Game 9 Review...Clemson Controls Rattlers of Florida A&M in 80-57 Victory Clemson put together a 16-2 run coming out of the halftime break and pulled away to an easy 80-57 victory over Florida A&M on Saturday at Littlejohn Coliseum. The Tigers, coming off a week off due to final exams, improved to 6-3 on the season. The loss dropped the Rattlers to 4-7 overall and 0-6 on the road. Jordan Roper, a freshman guard out of Columbia, SC, led the Tigers in scoring in his first career start. He posted a season-best 16 points, a high in 2012-13 for any Clemson newcomer. Roper buried 6-of-8 field goals overall, including 4-of-5 from three-point range. He also added three steals. Three other players reached double figures for Brad Brownell’s team: Adonis Filer (14), Devin Booker (12) and K.J. McDaniels (11). Starting point guard Rod Hall collected a career-high 10 assists, while senior Milton Jennings added a season-best 11 rebounds in just 27 minutes. The Tigers shot 52.6 percent from the field on their way to a season-high 80 points. Clemson made 30 of 57 field goals, including 5-of-17 from long range. Clemson shot 15-of-22 at the charity stripe and enjoyed a +17 advantage on the boards. Conversely, FAMU shot just 31.8 percent overall and was outscored in points off turnovers by Clemson by a 22-10 margin. Clemson led 41-31 at the break, despite 19 points in the opening half from FAMU guard Reggie Lewis. He finished the game with 26 points and made 6-of-8 from three-point range. After a three-point play on a one-handed alley-oop dunk from Hall to McDaniels gave Clemson a 26-15 advantage, the lead quickly narrowed to three on a layup by Muhammad Abdul-Aleem and back-to-back trifectas by Lewis. Holding a 26-23 lead, Clemson responded with a 6-0 run that included a pass from Hall off the glass to a trailing McDaniels, who emphatically slammed it home. The Tigers stretched their lead to 57-33 by converting on their first six field goal attempts of the second frame. Roper hit a pair of long-range shots in the run, while Booker got loose against the smaller Rattlers inside for a pair of baskets as well. Clemson was able to empty its bench in the second half, as all 11 players that dressed played at least eight minutes. Damarcus Harrison came off the bench to grab a career-best eight rebounds, while sophomore Bernard Sullivan returned to action after missing the last game due to a concussion. The Gastonia, NC native made a pair of jumpers and added three rebounds and two steals in 13 minutes.

Most Recent Meeting...Clemson Drops Heartbreaker at the Buzzer to Coastal, 60-59 Coastal Carolina’s Chris Gradnigo scored on a putback off his own miss at the buzzer to lift the Chanticleers to a 60-59 victory over Clemson on Nov. 22, 2011. Andre Young led the Tigers with 20 points. “It was a very disappointing loss,” Clemson Head Coach Brad Brownell said. “We had chances to make big stops late in the game and did not get a stop when we needed one.” Following a Young miss with 29 seconds to play, Coastal Carolina set up for one last shot. Gradnigo got a good look at the basket but missed on a jumper. However, no one blocked out guard Anthony Raffa as he secured the offensive rebound and called a timeout with nine seconds to play. The Chanticleers then set up for the last shot. Gradnigo had a one-on-one matchup with Clemson’s Bryan Narcisse, where he drove to the foul line and lifted a floater with three seconds left that bounced off the back of the rim and right back to him, and he tipped it in after Narcisse fell as time expired. “I drew it up, but I didn’t set up the second shot,” Coastal Carolina Head Coach Cliff Ellis said. “We were just fortunate.

We wanted the ball in Chris’ hands and fortunately, he was able to make that extra play.” The Tigers took a 59-55 lead with 1:31 to play on a Tanner Smith three-pointer from the right side, but Clemson could not get a stop down the stretch as Coastal scored on four of its last five possessions. Clemson thought it had found itself after building a 33-21 lead late in the first half thanks to a 12-0 run. Andre Young, who led the Tigers in scoring, produced 10 of the 12 points, including a pair of three-pointers. Clemson led 33-25 at the break. The Tiger defense held Coastal Carolina to 33.3 percent shooting in the first half. “In the first half we played well defensively,” Brownell said. “The field goal percentage was a little misleading in the second half because of the fastbreak layups. We can’t guard those, but in the end we did not defend like we needed to. It was not any better defensively because we did not get stops late.”

