NATIoNAL PoLLS

STArTING SHorTHANDED¢ The Vols enter the season with four members of

its 15-man roster sidelined by injuries. most nota-bly, senior forward Jeronne Maymon, a second-team All-SEC performer and UT’s second-leading scorer last season, is out with a knee injury. ¢ fellow senior forward Dwight Miller also is still

rehabbing following offseason knee surgery.¢ freshman guard Derek Reese had surgery in

August to address a labral tear.¢ Lastly, senior walk-on forward Rob Murphy is

out for a short period after breaking his nose dur-ing practice wednesday (had surgery Thursday).

wELComE BACK, CAmPBELL¢ with three scholarship players currently in the

midst of long-term rehabs, Tennessee on friday added a familiar face as a practice player: Knoxville native Galen Campbell¢ Campbell, a Knoxville native and 2011 graduate

of fulton High School, was a freshman walk-on for the Vols last season. ¢ An institutionally-mandated limitation on ros-

ter sizes that went into effect for the 2012-13 aca-

demic year trimmed the men’s basketball team’s roster to 15 players (13 scholarship, two walk-ons), so Campbell had planned on taking a year off from the team before rejoining the squad as a walk-on next season. ¢ An exception was made, however, due to the

team’s injury situation, so Campbell is back as a practice player only (will not travel or play in games). His first day in action was last friday.

DoN’T SAy ANTHING, BUT...¢ on Sunday, oct. 28, Tennessee faced Georgia

Tech in a “silent scrimmage” at UTC’s mcKenzie Arena in Chattanooga, Tenn.¢ NCAA guidelines prohibit the release of score

and/or statistical information from such scrim-mages, and only “essential team personnel” were allowed to be present.¢ Vols head coach Cuonzo Martin said he was

happy with how his team played and the effort it put forth, but he also identified some areas that the team needs to work on (more post feeds, of-fensive spacing).

STAff UPDATES¢ Cuonzo martin announced on July 3 that he

had promoted Tracy Webster to associate head coach. webster, who, like martin, is entering his second season with the Volunteers, previously held the title of assistant coach since his hiring on April 5, 2011.

¢ webster works closely with Tennessee’s guards, and his player development efforts last season helped the Vols finish second in the SEC after initially being projected to finish 11th in the then-12-team league.

¢ martin, along with UT’s head strength and con-ditioning coach, ron mcKeefery, announced on may 31 that Nicodemus Christopher had been hired to oversee all strength and conditioning efforts related to the men’s basketball program.

¢ A native of San Diego, Calif., Christopher has previous experience as an assistant sports per-formance coach at Accelerate Performance En-hancement Center (APEC) in Tyler, Texas, and he worked as a sports performance coach at the michael Johnson Performance Center in Dallas.

¢ He has assisted with NfL training camp prepa-ration and off-season workouts for NfL stand-outs such as marion Barber, Bradie James, Akin Ayodele, Donald Driver and weslye Saunders, just to name a few.

¢ Christopher received a bachelor’s degree in health and human performance from Baylor (2007) and a master’s degree in kinesiology with an emphasis on biomechanics and anatomi-cal kinesiology from the University of Texas at Tyler (2010).

Two VoLS LAND oN “ToP 100” LIST¢ Tennessee’s frontcourt tandem of Jeronne May-

mon and Jarnell Stokes was honored by CBSS-ports.com in the preseason, as each player land-ed on the website’s list of “College Basketball’s Top 100 Players.”

¢ Stokes and maymon were listed at Nos. 25 and 69, respectively.

¢ Tennessee was one of 22 schools (and one of four in the SEC) to place multiple players in the list’s top 70.

¢ Stokes and maymon headline what CBSsports.com college basketball expert Gary Parrish touts as “one of the nation’s best front courts.”

¢ The pair weighs in at 530 pounds and combined for 22.3 points and 15.5 rebounds per game a season ago.

SToKES, mAymoN GArNEr PrESEASoN ALL-SEC HoNorS¢ Jarnell Stokes was named to the media’s five-

man preseason All-SEC first team.¢ Jeronne Maymon was one six players picked for

the media’s All-SEC second team.

LEAGUE mEDIA PICKS VoLS foUrTH¢ A preseason poll of SEC and national media

members projected Tennessee to finish fourth in the 14-team SEC this season.

¢ The Vols were picked to finish 11th in last year’s preseason media poll (the league had 12 teams), but went 10-6 to finish second in the final stand-ings in Cuonzo martin’s first season at UT.

roSTEr BrEAKDowN¢ The Vols’ 2012-13 roster features 15 players (13

scholarship student-athletes) representing three nations and seven states.

¢ four Vols hail from the state of Tennessee, while four are from Georgia.

¢ Tennessee has five seniors, three juniors, four sophomores and three freshmen.

¢ The roster includes nine guards, five forwards and one center.

