Mark II pad incorporates a number of proven features:

l Front and back lips sit over the sole plate to prevent paddisplacement.

l Eliminates load concentrations and resultant fatigue stressesin the rail mounting.

l Protects the crane mechanism and increases rail, wheel,bearing and axle life.

l Reduces the wear of rail and support surface by eliminatingfretting corrosion.

EINSATZBEREICHE

Gantrail II Kranschienenpolster sind für Installationen, bei denendie Schienen auf einzelnen Fußplatten montiert sind, entwickelt.

Gantrail Mark II pads are supplied as individual pieces that fitbetween the sole plate and the rail. They are cut from longerlengths to suit the particular rail foot width. They are cut so thatthey are nominally 5mm less than the width of the foot of the rail.

SPECIFICATION

Gantrail Mark II pads are manufactured from wear resistantdurable thermoplastic elastomer. They are unaffected by oil, greaseor ultraviolet light. They have been tested to many times the designloads and show complete recovery.

Tapered trailing and leading edges reduces edge loading onthe sole plate and grout when the crane wheel is between soleplates.

Temperature range: -25° to + 75°C

Recommended maximum compressive stress: 10N/mm2(Compressive stress is installation related and should be reduced above 50°C)

ESPECIFICACION

Se elabora el Cojín Mark VII de un elastómero sintético resistente aldesgaste y con buenas características de recuperación; no es afectadopor el aceite, grasa, ozono ni los rayos ultravioleta.

El cojín incorpora una tira de acero ligado y recubierto para queresista la corrosión.

INSTALACION

El cojín debe ser más estrecho que el carril que soporta (menos por unvalor nominal de 5 mm).

Se suministra el cojín en longitudes de aproximadamente 12 metros.Se instala con la superficie acanalada hacia arriba en contacto con lasuperficie inferior del carril. Se puede cortar para que tenga la longitudprecisa del carril. Se le puede cortar con una sierra para metales o devaivén. La longitud del cojín que se instala no debe ser menos que ladistancia entres cuatro pares adyacentes de placas de sujeción del carrilde grúa.

Antes de instalar el Cojín Mark VII se debe limpiar la zona de soportepara que no tenga aceite, grasa ni proyecciones que puedan dañar elcojín. En las instalaciones nuevas, es preferible que la parteinmediatamente debajo del cojín no tenga pintura. Si es necesario,puede estar aprestada, pero los aprestos con base de aceite no sonaceptables.

Si se ha de soldar el carril (Gantrail firmemente lo recomienda), sedebe proteger el cojín contra el calor excesivo que se crea debajo de lasoldadura, sea quitándolo sea introduciendo una barrera térmica. Jamáscortar el cojín en piezas cortas porque podrán salir durante el uso delcarril.Le placerá a nuestro Departamento Técnico de Ventas asesorarle sobrela idoneidad del Cojín Mark VII en condiciones específicas.

INSTALLATION

Die Schienenklemmplatte sollte schmaler als die Schiene sein, die siestützt (nominal 5mm).

Die Klemmplatte wird in Längen von ca. 12m geliefert und solltefortlaufend in den Schienenstützbereich verlegt werden. Die Rillen derKlemmplatte liegen oben uns sind mit der unteren Fläche der Schiene inKontakt. Sie kann auf die genaue Länge der Schiene zugeschnittenwerden. Sie kann mit einer Bügelsäge oder Schweifsäge zugeschnittenwerden. Keine installierte Länge an Klemmplatte sollte weniger als derAbstand zwischen vier nebeneinanderliegendenKranschienenbefestigungsklemmen betragen.

Vor der Installation der Klemmplatte Mark VII sollte der Stützbereichsauber und frei von Öl, Fett oder jeglichen hervorstehenden Teilen sein,durch die die Klemmplatte möglicherweise beschädigt werden könnte.Bei neuen Installationen sollte der Bereich unter der Klemmplattevorzugsweise nicht gestrichen sein. Falls erforderlich kann ervorangestrichen werden, wobei jedoch Voranstriche auf Ölbasis nichtakzeptabel sind.