Hall Records Single-Game Assist High Under Brad Brownell Clemson point guard Rod Hall has had a steady hand for the Tigers the entire season. But, he was extremely impressive in his last outing for Clemson in terms of facilitating the offense. He produced a career-high 10 assists, also a single-game high by an individual in 74 games under Head Coach Brad Brownell. The previous benchmark had been nine assists, achieved on two occasions by former Tiger guard Andre Young. He had nine in 2010-11 against Maryland, and nine in 2011-12 against College of Charleston. Hall’s previous best was eight assists earlier this season in a win over UTEP.

CLEMSON vs. COASTAL CAROLINAseason with the 16-point effort. Roper’s productivity wasn’t limited to only the offensive end of the floor, however. He also led Clemson with three steals, including one off an interception at mid-court which he took the distance for a slam in the second half of Clemson’s 80-57 win. Roper’s 16 were the most by a Tiger freshman since K.J. McDaniels posted 16 at Florida State in 2011-12. The four three-point goals were the most by a Clemson freshman since Noel Johnson made four in the 2010 ACC Tournament against NC State.

Roper Makes Impact in Homecoming Trip Clemson freshman Jordan Roper grew up in the shadows of the University of South Carolina. The two-time all-state selection at Irmo High School scored 1,698 points in his prep career - second in Irmo history behind former Gamecock legend B.J. McKie. Roper led Irmo to a state championship in AAAA classification as a junior in 2011. That is why Roper’s return to Columbia for the Dec. 2 game against South Carolina was such a sweet one for the 5-foot-11 guard. He scored five points in 16 minutes, the last two of which came off an important steal and slam to help the Tigers break the game open early in the second half.

Booker Fourth Among Active ACC Players in Rebounds Senior center Devin Booker is fourth among active players in the ACC with 566 career rebounds. Mason Plumlee is first with 828 boards, followed by Richard Howell (761) and Reggie Johnson (718). Booker averaged a team-high 7.0 per game in 2011-12 as a junior, and leads this year’s squad with a 7.7 per game figure.

Booker Approaching Statistical Milestones Clemson center Devin Booker is approaching several personal milestones from a statistical standpoint. The 6-foot-8 Booker needs:• 13 rebounds to pass Raymond Jones for 24th all-time in Clemson history• 151 points to become the 36th player in Clemson history with 1,000 for his career

McDaniels’ Improvement on Full Display This Season One of the most improved players within the Atlantic Coast Conference throughout the early portion of the 2012-13 season has to be Clemson sophomore K.J. McDaniels. The 6-foot-6 wing has increased his productivity across the board and become one of the Tigers’ leaders. A quick look to the chart below shows that McDaniels is significantly ahead of last year’s pace in nearly every statistical measure.

McDaniels’ Improvement from Freshman to Sophomore SeasonCategory 2011-12 (30 games) 2012-13 (9 games) DifferencePoints Per Game 3.9 11.9 +8.0Rebounds Per Game 1.8 5.1 +3.3Minutes Per Game 10.1 26.4 +16.3Assists Per Game 0.2 1.0 +0.8Blocks Per Game 0.7 2.3 +1.6Steals Per Game 0.3 1.4 +1.1Three-Point Goals Per Game 0.2 1.2 +1.0

Sullivan Returns After Sitting Out Arizona with Concussion Sophomore forward Bernard Sullivan missed the Arizona game after suffering a concussion during the South Carolina game on Dec. 2. Sullivan was hit in the temple on a driving layup attempt in the first half, but did not experience any issues until later that night. He was diagnosed with a slight concussion and was not cleared to practice until Monday, Dec. 10. Sullivan started games against Purdue and South Carolina when Milton Jennings was suspended. He returned to action for the Tigers against Florida A&M and posted four points, three rebounds and two steals in 13 minutes. Sullivan has averaged 13.3 minutes per game backing up Jennings.

Harrison Makes Key Shot at South Carolina Damarcus Harrison, who transferred in from BYU after the school did not have a scholarship available after a delay with his Mormon mission plans, has averaged 5.6 points and 3.6 rebounds per game off the bench most of this season. He has been a solid addition for the Tigers, scoring in every game with a high of 10 at Furman. He started the Arizona game following T.J. Sapp’s transfer announcement earlier that week. Harrison played a crucial role in Clemson’s 64-55 road victory at South Carolina. With the Tigers up four and less than four minutes to play, Harrison caught a skip pass from Rod Hall on the right wing and rattled home a three to push the lead to 54-47, giving Clemson complete momentum down the stretch.

