Teacher’s Notes:*I use the materials in this file with my math fact units. I teach the students how to play the game with our first fact unit (during a math lesson). Then, I send home the materials in a gallon baggie for home practice. I have a set of commercially made flash cards that I keep in our math center so the students can also play the game at school with new fact units.

*There are no flash cards in this file. However, there are a variety of free resources available on the web! If you use pinterest, just type in “addition facts” or “subtraction facts” and pages of resources will pop up - many of them are free printables! Some math programs include consumable flash cards as well.

*My students get a new sheet of math facts every couple weeks. Each sheet focuses on a particular strategy (i.e. doubles facts, subtracting 1 etc.). The materials in this file can be used with any fact unit.

*I’ve included a “Notes for Parents” page that can be printed and sent home to help explain the importance of math fact mastery. This letter is what I want the parents to know (it may or may not match your program - use it only if it works for your program).

*My students get the gallon baggie with the Math Fact Cards cover sheet inside (I copy it on card stock). They keep this at home and add new flash cards to it every couple weeks when I introduce a new unit and send home a sheet of flash cards (they cut them apart at home).

*I’ve included a printable number line (for facts under 30) that can also be sent home. Some students in my class are still at the stage where they need support to solve the facts. They can also use the number line to check answers.

*I print and copy the sheet with 2 recording sheets, cut it in half and staple a pack of them together. I include this in the baggie. I tell the students to just let me know when they run out and then I provide another pack (this way I don’t waste paper making a lot of copies for those families who are not actually using them).

*If you want to use the game in a math center, print and copy the recording sheet that works best for your students. I use the half sheet to conserve paper. However, you may want the full page for students with special needs.

3. First sheet of fact cards (mine are on a sheet of colored paper or card stock). I have the students cut the first set apart at school during a math lesson. Future sheets are sent home and cut apart there.

4. Packet of Fact Card Game Recording sheets (I use the half sheets and staple 20 in each pack).

5.Number Line sheet (for students who need support OR for checking answers).

Math FactsNotes for Parents:

Throughout the year your child will be learning addition and subtraction facts.

Encourage your child to practice the facts using flash cards.

Since the students are at various stages of understanding when it comes to the facts, your child may or may not need a strategy to help him/her solve the facts. Some children are at the concrete stage and require objects to help them solve the problems. Some are at the representational stage and can use the number line, the number grid or counting on/back to solve problems. Finally, some will be at the abstract stage and able to solve the problems through mental math or memorization.

The goal is to know the facts on sight! However, if your child is struggling with the facts, please encourage him/her to use a strategy to solve the problems.

THANK YOU for helping your child find success with the math facts!

Fact Card Game Instructions

1. Place all the flashcards in a pile (shuffle them first). Each player needs a recording sheet.

2.Player1 draws a card and solves the fact. Write the fact and the answer on the recording sheet.

3.Player 2 draws a card and solves the fact. Write the fact and the answer on the recording sheet.

4.Compare the answers. If your answer is MORE than your partner’s you score 10 points. If your answer is LESS than your partner’s, you score 0 points.

5. When both partners have filled the recording sheet, count by 10’s to add up all the points. Write the total in the box at the bottom. High score wins! (to change things up, decide at the beginning if you want HIGH score or LOW score to win at the end).

If there is a question about an answer, use objects or the number line to check the answer.

TIP: for little ones who may find it hard to get the cards in a neat pile, place the cards face down on a plastic or paper plate. Don’t worry about making a stack, just lay them out so they are face down.
