Ruan Minor Surgery‘Times are changing, look at everything that’s come and gone!’

A famous line from Bryan Adams’ Summer of 69 song that sums up so many of theCounty’s towns and villages. It’s Human nature to want to ‘progress’ and ‘evolve’but at what cost to the local community? Ruan Minor is a friendly village where thelocal residents not only support their neighbours and friends but equally supporttheir local school, shops, businesses, public transport, churches, village hall andtheir Doctors Surgery. As you are probably aware Ruan Minor surgery is part of a larger Group Practicecomprising of Mullion Health Centre, Constantine Surgery and Lizard Surgery.Three of the four sites have their own in-house dispensary where prescriptions areprovided from our Doctors for our patients. I’m sure you will agree this is a realasset to those villages. Providing prescribed medications to our patients ensuresthat the medication is up to date (i.e. current and accurate as per the Doctor’s latestinstructions). Prescriptions can be intercepted and changed if the Doctor makesamendments to the drugs or dosing. We are well stocked and have most com-monly prescribed medications on the shelf; however, if we don’t have a particularitem we will endeavour to obtain it within a few days. You may have received a leaflet in the post inviting you to get your repeatprescriptions from an online provider called Pharmacy2U. Pharmacy2U is not yourlocal Pharmacy and has nothing to do with local pharmacies and dispensingsurgeries. We feel you should be aware of some facts regarding Pharmacy2U.

● There is no face-to-face contact - they are only allowed to deal with patientsby post, or telephone.

● In 2015 Pharmacy2U was fined for selling its patients’ details. The Informa-tion Commissioners Office found that data was used to deliberately targetelderly and vulnerable patients.

● Over Christmas 2015, Pharmacy2U failed to send out prescriptions, leavingthousands of patients without their essential medicines.

● In 2017 the Care Quality Commission (CQC) inspected Pharmacy2U anddeemed it ‘not safe, effective or well led’. In comparison Mullion & Constan-tine Group Practice were recently awarded ‘Outstanding’ by the CQC andrated the top Surgery Group in Cornwall.

We urge you to continue to support us and allow us to care for you and your familyby ignoring requests from internet providers like Pharmacy2U and continuing toobtain your prescriptions from your local NHS Doctors Surgery Dispensary. Don’tlet us become another statistic of what there used to be in the villageThank you for taking the time to read this letter.Gael Cawley and and Katherine TresederMullion and Constantine Group Practice Dispensary.

Grade Ruan singers at The LizardLocal singers Angela Agutter-Thomas, Jane Edgerley, Alison Goldsack,Mark Outten and Pat Palmer can lay claim to participating in mainland UK’smost southerly candlelit Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols in 2018 whichtook place at St Wynwallow Church at Landewednack. (Sadly Sally Ellis wasunable to attend the service due to illness.)This is the fourth consecutive year that An Lysardh Christmas Choir, com-prising singers from across the Lizard Peninsula plus a few vocalists fromHelston, has come together with previous carol services being held atTrelowarren, Gunwalloe and Mawgan. An Lysardh, conducted and directedby Andrew Woods, has built up a reputation for its rendition of both traditionaland modern Christmas music, and St Wynwallow was full with the congrega-tion coming from as far as Penzance and Penryn. A particular highlight wasI sing of a maiden by Robin Wells which was both moving and magical tolisten to. The congregation joined in the traditional carols such as Once inroyal David’s city with Jacquie Griffiths singing the first verse solo. CharlotteMassey was the soloist in Of the Father’s heart begotten and the first verse

of I sing of a maiden. Ann Bradbury, organist at St Wynwallow, accompa-nied the choir both on the organ and keyboard as well as playing the flute. The church bells were rung before and after the service which was led by theReverend Peter Sharpe who also read one of the lessons, along withmembers of the choir including Alison Goldsack, and the congregationincluding Mike Lord representing The Bolenowe Animal Sanctuary. Acollection of over £300 was taken which is being shared equally betweenThe Bolenowe Animal Sanctuary and St Wynwallow Church. Following theservice, mulled wine and mince pies were served to the congregation.Andrew would like to thank all those people who kindly responded to his pleafor glass dishes to put tea lights in. Over 300 candles were used at StWynwallow. As the Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols service is proving so popular onthe Lizard, Andrew is already making plans for the 2019 service at a yet tobe revealed location!Andrew Woods

