Affiliated with the Khalid Shoman Foundation for the Arts, Darat Al Funun’s grounds encompass three historic buildings dating back to the 1920s and the remains of a sixth century Byzantine church, built over a Roman temple. They also provide spaces for workshops, a specialized art library and venues for the performing arts. The Lab, an experimental space and a hub for artists and researchers, holds the digitalized archives of Darat Al Funun. A whole range of events are organized outdoors, such as concerts, readings and film screenings. Make sure to enjoy the architecture of the villa itself, with its traditional front balcony and beautiful patterned-tile floors. Lectures, film screenings and artist talks are offered on Tuesdays at 6:30pm and are open to the public - click on “Tuesdays at the Darat” on their website for upcoming programs. Duinde Gallery/ Salam Kanaan Gallery

This homey gallery and cafe has a vibrant, youthful buzz. Located on Rainbow Street, it is a great meeting place. Salam Kanaan originally used this building as his own private gallery, with his atelier downstairs. The Duke’s Diwan

The Diwan is one of downtown’s oldest well-preserved stone houses. Built in 1924 by the late Abdel Rahman Madi, it used to be leased to the government and used as the Central Post Office. Then in 1948 and for the next fifty years, it became the venue of Haifa Hotel.

In 2001 Mamdouh Bisharat, “the Duke of Mukhaibeh” – a title bestowed upon him by the Late King Hussein in recognition of his services to the community – leased the house from the Madi family and decided to look after it and open it up to visitors. He wanted it to be a place that brings together heritage, culture, and art, and stand as a reminder of Amman’s beautiful authenticity. He keeps old books, magazines, and photographs. The place is also used for exhibitions, book signings, and other cultural gatherings, and is open to anyone who would like to go, sit, and have a good conversation

Orfali Gallery

Orfali Gallery is one of Amman’s progressive and artistically exciting contemporary art spaces. The founder of the gallery is the late Inaam Orfali who left Iraq and came to Jordan in 1955, one of the first Iraqis to move to Jordan at that time. Selective in its choice of artists, year after year, the gallery has accumulated serious works and masterpieces for artists from Jordan, Iraq, and other Arab countries. Orfali also makes use of its beautiful garden to host outdoor lectures, musical and poetry events, in addition to showing films and documentaries related to art. In 1997 Inaam Orfali, despite her illness, decided to expand the gallery space into a highly successful center that hosts educational and training workshop functions. Inaam Orfali’s vision and philosophy was to create an environment that is non-intimidating and visually stimulating. Care is a key factor in hosting exhibitions, and this has given the gallery a warm, friendly and personal ambiance.
