Mustangs are Masterful at Memorial Since Bill Maskill took over the reins of the MSU football program in 2002, the Mustangs have compiled a 53-11 record at Memorial Stadium/Joe Golding Field - good for an impressive .828 winning percentage. MSU has a 87-48 overall record in its 26th season playing home contests at Memorial Stadium. The Mustangs are 60-13 (.822) at home since 2000. MSU has won 24 of its last 25 regular season games at Memorial Stadium dating back to the 2008 season.

Maroon September The Mustangs have been golden in the months of August and September all the through the Bill Maskill era which began in 2002. MSU stands at 43-9 (.827) in games played before Oct. 1 in the Maskill era. Since 2006, Midwestern stands an outstanding 31-3 to start the season. All three September losses have been by three points, a 20-17 decision at Angelo State on Sept. 26, 2009, a 20-17 loss at Tarleton State on Sept. 8, 2012, and the 27-24 loss to Tarleton on Sept. 14, 2013.

Second Frame Success The Mustangs have allowed teams to get out to a lead on them in 2014, but they have responded to the call to arms afterward. MSU has scored over half of its points this young season in the second quarter. All told, MSU has scored 45 of its 82 points in the second period. The Mustangs scored 24 points in the second quarter against Missouri S&T and then added 21 points in the second frame against Eastern New Mexico.

Second Half Stinginess While Midwestern State is scoring well in the second quarter, the defense is locking up the entire second half. The Mustangs have allowed only 10 points in the second half this season, all in the third quarter. MSU has not allowed a fourth quarter score this season.

Close Calls with Texans The Midwestern State-Tarleton State has been a close one recently, with four of the last five contests differing by five points or less, with three (including the last two) decided by a field goal.

Master and Pupils The Midwestern State-Tarleton State rivalry in football is heightened by the familiarity of the two head coaches. Bill Maskill has led the Mustangs since the 2003 season. Tarleton’s Cary Fowler was the defensive coordinator at MSU in 2002, and served as Maskill’s defensive coordinator through the 2007 season. Additionally, TSU offensive coordinator Justin Carrigan, was a member of the MSU staff from 2005-2008, and defensive ends coach Jacob Martin played for MSU during the 2007 and 2008 seasons.

The Pony Express redux The Mustangs offense, the Pony Express, is still being tweaked as the 2014 edition emerges. Week one it was 517 yards, week two it was 433 for the Mustangs. But the mix was different. For the first time since 2009, the Mustangs had a quarterback throw for over 300 yards accounting for 70 percent of the total offense against Eastern New Mexico. This from an offense that has a run of four straight seasons leading the LSC in rushing. The Mustangs averaged 261.9 yards a game last season, ranking 10th in NCAA Division II. MSU is third in the LSC in rushing and 37th nationally with its 208.5 yard average on the ground. The Mustangs have a strong stable of backs led by sophomore Dante Taylor who is averaging 78.0 yards a game (fifth in the LSC and 77th nationally), and senior Chauncey Harris at 39.0 ypg. But red-shirt freshmen Don Jerry (5-10, 175, Grand Prairie, Texas/Arlington Bowie) and Vandy Parkes (5-11, 195, Carrollton, Texas/Hebron) showed promise. Jerry with 63 yards and Parkes with 26 yards. The quarterback duo of senior Jake Glover showed a big arm last week, throwing for 303 yards against ENMU and three touchdowns. While he didn’t play against the Hounds, sophomore Quade Coward was effective against Missouri S&T and has every appearance that it will continue. Coward was a perfect 4-of-4 for 144 yards and a touchdown. A stars are flickering in the receiving corps, with Levy Wilson hauling in a 74-yard scoring strike and Statron Jones grabbing 65- and 52-yard touchdown throws against ENMU. This is even with Joe Sand-ers, who led the team with 363 receiving yards last season, not having a reception in the first two weeks. The offensive line returns the middle, with pre-season All-America senior center Shadow Stokes (6-3, 290, Kilgore, Texas) flanked by guards Case Winkler (6-5, 310, Sr, Burnet, Texas) and Joel Onyia (6-4, 295, San Marcos, Texas).

