n NORTH CAROLINA MINUTE

By J. C. Knowles

This story come to us from Carole Pelosi, Publisher of the Wake Forest Gazette

A few weeks ago I said something about gold around here, and at least one reader said he had never heard about that. Well, it is true that the North Carolina gold rush began well to the west around Charlotte- from 1804 to 1828 all domestic gold coined by the United States Mint came from North Carolina- but it moved to Franklin and Nash counties in 1838.

A man called Isaac Portis farmed near two roads up in the northeast comer of Franklin County in that year, and he offered beds and breakfast to travelers. One of those was outside early in the morning, contemplating either the freshly-plowed field or the mud chinking for the cabin, depending on the version, and saw gold. Portis, no fool, sent samples off to Richmond and Raleigh and got confirmation.

The area around the farm in the Ransome Bridge area soon became as wild and brawling as any frontier. There were gunfights and shoot-outs. The most famous, at least in legend, happened one Saturday night in a saloon, leaving 14 men dead. The story is probably remembered because each one came from a different state and they were buried in the shape of the Union.

Mining camps sprang up on the Portis property, and Isaac Portis charged each prospector a portion of his find. He also hired others to work his placer mines. He fiercely defended his property with a large pistol, and he was a wealthy man by the time the Civil War put an end to the mining.

With the Portis find, others began looking, and they found it in Nash, Halifax and Warren counties, where most of the mining was underground.

After the war, Union Colonel William Sturges purchased the Portis property and operated the mine successfully until his death in 1894. One of his sons, Phil, continued to operate the mine until he sold it in 1935 to the Norlina Company out of Lansing, Michigan. That company brought in a lot of heavy equipment but never was able to find the mother lode. The company abandoned the attempt in 1936.

According to Franklin County historian T.E. Pearce, there was a final attempt to mine the Portis gold. "In February of 1938 a gold extracting plant was set up in the J.S. Howell building on South Main Street in Louisburg. R.W. Stoddard, described as an expert mining engineer, in connection with the state geologist, Dr. Herman J. Bryson, who installed the plant, said that they were satisfied there was a lot of gold in the county and preliminary tests run on clay brought from the Portis mine property showed an assay value of $15 per ton. They did find gold but it was reported that it cost them $3 to extract $2 worth of gold so the gold extracting plant soon closed its doors."

At one time, Franklin County remembered its heritage with the name Gold Sand given to both a township and a school, but the school is closed and the township renamed. Now the only noise around Wood is the sign of the wind through the pines.

Family History Conference 2009 National Genealogy Society

The Building of a Nation - From Roanoke to the West By Linda A. Perdue

The 2009 National Genealogy Society Family History conference was in Raleigh, North Carolina May 13th thru the 16th . The local host was the North Carolina Genealogical Society. As my fust National Genealogy conference approached, I began to wonder -What would it be like to dedicate 4 days of time and absorb as much information as I possibly could about one of my favorite pastimes? After all, this is a big event! Over 1,000 people were descending on the City of Raleigh to attend this event!

My friend and I arrived downtown at the Raleigh Marriot City Center next to the Convention Center late Tuesday afternoon. I checked in fast, and quickly ran over to the registration desk for the conference before it closed at 6pm, I had 20 minutes. The longest line was for the letters which my name belonged - would I make it? Yes! The process was very well organized and without issue, I checked in, got the conference schedule and had my packet of items for the next several days.

My goal was to try sessions in most of the areas. I will however admit, I did not attend any sessions in the Gen Tech track, primarily because I have worked with computers for the last 25 years professionally and many of these sessions were "computer centric". There are many different sessions at each time slot, so selection and choice played a good part of each day. Selection is based on each persons experience or perhaps on whom the speaker is for a given session. It helps to pre-plan before you arrive for the conference. Review the schedule the night before or the morning of the conference.

The conference is broken into several different areas or "tracks" of presentations. They were:

• BCG Skill building • Migration • The Carolinas • Ethnic • Working with Records • State • Methodology • Gen Tech • Workshops

I quickly learned that if the sessions started at 8am, and you wanted a good seat you need to be there by close to 7:30. The feature speaker for the first session was Ira David Wood, III. As he began to speak, I wondered - What the relevance of his speech would be? Before long I realized it didn't matter - he was a great speaker and I was laughing quite a bit as he entertained us talking about his life. The conference was off to a good start. Some sessions were more popular than others.

Many of us are familiar with some of the speakers. Now came my opportunity to meet (or at least see) some of them! If you do research in North Carolina and you are unfamiliar with Helen Leary - this was a great opportunity to listen and learn from her. She is known to many as the genealogy authority in North Carolina. If you do research in Louisiana, particularly the Natchitoches area - or you are familiar with several books related to Evidence and citing sources - then you've heard of Elizabeth Shown Mills. Other speakers I listened to and eajoyed included Thomas W. Jones and A. B. Prutt. There are too many to name. Most of the sessions I attended were very good. Some were thought provoking, others reassuring (hey, I do know something after all!). As the day grew towards the late afternoon, I quickly realized that I was getting to my saturation point and I could actually get "to much genealogy in a single day". Sessions on the first day ran until 8pm or so. I needed a break, so my day of genealogy ended at 5pm.

A workshop began my second day of the conference. These are small classroom sessions that have a separate fee in order to attend. My workshop was "From Dockets to Documents: Papers Created for Courts" presented by Marty Hiatt. I really like this format and I recommend them to anyone that can spare the additional funds to attend. The workshop combined lecture and hands on providing for a nice learning experience. I finally had a chance to visit the exhibit hall on the second day. Many of the folks we all know - Ancestry.com, FamilySearch.com, Family Tree, book vendors, other software vendors and genealogy societies were all there, waiting to be visited . Through out the next three days I walked around and talked with vendors and learned about different things related to genealogy. I signed up for the drawings given by many of the vendors (I didn't win anything, but someone did).