Jennings Improved in Many Areas Early in Senior Season Clemson senior Milton Jennings has shown improvement across several areas of his individual game so far in the 2012-13 season. His overall (.500), three-point (.435) and free throw (.737) numbers are all up from his junior season. He is second on the team averaging 6.0 rebounds per game, also a higher number on average than his junior year.

Most importantly from a statistical standpoint, however, has been Jennings’ care with the basketball. He possesses a 14-to-8 assist-to-turnover ratio through seven appearances, an average of just over one turnover per game. Last season, Jennings had twice as many turnovers (66) as assists (31). For his career, he has a 79-to-165 ratio. As you can see, cutting down on turnovers was a focal point in the offseason.

Statistical Streaks & Trends• Devin Booker has pulled in seven or more rebounds in six straight games and is averaging 9.2 per contest during that time.• K.J. McDaniels has reached double figures in the scoring column six times this season, one more than his mark from last season in 21 fewer games.• McDaniels has blocked at least one shot in five consecutive games.• McDaniels has made 11 three-pointers in seven games, four more than he made as a freshman in 30 appearances.• Adonis Filer is the only Tiger freshman to score in each game so far. He has reached double figures in five games, third-most on the team behind Booker and McDaniels.• Filer has attempted at least six free throws in each of Clemson’s last three games - making 7-of-10 in games against South Carolina and Florida A&M.• Jordan Roper has made at least one three-pointer in five of Clemson’s nine games. He is coming off a season-high four makes against Florida A&M.• Rod Hall has led or tied for the team lead in assists in six of nine games, and is coming off a career-best 10 against Florida A&M.

Clemson Forming its own SWAT Team No, not a Special Weapons and Tactics team. The 2012-13 Clemson team is quickly developing a reputation as one of the top shot-blocking teams in the country. Clemson has swatted away an average of 5.7 shots per game, a figure good enough to lead the Atlantic Coast Conference and rank 18th among the NCAA’s Division I leaders. K.J. McDaniels has been Clemson’s best shot-blocker, despite being a 6-foot-6 wing player. The sophomore has blocked at least one shot in five straight games and has blocked as many as five shots in the road win at South Carolina. Devin Booker, who is second on the team with 10 swats, had five in the game against No. 8 Arizona alone. Milton Jennings also averages one blocked shot per game, while Damarcus Harrison (5) and Landry Nnoko (4) have also shown an ability to provide some timely blocks.

Quick Notes on the Old Spice Classic• Clemson went 2-1 in its first trip to Orlando for the event, falling to Gonzaga (57-49) before defeating UTEP (69-48) and Marist (59-44).• Milton Jennings was named to the All-Tournament Team after averaging 11 points and 5.3 rebounds per game.• Jennings scored a season-high 18 points in the win over UTEP and made a career-best four from outside the arc.• K.J. McDaniels also averaged 11 points per game in the event, which included a career-high 17-point outing against UTEP.• Adonis Filer reached double figures in all three games, scoring eight of his 10 points in the second half of all three.• Clemson held Gonzaga 37 points below its season scoring average entering the first round game. Gonzaga went on to win the event.• Clemson’s .750 three-point percentage vs. UTEP (12-for-16) was an Old Spice Classic single-game record.

Clemson Sets Old Spice Single-Game Shooting Record Clemson struggled to find its three-point shooting touch in the opening round of the Old Spice Classic against Gonzaga, but that was not the case in the Tigers’ next game against UTEP. Clemson came out on fire and made 10-of-12 in the opening half, just one shy of the Clemson record for three-pointers in a half. The Tigers went on to make 12-of-16, a single-game tournament record for three-point percentage (.750). It was also the fifth-best mark in school history. Milton Jennings and K.J. McDaniels both made four apiece, the first time in school history that two forwards made that many in the same game. It was a career-high for both, while McDaniels was perfect in four attempts. It was also the first time any Tiger duo made at least four in the same game since backcourt mates Tanner Smith and Andre Young achieved the feat against North Carolina in the 2011 ACC Tournament semifinal against North Carolina.