Battle recommenced a week early in December as Christmas Day was going to get in theway of our serious quizzing band. Six large teams took up arms and fought over nine roundsof Christmas based questions. Sally was delighted with her knowledge of 70’s heart throbDavid Soul and his singing of the hit Silver Lady! Mark was at the helm once again this monthand his off the cuff question on Jacob Marley’s birth date according to the Jim Carey versionof a Christmas Carol showed a depth of knowledge, if a little Geeky. The battle for the bestadorned table reached new heights with purpose made picnic baskets (which has sectionsfor 4 bottles of wine and 4 glasses - a hard night planned!) and fully decorated Christmastrees making an appearance. See the photos in the Hall. The results were as follows and thetrophy was on display in the shop for another month.

See you all on the fourth Tuesday of the month. There is always room for more if you are upto the challenge. If you have not got a team we will find you one. Most of the quizzers do notbite.David Endean

Recreation Ground News

That's Christmas andNew Year out of the way - lots to lookforward to and plan this year! Our "Anniversary" Party in December wasmoderately successful - numbers werelower than I would have liked, but high-lighted the need for us to be more activewith our publicity - two committee membershave taken that job on, so hopefully we willdo better from here on! We had a busyweekend before Christmas and anotherbetween Christmas and New Year, although we didn't open on Boxing Day - wedid open for a few hours early New YearEve - so that was quite a busy time for us inthe end! We've quite a busy programme of openingfor the next few months:● Yoga classes Monday, Tuesday and

Thursday from 6pm (contact Tanya on290931).

● Regular bar open every Friday from5pm until at least 7pm, with darts, cards and table tennis available.

● RMFC home matches on Saturdays(16th February is the only date I haveat the moment - look out for the black-board to let you know when there's agame!).

● Ladies darts matches on Wednesdays30th January, 6th and 27th February,6th and 27th March - bar open from7.30pm.

● Euchre match on Thursdays 31st

January (I think that's the last homematch) - bar open from 7.30pm.

● 6-Nations Rugby we will be open forevery game: Friday 1st , Saturday 2nd,Saturday 9th , Sunday 10th , Saturday23rd , Sunday 24th February, Saturday9th , Sunday 10th and Saturday 16th

March. We will open about half-hourbefore kick-off of the first match andclose about an hour after the lastmatch ends each day.

● If we get a repeat of last year'sweather - we will open on any "snowday", probably from 1pm to 7pm!

● And, of course, we are planning thisyear's May Festival, Friday 25th -Monday 28th May.

Whilst all that is going on, we are - at last! -proceeding with the next phase of thekitchen fitting out. Next week (as I write) wewill have some electrical alterations done, stainless steel cladding fitted around thecooking area, the extraction hood properlyinstalled with ducting through the wall andsafety system, and finally the gas for thecooker connected up and signed-off. We'restill a way off being able to serve hot food ona commercial basis, but at least groupsusing the building can use the kitchen toheat food and snacks for their own con-sumption.We do seem to be accumulating rather a lotof "lost property"! There are a number ofcoats, etc. that have been hanging in thecorridor for many months now, also twopairs of shoes. There's also a box in one ofthe sheds containing stuff from the firstcouple of years of opening. I'll post (proba-bly already done by the time you read this!)some photos on facebook. We havedecided that anything that remainsunclaimed after a couple more months willbe donated to one of the local charity shops(probably the Fisherman's Mission) - so ifyou are missing something, please get intouch soon! Many thanks for your continuing support,Mike Fleetwood,Chairman