Soll die Schiene geschweißt werden (die wird von Gantrail sehrempfohlen), dann sollte die Klemmplatte vor übermäßiger Hitze geschütztwerden, indem sie von unter der Schweißstelle entfernt wird oder durcheine thermale Abdeckung geschützt wird. SPECIFICATION

Mark VII Pad is manufactured from wear resistant synthetic elastomerwhich has good recovery properties and is unaffected by oil, grease,ozone and exposure to ultra-violet rays.

The pad incorporates a bonded steel; reinforcement strip which isencapsulated for protection against corrosion.

INSTALLATION

Rail pad should be narrower than the rail it is supporting (nominally 5mm).The pad is supplied in approximately 12 metre lengths to be laid

continously on the track support area. The flutes of the pad are placeduppermost, in contact with the rail bottom surface. It may be cut toprecise length of rail. It can be cut with a hacksaw or jigsaw. No installedlength of pad should be less than the spacing between four adjacentpairs of crane rail fixing clips.

Before installing Mark VII Pad the supporting area should be cleanand free of oil, grease or any projections likely to damage the pad. Onnew installations, the area directly beneath the pad should preferably bepaint-free. If necessary, it may be primed but oil based primers are notacceptable.

If the rail is to be welded (Gantrail strongly recommend this) the padshould be protected from excessive heat by being removed under theweld or by being protected with a thermal barrier. Under no circum-stances should the pad be cut into short lengths below welds. This willresult in the pad working out from under the rail when in service.Our Technical Sales Department will be pleased to advise on thesuitability of Mark VII Pad in specific installation conditions.

En ce qui concerne les installations neuves,il est préférable que la surface juste sous l’intercalaire soit exempte depeinture. Si nécessaire, elle peut être recouverte d’une couche de fond,mais les couches de fond à base d’huile ne sont pas acceptables.

Si le rail doit être soudé (Gantrail le recommande fortement),l’intercalaire doit être protégé contre la chaleur excessive en étant enlevéde dessous la soudure ou en le protégeant au moyen d’une barrièrethermique. L’intercalaire ne doit en aucun cas être coupé en longueurscourtes sous les soudures. The fit between the rail and its support isseldom perfect. The action of the crane

causes the rail to rotate about a longitudinalaxis. The inaccuracies of the girder and the railmean that the rail seldom makes good contact

with the crane wheel and girder. Gantrail padhas been specially designed to take account

of these problems and to smoothly transferthe forces from the rail to the structure. Lengthfor length pad costs less than the rail but it can

significantly increase the life of the rail, cranewheels and crane bearings.

tion. The phenomenon is sometimes knownas the bow wave effect. The Gantrail padcontrols the way this interaction with the

structure takes place. The pad stiffness hasbeen designed to ensure that the pressure

Stahl nicht vorhanden wäre. Der Stahl in derKlemmplatte fungiert jedoch als tiefer, schmaler

stiffness characteristic. On individual loading, thevoids in the top is advantageous as it allows the

Gantrail clips to pre-compress the pad. Onincreasing the wheel loading, the voids are filled

Bolt Bearing Section

INSTALLATIONThe design of the installation may be made to suit the

details of the structure. The Gantrail girder surge connector isa structural element and its application should be checked bya qualified structural engineer.

The bearings are packed with grease. They are normallysupplied with the oil resistant rubber 'O' rings. They can besupplied fully assembled and with all the required endconnections.

When the connectors are installed it is preferable topre-assemble the bearings with the 'O' rings and end plates.The main bolts through the bearings should have their headsat the top of the assembly. There should be no threads in theshear plane of the bearing. The bolts should be tight-ened to 85% of the design proof load for the bolt or a similarhigh tension value consistent with local engineering practice.It is recommended that for sizes with bolt diameter over30 mm, a trial assembly is made before all the links areinstalled.

Se recomienda que para pernos de diámetro superiora 30 mm, se efectúe un ensamblaje de prueba antes de queinstalen todas las uniones.

