  • PORTLAND THORNS FC VS. BOSTON BREAKERSWEDNESDAY, AUG. 5, 2015

CATEGORICAL WON-LOST-TIED HEAD COACH PAUL RILEYPaul Riley begins his second season as Thorns FC head coach in 2015 after tak-ing over as the clubs head coach for the 2014 National Womens Soccer League season on Dec. 10, 2013. Riley has compiled a lengthy head coaching career at the youth, collegiate and professional levels.

In his first season, Riley made several key acquistions, helping Thorns FC qualify for the 2014 NWSL Playoffs, one of just two teams to qualify for the postseason in each of the first two seasons of the league. Riley acquired Spain Womens National Team midfielder and former Womens Professional Soccer MVP Vero Boquete, 2013 FIFA Womens World Player of the Year and Germany Womens National Team goalkeeper Nadine Angerer and Australia Womens National Team defender Steph Catley as Portland compiled a 10-8-6 record in Rileys first season.

Previously serving as head coach of the Philadelphia Independence in Womens Professional Soccer, Riley helped build the club into one of the best teams in the league reaching the WPS Championship match in each of the teams two seasons. A two-time WPS Coach of the Year selection (2010, 2011), Riley compiled a 21-14-7 regular-season record in two seasons at the helm in Philadelphia, including a mark of 11-4-3 during the 2011 season.

Having coached at every level, Riley began his womens coaching career with the Long Island Fury of the Womens Premier Soccer League (WPSL) in 2005, leading the club to a national championship in its inaugural 2006 season and a second title in 2009. Riley was named WPSL Coach of the Year in 2009 and, most recently, coached the team during their 2013 WPSL campaign. With the advent of WPSL Elite in 2012, Riley took charge of the New York Fury, helping guide the club to the semifinal round of the playoffs.

A native of Liverpool, England, Riley has served as a youth coach and director of coaching for Long Island-based Albertson Soccer Club since 1994, helping build one of the most well-known youth devel-opment clubs in the Northeast.

Prior to coaching womens soccer, Riley began his professional coaching career as head coach of the Long Island Rough Riders from 1998-2003, earning USL A-League Coach of the Year honors in 1999 and guiding the Rough Riders to the USL D3 Pro League championship in 2002.

At the collegiate level, Riley served as head coach of the LIU Post mens soccer team from 1990-97, registering an 88-49-13 overall record and garnering New York Collegiate Athletic Conference (now East Coast Conference) Coach of the Year recognition five times (1990, 1991, 1993, 1994, 1997).

As a player, Riley spent a 10-year professional career in the Northeast with the Albany Capitals (1988), New Jersey Eagles (1989-92) and Long Island Rough Riders (1994-98).

A midfielder at Adelphi University from 1982-85, Riley holds the programs all-time career record in assists (43). In his senior season in 1985, Riley recorded 47 points (15g, 17a) and helped lead the Panthers to a No. 24 national ranking. Third on the all-time list in career points (121), Riley was named to the Adelphi Athletic Hall of Fame in 1999.

Riley graduated from Adelphi in 1986 with a degree in journalism and English. He earned a masters degree in marketing and advertising from LIU Post in 1989.

Heath became the fourth Thorns FC player to score at the 2015 FIFA Womens World Cup as she tallied the 5th goal in the win for the U.S. Portland is the only team in the NWSL with two players on its roster who have scored a goal in a World Cup Final. In addition, Thorns FC had more players score in the World Cup then any NWSL team (4) as Jodie Taylor scored for England, Christine Sinclair tallied two goals for Canada and Morgan scored in the quarterfinal round against Colombia. Nadine Angerer logged 690 minutes, the most of any NWSL player at the World Cup. The Ger-many international played in all seven of her countrys games at the tournament, including two matches that went to extra time. Thorns FC players combined played 2,854 minutes in the tournament, the most of any NWSL team. In addi-tion, a total of 11 current Thorns FC players have played in a World Cup as both Rachel Van Hollebeke and Ayo appeared in the 2011 version of the tournament.

MILESTONESMidfielders Mana Shim and Kendall Johnson reached 50 career NWSL games played on July 29 against Western New York. Shim joins Allie Long as the only other player to appear in 50 career games for Thorns FC, but forward Christine Sinclair currently sits at 48 career games played for the club as well. Other play-ers that could potentially reach 50 career NWSL matches: midfielders Kaylyn Kyle (48) and Sinead Farrelly (46).

In addition, Sinclair and Long are in a back-and-forth battle for the top spot on the teams all-time scoring list. Sinclair briefly tied Long with her 17th goal against the Flash on July 29, but Long reclaimed the spot registering her 18th career tally late in the same match. Sinclair did move into second place all-time in points (38) with a goal and an assist in the match. Long also became the first player in club history to surpass 5,000 career minutes played.

Long remains tied for first place in career assists for the club with nine, tied with forward Alex Morgan. She can claim sole possession of first place on the list, while also becoming the first player to record double-digit goals and assists if she registers an assist on Wednesday.

LAST MATCH RECAPBehind a goal and an assist from forward Christine Sinclair, Thorns FC claimed their first win on the road since June 21, 2014, defeating the Western New York Flash by a score of 2-0 on July 29 at Sahlens Stadium in Rochester, N.Y.