GAME 3: SEPTEMBER 27, 2014 Game Notes Page 4

Chompin’ at the Bit Chauncey Chauncey Harris showed well what he can do when a hole opens up. Against Eastern New Mexico, Harris found a crease and bolted for a 35-yard touchdown early in the fourth quarter that helped secure the win for the Mustangs. It was one of his six carries for 52 yards on the day. Harris has 78 yards on 16 carries this season, averaging 39.0 yards a game. The 5-9, 175 pound senior of San Antonio, Texas/Converse Judson ran his way to being the third-leading rusher in the Lone Star Conference in 2012, collecting 799 yards (79.9 per game) to rank 62nd in NCAA Divi-sion II. Harris led the LSC in yards per carry, gaining 10.8 yards each time he touched the ball. Because of an injury during fall camp in 2013, Harris didn’t get to suit up until the third game at A&M-Commerce. He showed his speed with a 40-yard touchdown scamper for MSU’s first score. But Harris suffered a broken ankle in the second half at Commerce that has ended his ‘13 campaign. Chauncey racked up three games of 145 yards or better in 2012, with his best performance coming in the regular season finale against West Georgia at Memorial Stadium. Harris posted the best rushing game by a running back and the fourth-best in MSU history after dashing 232 yards on 16 carries with two touchdowns, with 169 yards on 12 carries in the second half of that game. He also had 155 yards against Eastern New Mexico and 148 yards at AT&T Stadium against Texas A&M-Commerce. Harris ran for 239 yards and two touchdowns on 39 carries as a freshman in 2010, while playing in 11 games for the Mustangs. He also returned kickoffs. However he also wanted to run track and trans-ferred to Division I North Texas to do so in 2011. But he did not compete and returned to MSU to continue playing football.

Look Out for Levy Junior receiver Levy Wilson has made quite an impression in his first games at Midwestern State. The 5-9, 180 pound transfer from Albany, Calif. via San Mateo JC, etched his name into history during the Lone Star Football Festival with the fourth-longest pass play in AT&T Stadium Collegiate history with his 74-yard, tackle-breaking, touchdown catch from Jake Glover against Eastern New Mexico. He also has a 65-yard strike from Quade Coward he caught in stride for a touchdown vs. Missouri S&T. Wilson has six receptions on the season for 224 yards with the two scores, averaging 112.0 yards a game to lead the Lone Star Conference and rank 18th in NCAA Division II. Wilson became the first receiver since Andy Tanner to post consecutive 100-yard receiving games, when Tanner hauled in 118 yards against Cen-tral Oklahoma (Oct. 24, 2009) and at Eastern New Mexico (Oct. 31, 2009).

Daunting Dante Sophomore Dante Taylor has already shown why he could be the next horse in the stable of the Mustangs’ vaunted Pony Express. While the 5-9, 190 pounder from Plano, Texas/Plano East ran for only 28 yards on 11 carries against Eastern New Mexico, he scampered 128 yards on 15 carries with a touchdown against Missouri S&T, that included his 58-yard score. It was his fourth career 100-yard game, tying him for 11th all-time at MSU. He also caught two passes for 39 yards. He is fifth in the LSC and 77th in Division II with his 78.0 yards a game this season, rushing for 156 yards on 26 carries. This after Taylor ran for 552 yards on 82 carries with four touchdowns as the number two back to All-American Keidrick Jackson last season. His 55.2 yard average was 10th in the Lone Star Conference, as he averaged 6.7 yards a carry. He posted long runs of 59, 57 and 56 yards. On a slow, wet, natural grass surface at West Georgia and still churned out 123 yards on nine car-ries for a 13.7 yards per carry average. Against Texas A&M-Kingsville, Taylor had 10 totes for 100 yards, a 10.0 average, and racked up 128 yards on 10 carries with two touchdowns, (a 12.8 average) versus Menlo.

LSC Offensive Player of the Week Senior quarterback Jake Glover took his game to a whole new level last Saturday against Eastern at AT&T. The 6-4, 220 signal caller from White Settlement, Texas/Brewer, completed 12-of-22 passes for 303 yards and three touchdowns against the Hounds. He completed the fourth and eighth longest passes in AT&T Stadium Collegiate History with his 74-yard strike to Levy Wilson and his 68-yard toss to Statron Jones. The feat earned him Lone Star Conference Offensive Player of the Week for the second time in his career. Glover is 18-of-41 on the season for 389 yards with three TDs and no interceptions. He has an efficiency rating of 147.75, fourth in the LSC and 36th in Division II. Last season, he completed 90-of-161 for 1237 yards with 10 TDs and four interceptions. His efficiency rat-ing was 135.97, third in the LSC. He accounted for five touchdowns in the MSU 49-43 win at Angelo State in 2013, becoming just the sixth player in MSU history to account for at least five TDs in a game and the first to do so in two seasons. Glover completed 7-of-15 passes for 110 yards and three touchdowns, while rushing for 51 yards and two more scores as he earned LSC Offensive Player of the Week honors.

