Franklin & Marshall won the first meeting in 1996, 34-24, in Lancaster, Pa. The Statesmen have won each of the subsequent games by a combined score of 213-53, including a 35-21 win in Pennsylvania last season. PREVIOUS MEETING: CRAIG SWANSON passed for a school-record four touchdowns to lead visiting Hobart to a 35-21 victory over Franklin & Marshall. Swanson completed 25-of-36 passes for 262 yards. DAN SUOZZI caught eight passes for 87 yards and two touchdowns, while tailback TY GODINHO rushed for 62 yards and a touchdown and caught two passes for 17 yards and another score. ERIC AMPUJA broke the Hobart career record for PATs. Defensively, SKIP GRANTLING led all tacklers with 13, including 11 solo. BICENTENNIAL: Hobart is facing its second Centennial Conference opponent this afternoon. The Statesmen lost their season opener to Centennial foe Dickinson, 17- 16. The Diplomats and Red Devils square off against each other next Saturday. NATIONAL RANKINGS: The Statesmen are peppered throughout the NCAA’s Division III weekly statistical rankings. JAMIE ANDERSON is second in interceptions (1.0/gm) and third in passes defended, while JIMMY GRADIS is tied for 33rd in interceptions (0.7). As a team, Hobart leads the nation in turnover margin (+3.5/gm), is sixth in pass efficiency defense (73.0), 16th in scoring defense (11.8 papg) and 40th in rushing defense (104.5 yds/g). TOP GUN: Senior quarterback CRAIG SWANSON became Hobart’s career passing king against Rochester on Oct. 11. He threw for 99 yards against the Yellowjackets raising his career total to 4,520, eclipsing the six-year-old benchmark of 4,501 yards set by GREG HELMER ’97. Swanson now holds 24 school records, including all three (game, season, career) for passing yards and passing touchdowns. HERE’S THE KICKER: Junior ERIC AMPUJA needs just three more points to break SHAWN FAZIO’S (Class of ’81) career record of 102 points by a kicker. Ampuja’s 67 extra points already stand as the career mark. With 11 career field goals made, Ampuja is more than halfway to Fazio’s career record of 19 FGM. PETER PIPER PICKED A PECK: But the Hobart defense has picked even more. The Statesmen have recorded 12 interceptions this season, including five against both Union and Rochester. Overall, the defense has 23 takeaways against just nine giveaways by the offense for an impressive +14 turnover margin. IN CASE YOU’RE WONDERING: The Hobart record for interceptions in a season is 25, established by the 1999 squad. With 12 picks to date, the 2003 Statesmen are on pace to raise that standard to 27. The individual single season record is nine, shared by BILL PALMER ’94 and ERIC NEWSOME ’99. With four already, JAMIE ANDERSON is on pace to match that mark. MOTIVATIONAL SPEAKER: Only his players know what Coach MIKE CRAGG says in the locker room at halftime, but whatever it is, it’s working. Since the start of the 2000 season, the third quarter has belonged to Hobart. During that 34 game span, the Statesmen have posted 21 third quarter shutouts and allowed just two teams to score more than seven points, Widener in 2000, and Ithaca in 2001. Having outscored the opposition 245-83 in the third quarter, Hobart is 25-9 in those games. 2002 RESULTS SEPTEMBER Sat. 14 DICKINSON W, 27-3 Sat. 28 *at Union W, 14-6 OCTOBER Sat. 5 *ST. TOP TACKLER: Opponents would be smart to avoid senior linebacker DAVID SZENTESYwho has led the Statesmen in tackles in each of the last two seasons. He finished 2002with 76 tackles, the most by a Statesman since 1997, and a team-best 8.5 tackles for aloss. A 2002 All-UCAA first-team honoree, the native of Lackawanna had a team-high six fumble recoveries and 4.5 sacks. Through four games, Szentesy is again pacingthe defense with 28 stops, including two sacks.