As the second half of the conference began, my time was divided between attending sessions for the conference and the State Archives located in downtown Raleigh. After attending several sessions, I learned more and my curiosity was aroused. I wanted to go find information on my relatives. Many of whom are from the North Carolina area. In the archives I found a Supreme Court case that my relatives were involved in. I also discovered original wills that date back to the early 1800's and a lot of other information. I happily gave the clerks money to make copies. Wow, I have so much to review when I get home.

After 4 long days, the conference was now over. I learned a lot - but most importantly I now know what a ''National" level genealogy conference is all about from the viewpoint of attending. Will I do this again? Probably. There are some advantages to attending a conference in a location where you have relatives and are able to do research at the same time.

Happy Hunting!

QUERY ? ? ? FROM NEW MEMBER

My name is Jon Wenzel. I live in Mariposa, California. I have been into genealogy for 13 years.lam a new member of NCGCGS.

My 6th. Great Grandfather was Martin Ring born 1735 somewhere near Granville, North Carolina. My Ring family is as follows: l. Augustin Ring was born March 19, 1838 in Surry County, North Carolina. He married Martha Jane Ashburn on January 6, 1866 in Surry County. Martha was born in 1847. Their marriage record number was I, 197. Their marriage bond number was 147, 128. Bondsman was Adorn, yes this spelling is correct, Ring. Augustin died on May 28, 1903 at 3:30 pm in Findley, Shelby County, lllinois. Augustin and Martha were my maternal Great Grandparents. 2. Thomas Jefferson Ring was born November 25, 1795 in Surry County, North Carolina. He married Nancy Nance on March 27, 1824 in Surry County. Nancy was horn in 1808 in Surry County. Their marriage bondsman was Samson Fleming. Thomas died on October 16, 1840. Augustin 1838 was their 5th. child. 3. Martin Ring was born in August l77L He married Celia, do not know her surname. Celia was born in August 1769. Thomas 1795 was their 3rd. child. 4. Martin Ring was born in 1735 somewhere near Granville, North Carolina Martin 1771 was his son. 5. Thomas Ring was born June 2, 1700 in England and died January 15, 1796. He married Margaret, do not know her surname. Margaret was horn on December l, 1710 and died on November l, 1805. Martin 1735 was their 5th child. Their 6th. child was Thomas Ring born December 1757 in Granville County, North Carolina

I do not know the birth dates or places of Thomas 1700 and Margaret l710's first four children. Martin born 1735 in Granville, North Carolina, for now, proves that the Thomas and Margaret Ring family came to America as late as 1757.

Does anyone know when the Thomas and Margaret Ring family came to America or anything about Martin Ring 1735? Thank you for your help. My email is [email protected]. Jon Wenzel, 5487 Gunther Road, Mariposa, CA 95338.

SOUTHERN CROSS OF HONOR Contributed by Mildred C. Goss

The Southern Cross of Honor was the concept of Mrs Alexander S. Erwin, who was the daughter of General Howell Cobb of Georgia. It was approved by the United Daughters of the Confederacy at their convention in Hot Springs, Arkansas in 1898. The fust recipient was Captain Alexander S. Erwin.

In recent research of the Southern Cross of Honor, the Granville Grays Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy located in Oxford, North Carolina has awarded some forty three of these to Granville County Confederate Soldiers according to information found in two old editions of the Oxford Ledger, a local newspaper on microfilm at the Thornton Library. It was exciting to find one of my great grandfathers name on the list. The following are the names of the soldiers who received these.

J. J. Allgood A. D. Williams J.P. Currin D. G. Crews William Harp W. H. White W. L. Robards T. H. Speed G. P. Stroud S. J. Currin John D. Williams Milton Blalock C. R. Thomasson Howard Dorsey J. P. Cannady S. C. Harris John B. Currin J.P. Mize Joshua Overton Spencer R. O'Briant W. B. Royster D. Y. Hunt C. F. Turner I. H. Stegall F.M.Moody J. L. Furgerson J. R. Buchanan J. B. Buchanan James E. Howard (survivor of the Merimac) W.F. Woody

The Southern Cross of Honor was given to these Confederate soldiers who served in the War Between the States by the United Daughters of the Confederacy.

The design is a Maltese Cross with a Confederate Battle Flag enclosed in a hero's wreath of laurel in the center of the obverse. The inscription, which is in the arms of the cross, is United -Daughters- Confederacy- to the-U. C. V. At the center of the reverse, enclosed in a laurel wreath, is Deo-Vindice- 1861-1865. (Deo-Vindice is translated as "God Favor the Cause" or "God our Vindicator." The inscription in the arms of the reverse is Southern-Cross-of-Honor. The Cross is suspended by a single link from a rectuangler bronze bar which has a recessed field in which the recipient's name was engraved. In the first seven years the Organization presented over 79,000 Crosses to Confederate Veterans.

May is Memorial Day Month

Let us remember It is the Soldier, not the reporter, who has given us the freedom of press. It is the Soldier, not the poet, who has given us freedom of speech. It is the Soldier, not the campus organizer, who has given us the freedom to demonstrate. It is the Soldier who salutes the flag, who serves beneath the flag, and whose coffin is draped by the flag, who allows the protestor to burn the flag.

0

Remember Freedom is not Free. It is the Soldier who gave it to us. Next time you see a soldier or ( a veteran, thank him for serving. \__,
