Hilda Elvira ROGERS (nee Haebich)

26 SEPTEMBER 1912 – 23 JULY 2015 GARDEN WAS HILDA'S GREAT PRIDE

FAREWELL TO A CARING MATRIARCH

When JJ and Veronika Gallasch migrated, they brought two children with them. Nearly 9 months after landing, Veronika gave birth (on 6

th

October 1840) to her fifth child, Anna Mathilde, the first Gallasch descendant to be born in Australia (GofGpg33+124) and (FS2Ppg23+118). At the age of 21 Anna Mathilde married Johann George Haebich, son of the Hahndorf blacksmith of the same name. They were blessed with nine children, and Hilda Elvira was the fifth child of their fifth child. (GofGpg139)(FS2Ppg23+129 say Anna Mathilde was sixth child because a little more information has been found. The spelling of her mother’s name also changes, as does the spelling of the boat in which they migrated.) Anna Mathilde and Johann George Haebich are buried together at the Woorak Cemetery. (Nth/east of Nhill, Vic.)

You may have read about Hilda Rogers’ aunt, Ida Alvina Tyschsen, maybe in a Gallasch newsletter? If so, could you please let the editor know where!

Many stories from Mrs Rogers’ life have been written (and read out at her funeral) by her daughter Janice Merrett. They were also published in The Wimmera Mail-Times on 16

th October 2015.

You will be able to find the full article in our website.

One such story was about how the newly married Hilda and her new husband (Laurie Rogers) overcame quite some obstacles before settling in their own home. Other highlights describe life in days gone by, and it is important to cherish these memories, and learn from them. Mosquitoes are mentioned in more than one story!

Places in the stories range around Victoria from Tungamah, to Nhill and Kaniva, where she lived most of her life, and was laid to rest in Peace Perfect Peace. Well earned, two months before her 103

rd birthday.

Mrs Rogers was very helpful in the community around her, and her family appreciated her nurturing roles at home, saying, “Goodbye to a caring mum. We are grateful that we had you for so long. We will miss you.”

Hilda Rogers is buried with her husband, Laurie Rogers in the Kaniva Cemetery.

2019 CELEBRATION AT THE PINES, 180 YEARS LUNCHEON

On a cloudy Sunday afternoon, 29 September 2019, friends, family and descendants of JJ Gallasch met at The Pines, Beaumont Rd., Verdun. There was excitement in the air as the cars rolled down the driveway, past the old Homestead and gathering of people seated under the shade of the Quercus Robur Oak tree planted in 1898 by EA Gallasch. Relatives who hadn’t crossed paths for a number of years engaged in excited conversations and remarked

at the way the old Oak tree had suddenly, in January 2016, unexpectedly revealed the bell hidden for decades within the dense growth of a large limb. Ron and Verity Hall cooked up a BBQ feast in the shadows of sheds with original shingle rooves whilst all attending supplied a variety of salads and decadent baked desserts.

After Greg Francis (Gallasch Reunion Committee Chair) brought the Annual General Meeting and formal proceedings of the afternoon to a close, he read out important parts of our history, reflecting our 180th anniversary year. The sun then shone brightly on the afternoon’s entertainment; a collection of stories and expose of unknown talents and diverse skills from those within our family tree. First Tony Gallasch told stories of his childhood life at The Pines and exhibited an old-world alternative for electric lights once used in the Homestead. Coral Gallasch reminisced of her time singing Verdi’s Requiem with the World Festival Choir and Luciano Pavarotti in 1994 and shared an update on the declining health of daughter Amy Gallasch due to BPAN disease. We observed the artistic talents of Rosalind Gallasch and Angela Beauchamp through lead lighting and painting and John Schultz with the repurposing of common shed

items and nuts and bolts into spiritual ornaments. Benjamin Gallasch showcased a number of published children’s books authored by wife Carrie Gallasch. Harold Gallasch enlightened us on the publication of his book on PNG and Maryn Schultz

presented to us a selection of knitted soft toys from the approximate 900 she had crafted for the vulnerable and sick over recent years. The highlight for all, both young and old, was Michael Hall’s collection of specialty breed and prize-winning poultry. We learnt Michael and Ron Hall were Show Champion Poultry breeders and Michael a respected National Poultry Judge. Little did we know that the young chicks, chirping and flapping their fledgling wings would bring together all generations present and reveal shared joy under the old Oak tree. Sonya Evans

THANKS to all who organised this event – especially those who provided environmentally friendly plates and cutlery! You may find Greg Francis’ historical welcome on our web-site sometime in the future! Ed.

THANKS to Sonya Gallasch Evans for this pic…

UN-BELL-LEAVE-ABLE OR UN-BELL-LEAF-ABLE?! HERE IT IS!

Either way, the story of the much loved oak tree is also securely intertwined with the story of the ancient family bell, once again in view, due to storm damage early in 2016. Tony and Coral are thinking about the best way to preserve it. Tree pics on our Facebook page, from Sept.2019.

L-R Fran Trautwein, Kathryn Zeppel, Johanna Trautwein, Janet Steicke, and Michelle Lethbridge on The Pioneer Walk at Eagle on the Hill, about to hike down to Beaumont in the footsteps of our pioneers on 19 May 2019, celebrating 180 years of Gallasches in Australia.

INTRODUCING YOUR NEW EDITOR Well here we are, on the other side! Eternity was, is, and always will be! Following on from Jason’s (farewell article and) editorship, what large metaphoric shoes to fill, he did such a fine job, despite so many difficulties, which continue. Even though this life on Earth seems such a big deal, it is tiny compared to Eternity. Eternity has no beginning or end, it is here … already! …already started! …here now! EterNITY is not EterTINY! Please keep yourselves as safe as possible ... forever … That’s why I’m passionate about recycling, reusing, refusing to waste etc. For the short time I was at the 180 years re-union, the choices made for the good of the environment warmed my heart, so thanks to those who went the extra mile so that we could minimize our footprints. Part of that is showing our appreciation for our blessings by looking after them, and making the most we can out of them, for the common good, in the longest lasting ways possible. I also love teamwork, and feedback, so feel free to contact me, or our secreTerry, as on our back page. The last time I looked right down the bottom of the news archive of our website there was an article beginning “Have you ever shared a birthday?” filed somehow under an irrelevant date (01-01-1970) which I wrote in mid 2019. Reading that will help you get to know me more! A photo connected to that article is included here. To help me get up to speed, could someone please send me a list of contents of newsletters not on our web-site? I hope that my editorship of this newsletter will help all Gallasch descendants to celebrate our common heritage. If we all record what we know as true now, it will help others in the future. Fran Trautwein.

2020 EVENT – yet to be announced – Please send in your best clean jokes! ...then find them on Facebook! ...and have a laugh!

with thanks to fundraisers and everyone who helped.

Their grave is now as smart as Johann Joseph Gallasch’s, already restored.