Iguess it means different things to all of us; a building, a group of people we feel partof, an institution. It may mean something special because of a personal association:where you were married; where your family are buried; a place to go when you need

some space alone. For some, it may have negative associations, through a time whenyou were hurt, or through negative press. For our communities, one of the things Church speaks of is ‘community’, andespecially a connection with our roots. Church seems to be one thing that neverchanges. The stones are often ancient and speak of the generations who havegathered there. Most of our churches are open, and people go there for a sense ofsomething grounded, something unchanging and ‘other’. Except, of course, our churches do change; at one time pews and the organwere new-fangled inventions; there was no heating. And, of course, every church hadits own Vicar. And, at one time, everyone went there every Sunday; some singing in thechoir. Maybe they changed, but they always changed slowly. For most of their history, churches have simply been there. Church was something assumed, provided, some-thing you could go to. Of course, for some, Church has always been something greater than thebuilding: a special community of faith; the body of Christ expressed in a human familyand community. But even this has had a sense of something that has always beenthere; something available for you to join; something provided for you to help you growin faith and worship. When something is just there (as it always has been), something provided, something always available, people don’t often think about what it is, or what it shouldbe. The only question is whether you want to engage with it, what it might do for you. But, now, we do need to think about what Church is, what it means to us. Ascongregations age and get smaller, the upkeep of our buildings becomes much harder.Vicars, also, need to be paid, and there are less of them to go around. We are movingfrom a time when Church was provided to us (for us to use as and when we needed).Increasingly, Church is going to become whatever we all are willing to make it be. Already some communities have set up Friends groups to support the mainte-nance of their church buildings. But the buildings lose their meaning if they are notplaces of regular worship, gathering places for the true Church – the people God hascalled to him by faith in Jesus Christ.

I believe that Church (the people and the buildings) are important, somethingthat God wants to build with those who are willing to join with him. But, there’s the rub. It is time for a serious conversation. What does Church mean to you? What doyou want it to be? What are you willing to make it?Yours in Christ

LIZARD LIFEBOAT - VISITOR CENTRE NEWSBy David Gascoigne, Visitor Centre Manager

HAPPY NEW YEARThe Visitor Centre Team had to cope with a few unavoidabledifficulties in 2018. Atrocious weather at the start of the year, twoheavy (for the Lizard) snowfalls and essential maintenance work tothe station and the cliff face caused a significant reduction inavailable opening hours. More bad weather at other times duringthe year meant that key events were affected but we were not, ofcourse, alone with those problems. Fortunes were mixed. TheLizard Vintage Rally had yet another awful day and Lizard CarnivalFun Day had its share of the ‘wet stuff’ whereas the Grade RuanVintage Rally enjoyed their best day for some time!

ESSENTIAL MAINTENANCE WORK TO THE STATION STRUCTUREAND THE CLIFF FACE CARRIED OUT BY ‘VECTOR ROPE ACCESS’.

That said, amazingly, visitor numbers were 500 or so up on 2017with over 7,000 visits formally recorded through the Station doors.Only visitor numbers we can be certain of are formally recorded.Events such as Lifeboat Day, October AGM Open Day and theannual Carolaire have many more visitors than we can accuratelycount so those visits are not included in our figures. Visitorsattending a number of ‘formal’ and school visits also cannot bequantified precisely and are not included but, all in all, the CentreTeam provided a welcoming smile and assistance to approximately8,500 people making their visits as pleasant and interesting aspossible. A mammoth achievement indeed.

Visitors arrive at Kilcobben Cove from all parts of the UK and fromall over the world. In 2017 we welcomed visitors from 22 differentcountries. In 2018 we added to this with visitors from 7 countriesnot previously represented. These were:

BRAZIL CHILE COLOMBIA GEORGIA PORTUGAL ROMANIA SOUTH AFRICA

As a New Year teaser, can you match the correct country to thenational flags shown below?

