Gabriel Wasserman 15 Elul 5778 / 26 August 2018 Here I have assembled images and transcriptions of the manuscripts of She‘arekha that I have examined. All these manuscripts were found in the Cairo Geniza. Most of the manuscripts have essentially the same text; this text accords neither with the Vilna Karaite Siddur nor with the version on Piyut.org. The copy of the Venice Karaite Siddur that I have been using at the National Library of Israel is missing the first few pages. Therefore, we do not know whether She‘arekha was included in it at all; and if so, how the text read. There is another copy, of restricted access, at the Library, but so far I have not been able to get my hands on it. Here are the manuscripts. Differences here: At the end of the second line, instead of החקל , “take”, we have החנמו , “and a grain-offering”. In the last line, we have here הענכ , “is humbled”, in the qal conjugation rather than the nif‘al; the meaning is the same – and, moreover, it is possible that this manuscript, too, originally read

הענכנ , in the nif‘al, because there is enough space in the manuscript for a nun. If so, not a trace survives of the letter. I have transcribed the last surviving letter of the poem in this manuscript as resh, simply because that is what the surviving strokes look like; however, it is likely that originally it was a shin, and the word read החשו , as in other manuscripts.

Two notable features here: (1) the indication זפ' , meaning pizmon, “refrain”, after each line (except the last); presumably this means to repeat the

first line as a refrain after each line. (2) Instead of הצר , “accept”, it has רוצנ , “protect, guard” (a synonym of רומש later in the line).

1. Similar text to what survives of T-S NS 299.107. 2. All the lines survive in this version. The text in the second half of the first line differs

from what we have seen so far; it reads: “And to the poor person asking in front of you – grant forgiveness”. The line does not scan in the poem’s meter, and is certainly not original.

3. The second half of the third line reads: החלס הי ךינפל רשא םאו . This, too, does not scan in the poem’s meter. Moroever, what we have transcribed as רשא is cut off at the end, and perhaps originally read הגשא “I err”, as in the other texts. The reading רשא makes no sense here.
