Drive the “Food Drive”The application of Gamification to collect surplus food
(Gamification Certification Lv.2)
Saki Uchida, Tokyo
Sep. 2014.
Who are we trying to help?
Food Drive –background info-
• It’s a charity event dedicated to collecting food for the poor (Wiktionary)
• It’s one of the Food Bank’s activities. (Food Banks collect surplus food that is still safe for consumption and redistribute them to those in need. eg. Second Harvest)
• It’s popular in US, but quite new and not so popular in Japan yet. Some local authorities are trying to do it in their cities.
What to approach with Gamification?
Target tasks
1. Increase the amount of food collected from people who live or work in the city
2. Improve the variety of food collected from people who live or work in the city
3. Increase the number of repeaters and make the action their habit.
Target people
• People who live and work in the cities the Food Drives run. (People who are expected to bring their surplus food to the Food Banks)
• Main Player Types would be : Socializers and Achievers

Idea 3: Level up to support larger area.
• At the beginning, people are allowed to support only their local area, however, when player’s contribution level (XP points) is high enough, player would be allowed to support other areas too.• Show player’s supporting area as a map

Idea 4: Set Triggers (Text messaging)
• Text message would be sent to the member to remind:• new missions
• Progress
• Need for help etc.
Idea 5: Karma
• Let supported people to send “Thank you” messages to the people who donated their food.
Idea 6: Long term mission
• Food Drive would decrease the amount of food loss (waste) within the city.• Which means, the city would be more clean and environmentally frieandly.
• Visualise it… Every time the city succeeded to complete the food drive mission, the picture of the city on the website gets nicer and nicer.