HARD TO TY UP: Junior TY GODINHO leads the UCAA in rushing touchdowns (5), issecond in scoring (7.5 ppg), and is third in rushing (74.0 yds/g). He led the UCAA inrushing last season with 958 yards, the most by a Hobart back since KEITH BRANDON ’01gained 1,052 in 1999. Godinho also produced 14 rushing touchdowns, the most by aStatesman since Brandon tallied 15 in 1998.

RENAISSANCE MAN: Junior DAN SUOZZI is arguably the best all-around player in the UCAA.Coming off a season that saw him earn first-team All-UCAA accolades at wide receiver, punter, and return specialist, he currently leads the league in all purpose yards per game(128.2), is second in punting average (36.0 yds/p) and receiving yards per game (76.2).

LONG RANGE FORECAST: At his current pace of 62.4 receiving yards per game, DANSUOZZI will break the Hobart career mark on Oct. 23,2004, at St. Lawrence. He needsjust 642 yards to break 2002 Hobart Hall of Fame Inductee SCOTT GEISE’s (Class of’83) career record of 1,889.

DOUBLE EDGED SWORD: If opponents think that shutting down wide receiver DANSUOZZI means putting a stop to the Statesmen’s passing game, they better think again.Junior wide receiver RICK PIÑERO leads the team in receptions (20) and has caught halfof the team’s six passing touchdowns.

MR. ROBINSON’S NEIGHBORHOOD: First-year outside linebacker NOLAN ROBINSON hasmade himself at home in Hobart’s defense. The native of Johnson City, N.Y., is secondon the team in tackles with 27 (13 solo), including three for a loss. He has twiceearned the UCAA Rookie of the Week award. A two-year captain and All-Metroselection at JCHS, Robinson was also an All-State wrestler for the Wildcats.

PIANO MAN: Sophomore JIMMY GRADIS is the football team’s resident pianist. A nativeof Greenlawn, N.Y., he has played the organ at his church since he was in the ninthgrade. On the gridiron, Gradis has been a “Big Shot.” This afternoon he is making hissecond start at the outside linebacker position vacated by 2002 UCAA DefensivePlayer of the Year TIM BOOTH ’03. In his first start last week, he led the team with ninetackles, two interceptions, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery. As a first-year, heplayed defensive back, shared the team lead in interceptions (3), and finished fifth onthe team in tackles (50).

8 SECONDS: Not exactly a thrilling stat when discussing 40-yard dash times, but to first-year defensive end ANDY PURDIE eight seconds takes on an entirely different meaning.A graduate of nearby Victor High School, Purdie is a bull rider in his spare time. Whenyou’ve been thrown from a 2,000-pound animal, fighting off a block and chasing downa quarterback doesn’t seem that daunting. The Sept. 27, UCAA Rookie of the Week, has four tackles to his credit, including a sack and a forced fumble.

STREAK BUSTERS: Hobart’s 35-3 win over the Dutchmen spelled the end of a couple ofstreaks in the Hobart-Union series. The win for the home team marked the first timesince 1996 that the host produced a victory. The dominating performance by theStatesmen defense marked the first time in 25 meetings that the Dutchmen did notscore a touchdown against Hobart. The last time the Statesmen kept Union out of theend zone was 1975 in a 21-0 win.

PRESEASON: The Football Gazette named junior ALEX BELL to its preseason All-Americateam after an impressive sophomore season. The 6-3, 330-pound offensive lineman isan excellent run blocker and a stalwart pass blocker.

GENEVA, N.Y.—A swarming defense led Hobart to a 35-3 victory over Union at BoswellField. JAMIE ANDERSON (pictured left) led the charge with the first three interceptions of hiscareer, racking up 51 return yards in addition to five tackles and four pass breakups. The winevened the Statesmen’s record at 1-1, 1-0 in the UCAA, and marked the first time Hobarthas beaten the Dutchmen (2-1, 1-1) in Geneva since 1978.

Anderson’s first pick, returned 24 yards to the Union one, set up a single yard dive by TYGODINHO with 3:21 remaining in the opening frame.

