Welcome back. The Staff at
Gainsborough would like to
wish each and everyone of you
a very Happy New Year. After a
restful and enjoyable holiday
with family and friends, we are
looking forward to a very
productive term.
In December we had a very
busy month preparing for our
wonderful Christmas Concert.
For those of you who had the
opportunity to take in this great
performance, thank you for the
positive feedback.

While we feel it is
important for students to
spend time outdoors during
our fitness breaks, there
may be occasions when
wind chills, particularly in
our open fields, necessitate
a decision to keep the
children indoors for part or
all of the break. On those
days when it isn’t quite
cold enough to keep
them indoors, it is
important that students
are dressed appropriately
for the weather, with
layers of clothing , warm
coats, socks, boots, hats
and gloves or mittens. It
i s a l s o h e l p f u l ,
particularly in the primary
grades, that these items
are marked with your
child’s name.

Mission Statement:
“Gainsborough Central Public School strives for each child to live, learn, and laugh in a safe, unique, and challenging environment. Each child is encouraged to achieve personal standards of excellence in the school community.”
❆Winter weather usually brings lots of opportunities for fun in the snow, however, it can also bring danger when
students don’t play in a careful way. Snowballs, can especially cause serious injury. Therefore, we have a NO
THROW SNOW policy.
❆The climbing equipment will also be off-limits to students during snowy and/or icy weather as boots, snow pants
and gloves or mittens make it difficult to get a good footing or grasp when climbing. It is also important that
drawstrings, which could become caught in the equipment, are removed.
❆Please make sure your child comes to school dressed warmly on cold days since the wind can be harsh as it
blows across our open playground. A pair of shoes to wear in the building when boots are removed is also a
necessity. It is also a good idea to send an extra pair of mittens/gloves and socks (labeled with your child’s name)
in case these get wet during first break and haven’t dried sufficiently to second break.

✬The flu and cold season is here! One
way to help control the spread of germs
is to educate our youngsters about the
importance of coughing into their sleeve
rather than their hands and to wash their
hands frequently, especially if they have
the sniffles.
✬Not sure when to send your child to
school if he/she isn’t feeling well? We
appreciate the desire to not miss school,
but for the sake of the healthy children we
ask that students with bad coughs, sore
throats and flu (i.e. fever, diarrhea) stay
at home. A good rule of thumb is that if
you think your child is not well enough to
go outside during breaks, then he/she
should probably not be at school. We do
not have facilities or staff available to
supervise students who are ill.
Just a reminder that Friday, January 15th is a professional activity day and
there will not be classes for students that day.
Happy New Year! Parent Council would like to welcome you back after the holiday! We hope it was a time to rest and relax with family and friends. Thank you to everyone who donated baskets for our raffle at the Christmas concert, you helped to make it a success! We bid a fond farewell to Mrs. Bering, as she moves on to another school. We'll miss her bright smile and gentleness, but wish her the best of luck in her new position! Thank you, Mrs. Bering, for being so kind, and such a dedicated worker. You'll truly be missed! A warm welcome to Mrs. Lee Wilson! We hope you feel right at home here, we're happy to have you! Our next parent council meeting is Thursday January 21 at 7pm at the school, childcare will be provided. If you're considering joining us, we'd love to have you as part of the team! There are also plenty of volunteer opportunities at the school. Please email Julie Adams ([email protected]).

MARCH BREAK

March 18, 2016
Looking for gardening volunteers Our beautiful birch trees in the front flowerbed had sent roots to the drainage pipes and we had to have them removed in early Decem-ber. This was unexpected and there wasn’t time to rescue the plants that were in that flowerbed.
We are looking for some gardening volunteers in the spring who would be able to assist us in donating some plant materials and help to plant them.
If you can offer your assistance please speak with Mr. Osmond, 905-386-6223 ext. 32901. Thank you!
Our winter Little Caesar’s Pizza Kit fundraiser will begin
just in time to ensure delivery for Superbowl 50 (or to help
with the hockey night dinner doldrums)! Order forms will
be going home this week and are due back Thursday,
January 21, 2016. Pickup will be Tuesday February 2,
2016 between 2:30 and 5:00 (please mark your calen-
dars)! Money raised through this program will be used to
support the school and your children in various ways
(recent support initiatives include funding Scientists in the
Classroom, new materials for the Forest of Reading pro-
gram, and assistance with purchasing new laptops and
robotics!). We are asking that every family tries to sell 5 kits
to help us reach our goal. As always though, participation is
100% voluntary. We thank each and every one of you for your
continued support!
Immunization Record Review:
Is Your Child’s Vaccination Record Up to Date?
The Immunization of School Pupils Act (ISPA), Amending Reg. 645 of R.R.O. 1990, requires Public Health to collect and maintain immunization records for all school-aged children in Niagara. At the beginning of December 2015, letters were mailed to parents/legal guardians of elemen-tary and secondary school students who have incom-plete immunization records on file at Public Health. If you received this Immunization Notice in the mail (blue form) please ensure that you provide the required immunization infor-mation to Public Health in order to avoid suspension from school. Suspension will take effect in May 2016. If you have any questions or concerns, we encourage you to call the Vaccine Preventable Dis-ease program at 1-888-505-6074 or 905-688-8248 ext. 7425 Mon-day to Friday 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
