Objectives

1. Participants will learn the structure of the North American

Grading systems and associations work (ALSC, CLSAB,

CWC, NLGA) Participants will learn how the monitoring

system works in Alberta (AFPA quality control

2. Participants will also learn how lumber is graded and the

appropriate uses of the different grades

3. Samples of lumber will also be brought in to illustrate the

different grades of lumber and participants will be invited to

grade the lumber themselves.

4. Appropriate uses for pine that has been killed by the

Mountain Pine Beetles will be discussed and how we can

best utilize our resources.

At the end of the this course,

CLSAB is the body that oversees the

performance of the Canadian lumber grading system.

CLSAB has four main roles: 1. Control the identification and certification of

lumber in Canada 2. Accredit and supervise lumber grading agencies 3. Review and approve grading rules and other

product standards related to grading agencies 4. Promote acceptance of Canadian lumber

grading system in foreign markets

The NLGA was incorporated in 1971.

Responsible for writing, interpreting and maintaining Canadian lumber grading rules and standards.

The rules are approved and enforced by CLSAB and ALSC – enables acceptance under Canadian and US building codes.

Canadian grading rules must meet the NGR.

The membership of NLGA consists of all the lumber manufacturers' associations and independent grading agencies in Canada.