The 22nd January this year saw the 160th anniversary of the tragicsinking of the SS CZAR on the Vrogue Rock, Bass Point, Lizard. The CZAR Captain (Captain Robert Jackson) was en route to Maltawith his ship laden with a valuable cargo of arms, munitions andother military stores when either her engines or her boilers (it is notclear which) began to give trouble. The Captain decided to turnabout and make for Falmouth but during the procedure came tooclose to land and fell foul of the infamous Vrogue Rock resulting inCaptain Jackson, his wife and child and 10 crew losing their lives.Although founded in 1824, there was no RNLI presence on this partof the coast at that time but the heroic efforts of local coastguardJohn Ridge and local boatmen saved the lives of the remaining 18crew members.

The tragedy had a profound effect on the local community. Inparticular, the Agar Robartes family of Lanhydrock were so movedthat members donated the monies required to provide the firstLizard Lifeboat, Anna Maria (named after Mrs Agar Robartes) and aboathouse for her atop Lizard Point. This first Lizard Lifeboat and

Happy New Year. Gardening is a circle with nobeginning nor end, but the days are getting appre-ciably longer now and there are a few signs of

spring and thoughts go to sowing a few seeds and seeing new life emerge. What have I got planned for February? Firstly it will be sowing mySweet Pea seeds. I will pre-chit these on damp tissue paper in a warm spot, then pot them individually so I will need at least 400 pots this will give meplenty of choice to pick the best strongest plants as the season goes on. Onething for sure when these get put in the greenhouse plenty of mouse traps willbe in evidence to protect my seedlings. Mice played havoc last year with mysecond and third sowings of Broad beans. They can be sown now in pots inthe greenhouse. At this time of year the greenhouse is the place to be. Firstlyclear all the junk and detritus out and wash it down with Jeyes fluid. This killslots of bugs and spores and cleans the glass, as getting as much light to yourplants at this time of year is essential. Wash anything and everything that youput back in the greenhouse and if you can treat the greenhouse with either asulphur candle (not if you have any plants in there) or an insecticide smokebomb. All this prep will not eradicate problems but will vastly reduce theprobability of getting any. If you plan to sow some seeds, invest in some good quality sterilisedseed compost. This is often more difficult to find, as usually you see amultipurpose type. A good quality version of this is fine but I would sieve it sothat it is not too coarse, plus add a little silver sand, to keep the medium open.Keep the bag of compost in the greenhouse to warm up a little before you useit and when buying compost do not bother with a bag which is wet and heavy. It has probably been hanging around for a long while and the best of thenutrients will have leached out if not other contaminants got in. Keep a bucketof water in the greenhouse so that it gets to an ambient temperature and usetap water rather than that from your water butts as there will be far fewermicrobes in it to cause problems when your seed does germinate. What other seed will I sow this month? I plan to sow the first lettuce, pointed cabbage, onions and leeks, plus perhaps some parsley. I found somefancy foxglove seed that I will give a go and was given some chilli pepperseed plus some seed from a mystery plant. I could sow begonias, lobelia, antirrhinums to name a few but I am going to let somebody else do the workand I will buy them in as plug plants. I am aiming early on to grow things which

do not need too much heat as this is expensive to produce. My only meansof heating is via a Paraffin heater and at £7 a gallon this soon mounts up. Outside in the veg patch, get on with digging the ground and if yourground is dry enough possibly plant out some onion sets and shallots, theywill appreciate it if you add plenty of well-rotted manure. Also tidy up aroundyour rhubarb crowns: remove any debris and weeds, fork over very lightly, add some fertiliser and more of the well-rotted good stuff. Good gardenhygiene is going to become more vital as the use of Metaldehyde slug pelletswill be phased out over the next 18 months and expect them to disappearfrom the shelves within six months. If you have not done so already, cut off the old leaves of yourhellebores so the fresh young flower shoots and leaves will look smart andunhindered. Whilst in your flower borders, hoe off any fresh weed seedlingswhich have germinated during that warm spell around Christmas. But becareful of any bulbs which are now poking their heads up through the soilhoping to be ready for the Spring show. Well get out there and enjoy your gardening. Think back to last yearwhen we had snow in February and March!