Die Lager sind mit Fett abgedichtet. Sie werdennormalerweise mit ölbeständigen “O” Ringen aus Gummigeliefert. Sie können vollkommen montiert und mit allenbenötigten Endverbindungsklemmen geliefert werden.

Wenn die Verbindungsklemmen installiert werden, wirdes bevorzugt, daß die Lager mit den “O” Ringen und dieEndplatten vormontiert werden. Die Köpfe der Hauptbolzensollten sich bei der Montage an der Oberseite der Lagerbefinden. An der Unterseite der Auflage sollte sich keinGewinde befinden. Die Bolzen sollten bis auf 85% der Lastim Entwurf des Bolzens oder einem ähnlich hohenZugkraftwertes, der mit den örtlichen technischen Verfahrenübereinstimmt, angezogen werden. Es wird empfohlen, daßbei Größen mit einem Bolzendurchmesser über 30mm, eineVersuchsmontage durchgeführt wird, bevor alleVerbindungsklemmen montiert werden.

INSTALLATIONLa conception de l’installation peut être faite pour

Les paliers sont remplis de graisse. Ils sontnormalement livrés avec des anneaux “O” en caoutchoucrésistants à l’huile. Ils peuvent être livrés complètementmontés avec tous les liens de connexion nécessaires.

Quand les pièces-raccords sont installées, il estpréférable de monter les paliers à l’avance avec les anneaux“O” et les platines d extremites. Les boulons les paliersdevraient avoir leurs têtes en haut de l’assemblage. On nedevrait pas trouver de filets de la vis dans le plan decisaillement du palier. Les boulons devraient être serrésjusqu’à 85% de la charge de calcul pour le boulon ou à unevaleur similaire compatible avec l’usage. Un assemblaged’essai avant l’installation de tous les liens est recommandépour les boulons d’un diamètre supérieur à 30mm.

Crane girders need to be firmly fixed to the columns on which they rest. They also need to transfer horizontal forces from the cranes into the building. When the girder is loaded, its end is compressed and it rotates. In small buildings the modest forces can be absorbed through the fixings at the girder bottom flange. In steel works, aluminium plants and other heavy structures, there are often problems in carrying these forces while also permitting the deflections. Typically the crane girder sits on one column and the building roof is carried on another column. The top of the girder is connected to the building roof column. The traditional detail is normally some form of diaphragm plate or plate with slotted holes. These details are not reliable and they do not work for the life of the plant.

Gantrail crane girder surge connectors eliminate the difficulties in transferring horizontal forces and deflections from the crane girder into the building. The heart of the Gantrail product is a mechanical link. This has a ball and socket joint at each end. These can take significantly more movement than the traditional structural connections.

The structural engineer must consider the full design of this detail in the knowledge of the loading and use anticipated. It is possible to design with the full force that will occur at a pair of columns being carried on either one connector or two. This is dependant on the method of carrying load from one girder to another. Gantrail can supply ‘tongue and groove’ devices for carrying horizontal forces between adjacent girders.

Gantrail Krantragbalken-Ausgleichsverbindungsklemmen schließen die Schwierigkeiten bei der Übertragung von waagerechter Last und Durchbiegungen von dem Krantragbalken ins Gebäude aus. Der Kern des Gantrail Produktes ist eine mechanische Verbindungsklemme mit einem Kugelgelenk an beiden Enden. Sie erlaubt wesentlich mehr Bewegung als traditionelle Bauverbindungsklemmen.

Der Hochbauingenieur muß die ganze Konstruktiondieses Bauteiles mit der erwarteten Belastung und dem erwarteten Einsatz in Betracht ziehen. Es ist möglich den Entwurf so zu gestalten, daß eine vollen Tragkraft die auf einem paar Stützen lastet auf eine oder mehrere Verbindungsklemmen übertragen wird. Es hängt von der Methode der Lasttragung von einem Tragbalken zum anderen ab. Gantrail kann “Querverbindungen” zur Tragung waagerechter Last zwischen angrenzenden Tragbalken liefern.