• Six Vols stand 6-5 or shorter, and nine are 6-6 or taller.

frEQUENT-fLyEr mILES- After traveling to maui, Hawaii, for the EA Sports

maui Invitational last November, and spending 10 days touring Europe during a four-game exhibi-tion tour in August, the Vols depart Nov. 13 for another exotic destination, as they are part of the eight-team field at the 2012 Puerto rico Tip-off in Bayamon, Puerto rico.

- UT opens play in Puerto rico against UNC Ashe-ville Nov. 15 before facing either Akron or okla-homa State one day later.

- The four teams on the opposite side of the bracket are Umass, NC State, Penn State and Providence.

BIG orANGE ANNIVErSArIES¢ The 2012-13 season marks the 50th anniversary

of legendary head coach Ray Mears’ first season at UT. mears was the head coach at Tennessee for 15 years from 1962-63 to 1976-77 and boasted a .713 winning percentage (278-112). He passed away on June 11, 2007.

¢ The 2012-13 campaign also is the 70th anni-versary of Tennessee’s 1943 SEC Championship team, which finished 14-4 (6-3 SEC) under head coach John Mauer.

¢ Twenty years ago, Allan Houston captured the 1993 SEC scoring title (22.3 ppg) – and he also broke Ernie Grunfeld’s school scoring record.

¢ And Ron Slay was the league’s scoring cham-pion 10 years ago, averaging 21.2 ppg in 2003.

ANoTHEr AmBITIoUS SCHEDULE¢ In keeping with recent tradition, Tennessee’s

schedule will once again rank among the most difficult in the nation...

¢ At least 17 games against teams that won 20 or more games last season

¢ At least 13 games against teams that played in the NCAA Tournament last season (and at least seven games against teams who advanced to the Sweet Sixteen)

¢ At least 12 games against teams with a top-50 rPI last season

LAST yEAr’S SEC SCorING DEfENSE BEST SINCE 1969¢ Tennessee’s scoring defense of 61.6 ppg in SEC

play last year was the program’s best in the shot-clock era (1986-present).

¢ Not since 1968-69 had a UT team stifled league opponents like last year’s Vols.

¢ The 1968-69 squad held SEC opponents to just 60.9 ppg; at that time, the SEC was composed of only 10 teams and the league schedule featured 18 games.

VoLS SEEKING EIGHTH STrAIGHT SEASoN of ToP-fIVE ATTENDANCE¢ The Vols finished fifth nationally in average reg-

ular-season home attendance last year, drawing 17,411 fans per game.

¢ As of Nov. 3, Tennessee had already sold more season tickets for the 2012-13 campaign (13,000+) than there are total seats at five dif-ferent SEC arenas.

BIG orANGE roSTEr PEACH fLAVorED oNCE AGAIN¢ for the second straight year, Tennessee’s roster

includes four players from the state of Georgia. ¢ UT’s three returnees from the Peach State are

responsible for more than 47 percent of the total Division I points scored (2,541) by this year’s ros-ter. Trae Golden (555), Kenny Hall (331), Jordan McRae (311) combine for 1,197 points entering this season.

¢ Backup point guard Armani Moore is a true freshman from Kennesaw, Ga.

SToKES ENJoyS GoLDEN SUmmEr¢ Sophomore power forward Jarnell Stokes

starred this summer for the USA Basketball men’s U18 National Team, which won the gold medal at the 2012 fIBA Americas U18 Championship June 16-20 in Sao Sebastiáo do Paraiso, Brazil.

¢ The memphis, Tenn., native started all five of Team USA’s games at the championship, averag-ing 14.0 points and 5.6 rebounds in 20.2 minutes per game.

¢ The team’s second-leading rebounder and scor-er, Stokes was remarkably efficient offensively, shooting .689 from the field.

¢ Stokes was the only player on the U.S. squad who boasted any collegiate experience.

¢ “you leave the SEC and come back to play-ing with your age group — it’s crazy how much easier it gets and how much smaller the other guys are,” Stokes said. “I can bury guys better. Sometimes I buried them early, before I’d catch the ball, and I already had them sealed.”

¢ florida head coach Billy Donovan was Stokes’ head coach at the fIBA Championship and was impressed by Stokes’ ability to physically domi-nate.

¢ “There was no one guy down there who could match up to him physically,” Donovan said. “He just overwhelmed other teams’ frontcourts.”

80 = TIPPING PoINT¢ In his previous four seasons as a head coach,

Cuonzo Martin’s teams are 15-2 when they score at least 80 points. That’s not surprising given the emphasis martin places on unrelenting defensive pressure, tenacity and technique.

SEC GrowS, ToUrNAmENT EXPANDS¢ The SEC adds missouri and Texas A&m this sea-

son, bringing the total of league teams to 14.¢ Each program is playing an 18-game SEC sched-

ule (no divisions).¢ The 2013 SEC Tournament will be held in Nash-

ville, Tenn., at Bridgestone Arena, march 13-17.¢ The tournament, which had been a four-day

event featuring 12 teams, has expanded to 14 teams, adding an extra day of competition. The tournament now begins on wednesday with two games featuring the four lowest-seeded teams.