Tight End Tandem Midwestern is blessed to have not just one, but two outstanding tight ends. Senior Mark Strange (6-5, 260, Wichita Falls, Texas/Rider) and junior Derek Lockhart (6-3, 240, San Antonio, Texas/Converse Judson) are both extremely effective weapons as both receivers and blockers. Strange was tied for second on the team in recep-tions last year with 16 (in eight games), while account-ing for 202 yards and a touchdown. Lockhart played in six games, chalking up four passes, but accounted for two touchdowns and 77 total yards. Each have started a game, with Strange recording the only reception, for 12 yards.

Quality Quade Sophomore quarterback Quade Coward kept the competition for signal caller strong. The 6-4, 215 pound sophomore from Cleburne, Texas, led the Mustangs to touchdowns on his first two possessions -- using just three plays. On the first, he gave the ball to Dante Taylor who ran for 58 yards on his second carry for six. Then on his first pass attempt of the season, Cow-ard connected with Levi Wilson in stride for a 65-yard touchdown, the season’s longest pass completion. Coward went 4-for-4 for 144 yards, but suffered three sacks that wiped out his one other rush for 15 yards.

Statron hauls them in Sophomore receiver Statron Jones had quite a welcome at AT&T Stadium against Eastern. The 5-9, 170 pound sophomore from Manor, Texas, hauled in four receptions for 127 yards to lead all receivers in the game with the Hounds. Jones recorded the eighth-longest pass reception in AT&T Stadium Collegiate history with his 68-yard scoring grab from Jake Glover to go with his 52-yard score from Glover in the contest. Jones has five catches for 151 yards and the two touchdowns this season, averaging 30.2 yards a catch and ranking seventh in the LSC and 85 in NCAA II with 75.5 yards a game.

Kicking a new adventure The Mustangs used all three kickers once again this past week, however only one did the kick scoring. Junior Andy Alkhazshvilly (5-11, 230, Mansfield, Texas) buried all six of his point-after-touchdown kicks for six points against Eastern New Mexico. For the season, Alkhazshvilly has connected on 10-of-10 PATs and on 2-of-3 field goal attempts with a long of 40 against Missouri S&T. Last season he was 1-of-1 on PATs and 1-of-2 on field goals (connecting on a 41-yard attempt against McMurry). He has also taken the most kickoffs this season. Sophomore Dylan McLain (5-11, 165, Waxa-hachie, Texas), a transfer from Trinity Valley CC, kicked off some at AT&T Stadium. He also hit field goals from 30 and 41 yards against Missouri S&T. Senior Brenden Grimley (6-1, 200, Frisco, Texas/Centennial) has kickoff in both games MSU has played this season. He is 6-of-6 on his point-after-touchdown attempts, five in 2012 and one in 2011.

Powerful Punting Redshirt freshman Mitchell Hinton of Dallas, Texas/Lake Highlands has won over the MSU coaching staff with his strong leg. In the Eastern New Mexico game at AT&T Stadium, Hinton averaged 43.4 yards on five punts, including a long of 47. He leads the Lone Star Conference and ranks 18th in NCAA Division II with his 42.8 yard average, that in-cludings three punts inside the 20 and four fair catches. The District 9-5A Special Teams Player of the Year as a punter and kicker at Lake Highlands, the 6-2, 205 pound frosh posted a long punt of 53 yards as a senior and nailed two clutch game-winning field goals.

Defense Looking for Strong 2014 The Midwestern State defense allowed 394 total yards to Eastern New Mexico last Saturday, but only 17 points as the Mustangs won big. The Mustangs defense again appears strong, averag-ing 352.5 yards of total defense (third in the Lone Star Conference) and 20.0 points (second in the LSC). One of the bright spots for the MSU “D” is the pass defense, ranking second in the conference in yardage (186.5) and leading the league in pass ef-ficiency defense (95.92 rating). Last year, MSU led the Lone Star Conference in total defense (341.7 yards a game), scoring defense (23.9 points per outing), passing defense (188.5 yards a contest), pass efficiency defense (109.33 rating) and turnover margin (1.5 per game, fourth in NCAA Divi-sion II). The Mustangs junior whip safety Marqui Christian is fourth nationally in tackles with 14.5 per game.

First Half D-Time The Mustangs first half defense has given them a distinct advantage in games the last few years. While the trend held has held fairly true, it didn’t against Eastern New Mexico where the Mustangs allowed 220 yards. In ten games in 2013, MSU allowed an average of 172.3 yards in the half (72.1 on the ground and 110.0 passing), while giving up 11.1 points. MSU has scored 21.0 points in the half.