Les pièces-raccords des poutres de compensation de Gantrail éliminent les difficultés en transférant les forces horizontales et les déflexions de la poutre de la grue dans le bâtiment. Le coeur du produit de Gantrail est un lien mécanique avec un joint à bille et un joint à manchon à chaque extremite qui peuvent absorber beaucoup plus de mouvement que les liens de construction traditionnels.

The 3-in-1 Crucible 2000 can be described as the logical development of aluminothermy rail welding.

Serving a dual purpose as a safe container and reaction room for the incorporated portion-load, the Crucible 2000 is equipped with a fail-safe automatic thimble which is placed on top of the mould pair after preheating.

Thanks to the prefabricated and sealed container, the fi nal reaction takes place without any serious damage resulting from the surrounding atmosphere. Thus the resulting steel is pure, homogeneous and more elastic.

Using the 3-in-1 Crucible 2000 will ease the welder’s work considerably by abandoning:

• cleaning, preheating operational surveillance and inspection of the old-style crucibles,

As a result of our thorough research and development, we have created a new unique mould design referred to as Mould type SP (short preheating) resp. Our Mould type LP (long preheating) ensures that aluminothermic rail welding becomes even more simple, safe and easy than it was before.

Both, the outer shape and design of our welding collars, are identical for either type of mould SP and LP. Thus only one single execution of mould-shoes is necessary for all types of rails.

Moulds of type SP (formerly referred to as SKV) weigh 20% less than the old parts, and their reduced width allows shearing with even the smallest shearing device without having to remove the top-section of the moulds with a hammer or a saw.

Above all, the sophisticated design of the welding collar as well as the extreme position of the 'foot-risers' at the rail-foot perimeter improves the heat-up effect during preheating considerably. Looking at the moulds of type LP (long preheating) the important duration of preheating can be shorten by at least 3 to 5 minutes depending on the rail profi le.

The newly designed welding collars avoids possible heat-fi ssures (warm-cracks) in the area between rail foot and web, and furthermore prevents breakage in the rail foot centre caused by self-tension.

Additionally, the new moulds are designed with incorporated grooves to be combined with our new sealing strips, thus reducing sand-sealing.

GANTRAIL ®

The fi nger-thick, prefabricated sealing strip made from a special clay-mixture guarantees an easy, secure and tight closing of moulds around rail.

One weld requires a maximum of 0.9kg (=10 prefabricated strips) of the sealing material, which is incorporated into the mould-cardbox.

For easy handling by a 2-person welding team, the strips are surrounded by one vacuum-closed, airtight bag with 2 small packs each holding 5 strips.

Thus, the sealing-strips are available on site without further logistical arrangement in all kinds of weather.

Due to the softness of the prefabricated cords, the sealing material fi ts easily into the tightening-grooves of the moulds. During preheating the material becomes a hard, reliable and tight gasket.

Eliminates improper weldings resulting from:

• gas-bubbles caused by wet sand,

• sand-enclosures,

• bubbles of incorporated sand,

• pores at the welding-bulge and

• leakage caused by dry sand.

Using the sealing strips eliminates the need for sack-loads of sand, collecting dishes or other ballast protections and/or layers.

GANTRAIL ®

Weldings operations with the new mould type for wide welding gaps are very simple, cost reducing and safe. The quality of the weld is similar to the results of a standard 25mm gap. Our sophisticated and optimised mould design leads to reduced and self-tension and prevents heat-cracks as well as cavities caused by heat-centres.

Width of gaps may vary from 50 to 70mm

Compared to other designs, our light and tiny mould can be sheared by means of small devices without having to remove the critical mould-top-section manually.

Having optimised the welding collar and simultaneously eliminating heavy and thick risers, we can now recommend the welding of wide gaps with only ONE portion. There is neither need of additional portions nor for special tools as known in the past.

Preheating can be done by means of both burner types for LP (long preheating) or for SP (short preheating) from 3 to 2 minutes.

The mould types for wide gaps are designed with incorporated grooves to go together with our sealing-strip whereby one weld requires approx. 0.9kg.