VoLS IN THE NBA¢ The milwaukee Bucks opened their 2012-13 NBA

season Nov. 2 with a 99-88 road win over the Boston Celtics at TD Garden in Boston, and for-mer Vol Tobias Harris (2011) was in the Bucks’ starting lineup.

¢ Harris scored 18 points on 8-of-11 shooting - in-cluding 2-of-2 from 3-point range - while lead-ing milwaukee to its first season-opening victory since 2001.

¢ Veteran NBA point guard C.J. Watson (2003-06) entered his sixth NBA season with a new team: the Brooklyn Nets. Through his first five seasons, watson averaged 7.8 points and 2.6 as-sists per game.

¢ Vol legends Ernie Grunfeld (1974-77) and Allan Houston (1990-93) each hold NBA front-office titles. Grunfeld is in his 10th year as president of the washington wizards, and Houston is the as-sistant general manager of the New york Knicks.

TATUm STArTS Pro JoUrNEy¢ former Tennessee basketball player Cameron

Tatum (2008-12) was selected in the third round of the NBA Development League Draft Nov. 2.

¢ Tatum, who completed his collegiate eligibil-ity this past spring and played for the memphis Grizzlies’ NBA Summer League team, was the 38th overall selection in friday’s draft.

¢ The Iowa Energy drafted Tatum and traded his rights to the Bakersfield (Calif.) Jam shortly thereafter.

¢ “Coach martin’s style of play is actually what impressed the (Bakersfield) coaches. I talked to them (on draft night), and they said they liked the way I defend point guards and the screen-and-roll,” Tatum said.

wHo’S GoT NEXT?¢ Tennessee departs Tuesday morning for Bay-

amón, Puerto rico, where they’ll play in the 2012 Puerto rico Tip-off Nov. 15-18.

¢ The Vols face UNC Asheville Thursday at 12:30 p.m. ET (ESPNU). The winner of that game faces the winner of Akron-oklahoma State on friday.

¢ The four teams on the opposite side of the bracket are Umass, NC State Penn State and Providence.

¢ In the one-year period spanning fron Nov. 19, 2011, to Nov. 19, 2012, the Vols will have spent 10 days in Italy and close to a week in both maui, Hawaii and Puerto rico.

Cuonzo martin took the Tennessee basketball team on a 10-day, four-game exhibition tour of Italy Aug. 5-15. The tour began in rome and progressed north through florence, Pisa and The republic of San marino before concluding in Como.

The Volunteers plowed through each of their four exhibi-tion opponents en route to a perfect 4-0 record. The com-petition included All-Star Italy (a collection of Italian profes-sional players), the Lithuanian second-division champion BC Atletas, BC Zeta Golubovci from montenegro and Amici del Campetto.

BC Atletas provided the biggest test for Tennessee — the Lithuanian pros defeated Georgia just days before facing the Vols. Atletas also added a victory over Purdue two days after playing UT. Tennessee handed BC Atletas an 82-68 defeat in what would prove to be the Vols’ lowest-scoring game of the tour.

In total, the Big orange boasted an average margin of vic-tory of 49.3 points in its four outings. Twice, in a display of sportsmanship, the Vols requested a running clock during the second half.

In an effort to make the trip an educational opportunity for a team with numerous players who had never traveled abroad, martin called upon UT professor Dr. Robert Bast, who crafted a three-credit course (History 491) appropriately named “renaissance men.” The class met for several on-cam-pus lectures before the trip, preparing the student-athletes for the culture, cities and landmarks they would encounter once they stepped foot on Italian soil.

Highlights of the trip included visits to the roman Colosseum, the ruins of the roman forum, Vati-can City — including St. Peter’s Basilica and the Sistine Chapel — michelangelo’s famous sculpture of David in florence, the Leaning Tower of Pisa, the three towers of San marino and a cruise on Lake Como (the first-ever boat ride for four team members).

$40 MILLION COMMITMENTHoops a Priority on Rocky Top The University of Tennessee has invested more than $40 million into its basketball facili-ties since the end of the 2006-07 campaign.

Prior to the 2007-08 season, UT added a basketball-only practice facility and began the first phase of renovations to Thompson-Boling Arena.

The $19 million first phase of renovations in-cluded the addition of 32 luxury suites that are located in the existing north balcony, a loge area just below the luxury suites that includes 166 side court seats, new seats for the entire arena, a $3 million center-hung scoreboard and concourse refurbishments, such as graphics and other amenities.

The Vols’ state-of-the-art basketball prac-tice facility, Pratt Pavilion, houses two full-size gymnasiums, one for each of the men’s and women’s basketball teams, as well as an ath-letic training room, weight room and film-study room.

The athletic department renovated the men’s and women’s basketball offices at the arena during the 2010-11 campaign, creating a new and impressive “front door” for the basketball programs.