CLEMSON vs. COASTAL CAROLINAMonday. The Tigers have yieled just 55.4 points per game, second-best in the ACC.• Clemson’s field goal percentage defense (.381) is fourth-best in the ACC and 37th best among Division I teams.• Seven of Clemson’s nine opponents have scored 57 or less.• Clemson held its first five opponents below 60 points. It was the first such stretch for the program since the 1997-98 season, when Rick Barnes’ final team went Dec. 17 through Dec. 30 without allowing five straight opponents to break 60.• Clemson held No. 12 Gonzaga to just 57 total points, 37 below its season average entering the Nov. 22 contest. The Zags went on to win the Old Spice Classic.• The Tigers held Arizona to 35.5 percent shooting. The No. 8 Wildcats came into the game on Dec. 8 averaging 52 percent on its field goals.• Clemson blocked 12 shots against Arizona, a program high in 74 games under Head Coach Brad Brownell.

Blossomgame to Red-Shirt 2012-13 Season Clemson Head Coach Brad Brownell announced that freshman forward Jaron Blossomgame would use a medical red-shirt and sit out the 2012-13 season. The 6-foot-7 native of Alpharetta, GA has been recovering from a broken leg suffered during a workout in April when he was still enrolled as a senior at Chattahoochee High School. “He made a good jump in progress in late September, so we had held out hope he’d be ready ahead of schedule,” Brownell said. “He’s still improving consistently, but there has not been a significant enough jump within the last two weeks to let me know that he would be ready. He is enjoying his time at Clemson and is improving physically and mentally as a player. We will certainly miss him this season; he’s a terrific athlete who could help our depth in the frontcourt. But, he’ll be better at 22 than he will at 18. “Adding Jaron to our 2013 signees - Austin Ajukwa and Patrick Rooks - will be a boost to our team next season.” Blossomgame is the most decorated of Clemson’s five-man freshman class, earning four-star status from ESPNU, who rated him the nation’s No. 94 prospect in the class of 2012. Blossomgame, a first-team AAAA all-state selection last season, averaged 25.8 points per game and was a standout on the 17 and under Georgia Stars AAU squad last summer. “This will benefit me in the long run,” Blossomgame said. “I can gain experience by watching K.J. McDaniels at our small forward position, and see what Coach Brownell wants out of me. Our doctors said I could be 100 percent in January, but I don’t want to come back in the thick of the ACC schedule and have a tough time adjusting to college ball. If I tried to play right now, I couldn’t produce the way I want to, and that would hold me back from being the best player I could possibly be.”

Speaking of Injuries... Sophomore guard Devin Coleman, one of Clemson’s best players at the end of the 2011-12 season, suffered a torn Achilles tendon during a conditioning drill. He is expected to miss anywhere from 6-8 months of action and, like Blossomgame, will red-shirt the 2012-13 season. Coleman averaged 6.8 points per game over Clemson’s final eight contests of his freshman season, which included a team-high 15-point performance in the ACC Tournament against Virginia Tech.

Clemson 16-1 Under Brad Brownell When Holding Opponents to 50 or Less In Brad Brownell’s first season, Clemson held seven opponents to 50 points or less and compiled a 6-1 record in those games. The only team to defeat the Tigers when scoring less than 50 points was Virginia, who won 49-47 on Feb. 2, 2011. Clemson held five ACC schools to 50 or less in his first season, including three straight from Jan. 25 through Feb. 2, 2011. In comparison, Clemson held a total of eight teams to 50 or less in the two seasons prior to Brownell’s arrival, 2008-09 and 2009-10. In 2011-12, Brownell’s second season, the Tigers held seven opponents to 50 points or less. Not surprisingly, the Tigers won all seven games in that scenario, including a 56-37 dismantling of Georgia Tech at Philips Arena. The 2012-13 team got off to a good start by allowing only 44 points to Presbyterian in its season-opening victory. The Tigers followed with back-to-back games holding UTEP and Marist to under 50 in the Old Spice tournament. Clemson is 16-1 under Brownell when holding opponents to 50 or less.