The offense was hitting on all cylinders in the second quarter, scoring 28 unanswered totake a 35-0 lead into the locker room. DAVID SZENTESY put Hobart in position for its secondscore with a 25-yard interception return to the Union 17. Szentesy finished with six tackles, including a sack. Five plays later, Godinho posted his second TD, this time from two yardsout with 10:12 remaining in the half. Anderson’s second pick also led to a Hobart score, thanks to a 27-yard return to the Union 5. JACK HOLLERAN took the first snap in for six.

Hobart’s fourth touchdown was a record breaker. Taking over on the Hobart 12-yardline, Swanson heaved a pass down field to DAN SUOZZI. Suozzi made the catch near theHobart 45, juked a defender and outran another for an 88-yard scoring play. The longest passplay in Hobart history, it eclipsed the 85-yard mark set on a GREG HELMER ’94 to NATE WAYE’95 pass on Oct. 22, 1994, against Alfred.

Swanson completed 15-of-22 for 209 yards, while Suozzi made four catches for 107yards. RICK PIÑERO led Hobart with a game-high six catches for 38 yards. Godinho, whofinished with 63 yards rushing, closed out the first half scoring with his third TD of thegame, an 11-yard scamper with 1:17 remaining.

The Dutchmen offense meanwhile, managed no yards of offense in the first 15 minutes, and just 76 in the first half. Union particularly struggled with third down conversions, finding success on just three of 17 opportunities for the game.

UCAA TEAM STAT LEADERS Oct. 11, Rochester 17, HOBART 13

GENEVA—The Hobart defense forced eight turnovers and CRAIG SWANSON became theCollege’s all-time leading passer, but it was Rochester that secured the victory, 17-13.

A sloppy game for both offenses, Rochester quarterback Aaron Molisani wasintercepted five times and the Yellowjackets lost three fumbles, but a one-yard Molisanikeeper with 10:54 remaining in the fourth quarter proved to be the only second half pointsand the margin of victory.

From that point on, Hobart took just one drive deep into Rochester territory. TheStatesmen took over on the Yellowjacket’s 49 with 3:14 remaining. Five plays later, Swansoncompleted a 16-yard pass to DAN SUOZZI to break the school’s career passing record.

Swanson finished with 99 yards passing to raise his career total to 4,520, 19 more thanthe previous record-holder GREG HELMER ’97.

Facing fourth and one with under a minute remaining, Hobart ran a screen pass to theleft that Rochester sniffed out and stopped for a six-yard loss. From there Molisani only hadto take a knee to secure the win.

The Yellowjackets opened the scoring 26-yard second quarter field goal. The Statesmen punted three plays later, but recovered a muffed fair catch at the

Rochester 22. Eight plays later, RICK PIÑERO pulled in a three-yard TD pass from Swanson. The Yellowjackets responded with the longest drive of the half, marching 65 yards in 12

plays to take a 10-7 lead on a 10-yard Molisani to David Ferris pass. Molisani finished 18-of-42 for 200 yards.

Not to be denied a lead at the half, Hobart took advantage of a poor Rochester punt onthe final drive of the opening 30 minutes, moving 36 yards in nine plays, capped by a nine-yard Swanson to Suozzi strike. The extra point was blocked and the Statesmen led 13-10.

Rochester’s game-winning drive covered 79 yards in 12-plays. The Statesmen twiceappeared to have stopped the Yellowjackets with pass breakups on third down, but bothtimes Hobart was whistled for personal fouls—the first for a helmet-to-helmet hit and theother that moved the ball to the Hobart 21 on an early late hit.

Defensively, JIMMY GRADIS, DAVID SZENTESY, and WALT BENNETT made nine, eight, andeight tackles, respectively. Gradis and RYAN SMITH each recorded a pair of interceptions.

Molisani’s final interception of the afternoon was to his former high school teammate atCanandaigua Academy, JAMIE ANDERSON.
