Setting MFD MAP
Display Orientation
For the Cross Track Flight Plan and Single Leg Methods, we want to set the MAP
display orientation to TRACK UP. The TRACK UP is the preferred choice for this
application, because when the cross track is changing magenta base flight plan leg
will tilt. If cross track is constant, the magenta base flight plan leg will be perfectly
vertical. It is important when doing visual search patterns to be able to determine
position and track in an instant, because the mission pilot’s priority is to look
outside the airplane. Most of the time you will find the MAP display in TRACK UP
orientation; however, there are pilots who prefer NORTH UP.
This presentation is, also, applicable setting the other MAP display orientations.
NORTH UP, DESIRED TRACK UP and HEADING UP are, also, available. TRACK UP
and DESIRED TRACK UP are similar; however, the magenta base flight plan leg
using DESIRED TRACK UP will not tilt when the Cross Track Distance (XTK) is
changing. When using DESIRED TRACK UP, the only visual cue one gets when the
Cross Track Distance (XTK) is changing is the airplane symbol is pointed right or
left. The magenta base flight plan leg remains vertical. The aircraft symbol tilting
in DESIRED TRACK UP is much smaller and less apparent than the magenta line
tilting in TRACK UP. Using the NORTH UP orientation the aircraft symbol is the
only visual cue on how the aircraft is tracking over the ground. Using HEADING
UP for the Cross Track Flight Plan Parallel Search Method would be very
confusing, because generally some wind correction is required causing the
magenta line to tilt, and the aircraft symbol pointed straight up.

The MFD is in NORTH UP orientation. We want the MFD in TRACK UP orientation.
Press the MENU Key to get Map Setup, and then press the ENTER key.
4
If the GROUP is not MAP, turn the inter FMS knob to get drop down list.
Turn Outer FMS knob to Map.
5
Press the ENTER key to get map choices.
The current map orientation is North Up. Turn the inner FMS knob to get map choices.
6
Turn Outer FMS knob to Track Up.
Press the ENTER key to change to Track Up.
7
Press the Inner FMS key to extinguish cursor, and drop MAP SETUP.
The MFD is now in TRACK UP orientation.
