Development cooperation partners are beginning to act

Studies reveal that the climate risks being faced by development programmes are substantial.

10

The World Bank estimates that at least 25 percent of its investments are exposed to significant climate change risks (picture to the right).

OECD reports that for certain countries up to 65 percent of Official Development Assistance (ODA) might be negatively affected.

Estimates for required additional funding to help developing countries to cope with and adapt to climate change range between below 10 billion USD to over 100 billion USD annually. Funding sources are only beginning to be identified, channels operationalized and concrete adaptation measures being implemented.

Climate mainstreaming is not only about climate mitigation and adaptation

12

How to reach climate compatible development (approach and tools, as proposed by CDKN)

Internationally an urgent need for lessons learned and success stories from fore-runners !

A number of mainstreaming approaches are being developed and piloted by international stakeholders.

Concluding remarks

There is an obvious need for scientific community to better communicate the results o The uncertainties and multiple interconnections have to be acknowledged but should not serve as

reason fore inaction

There is a continued need for awareness raising and strengthening/harnessing civil society as

well as build capacities of relevant institutions o Not the job of one institution, ministry, administrative level, public or private sector

There is need for economy wide approaches with inclusive and green/sustainable growth

o Costs and benefits of action and inaction must be produced to ensure political level dears to move – political leadership absolutely necessary

o Co-benefits and synergies exist and must be harnessed BUT trade-offs also recognized

A number of climate mainstreaming approaches and tools available

o Tailor for your organization and use them - share responsibilities wisely

A minimum requirement for the development / ODA partners

o Put your own houses into order and contribute to the mainstreaming of other stakeholders ´action in collaboration with developing country partners