Riascos is the bandit corner Senior Ricardo Riascos is one of the top returning pass bandits in the Lone Star Conference. While he didn’t get one last week, the 6-0, 190 pound cornerback from Houston, Texas/Travis snared three interceptions in 2013 to rank third in the LSC. “Rico” also collected 33 yards in oskie returns, with 18 yards coming against West Alabama. Riascos helpe the Mustangs to leading the Lone Star Conference with 14 pickoffs on the season, ranking 51st in Division II. Add two more interceptions as a sophomore and “Rico” has five career pickoffs, with a nationally tele-vised touchdown snare against Texas A&M-Commerce. In fact, two of his five oskies have come at AT&T Stadium (the TD vs. TAMUC and one last season against Tarleton State). He was second on the tackle chart last week against Missouri S&T with five tackles and a breakup.

First Half Defense in 2013

A Marqui performer Midwestern State whip safety Marqui Christian is making a splash for his strong play this season. The 6-1, 200 pound junior from Spring, Texas, a first team All-Lone Star Conference and second team All-Super Region 4 in 2013 after posting 95 total tack-les, put his name in the record books against Eastern New Mexico. Christian tied the AT&T Stadium Collegiate re-cord with his 18 tackles against the Greyhounds in the Lone Star Football Festival, matching Oregon State’s Lance Mitchell’s 18 stops against TCU in 2010. It was also the most in LSFF history. His 18 tackles were the fourth-highest total in MSU history, missing MSU’s NCAA II high of 19 by Esrom Martinez at Northeastern State in 2000, and the most since 2006. He opened the season with 11 tackles, including a tackle for a loss of four yards, against MST, and now has seven double-digit tackle games in his career. He also snagged the first interception of the season that set up a score just before halftime against the MST. Christian’s 95 stops last season were the most in a season for an MSU player since Cornelius Cooper had 100 in 2004. His five double-digit tackle games were one behind the Mustangs Division II era record of six in a season held by Ezrom Martinez in 2000. Christian was twice named the Lone Star Confer-ence Defensive Player of the Week, and a Beyond Sport Network National Player of the Week.tallied his fifth game of 10-plus tackles with his game leading 12 tackles at Angelo State. Christian was fifth in the LSC in tackles with an average of 9.5 per contest that is 46th in Division II. Christian is also known for recovering and re-turning West Texas A&M’s bad punt snap in 2012 for the game-winning touchdown to win the LSC title.

Daunting Dominique Junior Dominique Williams has quickly become one of the most feared return men in the Lone Star Conference. The 5-8, 180 pound junior from Houston, Texas/Cle-ments, who is also a starting cornerback for the Mus-tangs, returned the first punt of the season 47-yards for a touchdown in the win over Missouri S&T. He was nmaed the LSC Special Teams Player of the Week. Williams has four punt returns for 70 yards, a 17.5 yard average, that is second in the LSC and ninth in NCAA II. He also has four kickoff returns for 110 yards, averaging 27.5 yard average, second in the conference and 35th nationally. He is first in the con-ference and 63rd nationally in combined kick returns (180 total yards). Williams is only the second MSU player to return two punts for touchdowns in his career (he also had a 68-yard punt return against McMurry in 2013). He joins NAIA All American Henry Johnson who returned two punts for TDs from 1992-95. Williams, an honorable mention All-Lone Star Conference return specialist last season, has two career LSC Special Teams Player of the Week award. Williams 68-yard touchdown against McMurry equaled the fifth-longest punt return in MSU his-tory and was the first scoring punt return since a 70-yarder by BeeJay Mathis against Northeastern State on Sept. 15, 2007.

Laudermilk and clear Junior linebacker Daniel Laudermilk is one of the top defenders in the Lone Star Conference. He collected nine tackles vs. Eastern New Mexico after netting only three stops in the season opener. He is averaging 6.0 tackles per game. The 6-1, 225 pound junior from Austin, Texas, was sterling from the get-go last year and ranked second on the team with 66 total tackles, including 24 solo stops. He ranked 14th in the LSC in tackles, averaging 6.6 per contest. He was also second on the team in tackles for losses (4.0 for -12 yards). In his first start last season, Laudermilk tallied 10 tackles (against Tarleton State), added 10 more against Texas A&M-Kingsville and posted his season-best of 12 at Eastern New Mexico. A true defensive stalwart, Laudermilk is also a very valuable special teams performers.

First Half Defense in 2014

Rouse wastes no time Junior defensive back Dominique Rouse made a mark in his first game for MSU. The 5-10, 180 pound junior from Apopka, Fla./Winter Park via Eastern Michigan, jumped the route of Eastern New Mexico on his very first play as a Mustang to pickoff Jeremy Buurma and return the pass 55-yards for a touchdown in the second quarter. The return was the fifth-longest interception return in AT&T Stadium Collegiate history, the fourth-longest for a touchdown. Rouse also had two pass breakups in the contest.
