Senior School NewsMick Grogan - Senior School Director

Year 12 students began the year for-mally at the Wangaratta Performing Arts Centre, with their annual Year 12 Jumper and Award Presentation evening, last Wednesday.

Hayden Sharp (Caveman, Farmer, Footballer, Radiologist and Commu-nity person) a former Galen School Captain from 1993, as special guest speaker delivered a very enter-taining and engaging speech. His delivery was underpinned by the themes of; being organized, being interested and curious, working hard to achieve success, contributing positively to local community, being an active parent, and seizing all opportunities.

Students were also encouraged by School Leaders to focus on the importance of supporting one another on their journey throughout the year.

Prior to the presentation of the jumpers, the VCE academic awards for 2016 were presented, including the Dux for 2016, which went to Ian Christy. A special bursary was also presented to Ian, to support his studies at The University of Melbourne. Congratulations are extended to Ian.

Additionally, awards from the Wangaratta Art Gallery Friends Incorporated were presented by Sandy Wingate, the Treasurer. Daina Sgarioto received an Award for the most outstanding student in year 12 Visual Art, and Briellen Ramsay was awarded an encouragement award for being a deserving student.

The Charles Sturt University Award for a student who shows great perseverance with their studies and a capacity for further study was won by Rebecca Hawkins. The Latrobe University Award for a student in recognition of active contribution to the life of the school community through social justice was received by Jazmyn Coonan. College Captains and Vice-Captains for 2017, were also officially announced. Successful candidates Jack Larkin, India Dal Zotto, Josh Bevacqua and Emma Gamble feel very honoured to be given the opportunity to represent Galen College as student leaders this year.

The start to the year has been terrific. Year 12 Students have been keen to embrace their studies and are looking forward to their retreat.

Jess Lewis from Year 11 was nominated for Lion’s Youth of The Year at a Club level. Congratulations to Jess for being runner up.

Socks must be white. Hats should be carried at all times during recess and lunchtimes. When in the sun students are required to be wearing their hat. When in the shade they do not have to be wearing their hat.Punctuality has also been very good. Remember that first bell goes at 8.45am and HR commences at 8.50am.

Social Justice at GALEN 2017 What’s involved?

Illoura – Volunteer students from Years 7 –12 are trained through NE Health to assist staff at Illoura Aged Care facility on a daily basis. There are currently 40 students from Galen who participate in this successful Meal Buddy program.

Caritas’ Project Comapssion: In 2017 the theme is ‘Love Your Neighbour’. Galen Junior students will host a Relay Walk For Water, where students raise money for the distance they walk, at the same time putting themselves in someone else’s shoes for a day; someone else who may have to walk many kilometres just to get fresh water for drinking and basic hygiene needs for their family, or walk to sell harvested crops at market for a minimal income.

Middle and Senior students will run the launch of Project Compassion which will be held on Sherove Tuesday. VCAL students will cook and sell pancakes whilst our senior students will provide music entertainment during recess and lunch. Middle school students will assist with food and activity stalls on our school Athletics Day in early Term 2.

Justice Matters Camp – Students SJ Leaders from Years 10 participate in the Sandhurst Diocese Justice Matters Camp. The camp is an annual event that is run by Caritas Australia. Students learn about global poverty and other justice issues.

Just Leadership Day - Student SJ leaders from Years 7 &

8 attend the Just Leadership Day which is organized by Caritas. Students from all over the Sandhurst Diocese join together to learn about global justice issues and how they can create awareness within their communities.

Vinnie’s Winter Sleepout – Social Justice group students organise a Winter Sleepout in the school’s stadium and around the school grounds. Students from all Year levels are encouraged to participate. The evening includes the students sharing in soup and bread and listening to guest speakers from a range of different services who help support the Homeless.

Zonta Birthing Kits – Galen’s Social Justice Group in conjunction with Wangaratta’s Zonta group, raised money for the supplies for 200 birthing kits in 2016 and packed them, as part of Zonta’s International Birthing Kit Program. These kits have significantly reduced the mother and child mortality rates in developing countries.

Diocesan Winter Sleepout – A small group of students participate in the Winter Sleepout for the Diocese early in Term 3. Students met up with others from the Diocese (including school students in Wodonga, Shepparton and Bendigo), at this event they listen to guest speakers, and experienced a cold night sleeping out in the elements.

Vinnie’s Winter Appeal – The whole school participates in raising awareness, money, donating blankets and non-perishables for the Vinnie’s Winter Appeal.

Young Vinnies Conference – we sent a contingency of Social Justice students to Melbourne to attend the Young Vinnie’s Conference. Students learn about homelessness and the issues surrounding this topic in the community. Students then bring their experiences back to Galen to create awareness within the local community.

Santa Teresa Immersion – 8 students and 3 staff members travel to Santa Teresa (Ltyentye Apurte) an Aboriginal Community 80kms east of Alice Springs. Students from Galen go on the invitation of the Marist Brothers, who run the Santa Teresa primary school, as well as skill-based programs for local youth (Year 10 & 11 students can apply).

Timor-Leste Immersion – 8 students and 3 staff members travel to Timor to immerse themselves in the Timorese culture and lifestyle by spending time living in the township of Baucau, Dili and Abafala. They have the chance to teach English in the schools, play with the Timorese students, visit the remote village of Abafala and experience life in Timor Leste (Year 10 & 11 students can apply).

Look out for information in the school bulletin. Access application forms via SIMON.

Vinnies Just Art – is an opportunity for budding young artists to produce work around a current social justice issue. In 2016 the theme was Asylum Seekers – Stories of Humanity. Keep a close look out for further information and theme for 2017.

See bulletin notices for events and fundraisers throughout the year.

April School Holiday Program

Volunteer Co-ordinator: Brooke Boede—0418 166 501 / [email protected]

Looking for something fun to do in the school holidays?

How about volunteering with Interchange to help provide fun and positive

experiences for kids with disability? Contact Interchange to find out more!

Out & About days are held four days each week in the school holidays. Groups (8-12) of school aged children enjoy activities with the support of staff and volunteers. Activities include visits to amusement centres, parks, swimming areas, libraries, museums and day trips to other towns.

Centre Based days are held two days each week in the school holidays. These groups are for pre-school aged children and children with additional support needs. The group en-joys a range of activities including sensory play, music and games. This is a great program to work with younger children.

Camps are held during the school holidays and can be from one over night stay to several nights away at camp. Activities are camp and community based.