Tigers Picked 8th in ACC by Coaches, Media Clemson was picked to finish in eighth place in the ACC by both the head coaches and media prior to the 2012-13 season. For the first time ever, the ACC head coaches predicted the order of finish and voted on preseason individual honors as well. NC State was the overwhelming choice for first place by both, while Wolfpack standouts C.J. Leslie and Rodney Purvis were named ACC Preseason Player and Rookie of the Year, respectively, by both the coaches and media. In the coaches poll, Duke was picked second, followed by North Carolina. Miami and Florida State rounded out the top five. The only difference in the media’s top five was a flip-flop with Florida State in fourth and Miami fifth. This is the lowest Clemson has been predicted to finish since the Tigers were tabbed ninth going into the 2006-07 season. Clemson was picked seventh or higher from 2007-08 through the 2011-12 season.

Clemson Tabbed for 2013 Charleston Classic Clemson will take part in the 2013 Charleston Classic presented by Foster Grant, ESPN Regional Television announced in November. Clemson is one of six schools confirmed for the event that will be held at College of Charleston’s TD Arena next November. The other schools committed to playing are UAB, Georgia, Nebraska, New Mexico and Temple. The exact dates of the tournament, as well as the final two participating teams, will be announced at a later date. The 2013 Charleston Classic presented by Foster Grant will be a bracket-format tournament, featuring 12 games over the three days of competition. The Southern Conference will again serve as the event’s sponsoring conference, marking the sixth straight year. Clemson won the inaugural Charleston Classic in 2008 when Oliver Purnell was still the Tigers’ head coach. The Tigers defeated Hofstra, TCU and Temple in order on their way to winning the championship. Trevor Booker was named Tournament MVP after posting 15 points and 16 rebounds in the final game against Temple. Other past winners of the Charleston Classic are Miami (FL) (2009), Georgetown (2010) and Northwestern (2011). This year’s champion will be crowned on Sunday, Nov. 18. CLEMSON vs. COASTAL CAROLINAAjukwa, Rooks Sign National Letters-of-Intent with Clemson Austin Ajukwa and Patrick Rooks signed National Letters-of-Intent with Clemson on Nov. 14, the first day of the early signing period. Head Coach Brad Brownell made the announcement Wednesday morning that Ajukwa, a 6-foot-6 wing from Columbia, SC, and Rooks, a 6-foot-3 guard from Charlotte, NC, would be joining the Tiger program in 2013. “We feel really good about the signing of Austin and Patrick,” Brownell said. “We’ve tracked them the last couple of years, and both players can really score the basketball. Both are good students and come from great families, and we’re excited to have them at Clemson.” Ajukwa, who plays for Cardinal Newman School, is a three-star prospect according to both ESPNU and Rivals.com. The athletic wing is rated the No. 2 senior prospect in the state of South Carolina by ESPNU, and the nation’s No. 30 prospect at his position according to the same service. He has been an all-state selection the past two seasons by the High School Sports Report. Ajukwa was named the 2011-12 Statewide SCISA Player-of-the-Year by the same publication after averaging 21 points per game. He added 9.0 rebounds per game and 2.5 steals per game defensively. Ajukwa played with the South Carolina Elite on the AAU circuit. “Austin is an athletic wing that can play a variety of positions,” Brownell said. “He had a very good junior year, followed by an outstanding summer. He will be a very good player at Clemson because he can do a lot of different things on the court. He has an ability to create his own shot, and can use his athleticism to make difficult shots at times.” Rooks is listed as a three-star prospect by ESPNU, Rivals.com and Scout.com. He is rated the No. 7 prospect in the state of North Carolina by ESPNU, and No. 31 overall at his position. Rooks has led Charlotte Christian School to three consecutive conference crowns and a state runner-up finish in 2010-11 when he teamed with current Virginia Cavalier forward Anthony Gill. Rooks has been an all-conference selection each of the last two seasons. In 2011-12, he averaged 14 points per game and shot 37 percent from three-point range. Rooks was a member of Team Loaded, a Virginia-based AAU team that won the prestigious Las Vegas FAB 48 Tournament this past summer. Rooks comes from an athletic family. His mother, Velda, was a track athlete at Appalachian State University and his father, Steven, played basketball at nearby Southern Wesleyan. His mother earned a master’s degree from Clemson. “Patrick is an outstanding shooter with a quick release and deep range,” Brownell said. “He will help us stretch defenses, and will play with the scoring mentality that you need from a few guys on your team. He’s a good pull-up jump shooter. He is a young man who has followed this program for several years and always wanted to wear orange. That is exciting to me.”