INTRODUCTION

During recent years production cranes and automated warehousing systems have increased in size and speed.The hydraulic heavy-duty shock absorber was developed to transform the impact into heat and to slow down the system in a controlled manner by minimizing the end forces. Compared to standard devices such as springs and rubber buffers the shock absorber is the most cost effective and reliable method for reducing the energy transmitted during an impact.A large range of more than 100 standard heavy-duty absorbers with different capacities and stroke lengths have been developed to meet the increasing demands of our customers. Due to our CNC - based production we have also established a good reputation for providing a quick and fl exible response to modifi cations and specials.

FEATURES

The LDS – range was developed for automated warehousing systems and stacker crane applications. Four different series are available with piston diameters of 32,40.50 and 75mm and strokes of 50 to 1.200mm. The energy capacity reaches from 2.000 up to 144.000 Nm. The deceleration characteristic is manufactured according to the requirements of the customer. The housing is zinc plated or painted, the piston rod is hard chrome-plated

The HLS - range was developed for heavy production cranes and swivel bridges. 2 series are available with piston diameters of 63 and 100mm and strokes of 100 to 600mm. The energy capacity reaches from 15.000 up to 230.000 Nm. The deceleration characteristic is manufactured according to the requirements of the customer. The housing is zinc plated or painted, the piston rod is hard chrome-plated.

The LDS and HLS models can be used with impact speeds of 0,2 – 5m/s. The temperature range reaches from –20° to +70C Accessories include front and rear fl ange, foot mounting and a proximity switch.

Principle LDSLDS models have two

chambers fi lled with hydraulic oil and nitrogen.These

chambers are seperated by a rubber bellow. This

construction allows the reset of the piston with a low force.Under impact the piston rod

is pushed into the cylinder displacing the oil through the

orifi ces out of the pressure tube towards the rubber

bellow. The rubber bellow compresses the nitrogen; as a result the pressure raises.When the mass is released the pressure of the nitrogen

sets back the piston rod.

Principle HLSHLS models have two

is used as an accumulator.Under impact the piston rod

GANTRAIL ® PBG

Gantrail PBG is a free fl ow polyester grout, specifi cally designed and developed for anchoring

bolts and dowels into vertically downward holes into rock, concrete, brickwork and masonry.

Typical applications are the permanent fi xing of starter bars and dowels, foundation bolts, ground

anchors, base plates for building systems and rail and crane tracks.

DESCRIPTION

Gantrail PBG is a two pack system consisting of a liquid polyester resin and a fi ller component containing graded silica sands and an activator. Available in Standard Grade or Tropical Grade versions.

DIRECTIONS FOR USE

1. Drilling the hole

Using the correct diameter drill bit (see table), drill the hole to the required depth. A rotary percussive machine should be used. If for any reason diamond drilling is required, the smooth hole produced must be thoroughly roughened

2. Cleaning the hole

Drilling debris and dust must be thoroughly cleaned from the hole using a stiff nylon bottle brush and clean compressed air and/or clean water. If water is used the hole may be left damp or even full of water, but the water and the sides of the hole must be clean.

3. Mixing

Pour the resin component into a suitable clean mixing vessel, and whilst stirring slowly add the fi ller component. Once the fi ller component is completely added, mix for a further one minute. A mechanical mixer such as a slow speed drill and mixer paddle is recommended.

4. Application

Pour the mixed Gantrail PBG into the drilled hole taking care not to entrap air or water. If the hole is of a particularly small diameter or if the displacement of water is diffi cult by pouring, the Gantrail PBG can be injected by using applicator cartridges and injection tubing. The tube should be placed at the bottom of the hole and the resin injected through it, the tube being slowly withdrawn as the hole fi lls with resin.The hole should be fi lled to approximately half of its depth, depending upon application, and the fi xing should be immediately pushed slowly down into the resin, with a twisting action, displacing the resin up towards the top of the hole to completely fi ll the annular space.

The bolt must then be left undisturbed until the resin has set. The fi xture can be attached once the service time of the resin has elapsed.

5. Cleaning

Tools should be cleaned immediately after use, before the resin sets, using proprietary cleaner. Once the resin has set it can only be removed by mechanical means.
