About GPON
Gigabit Passive Optical Network with 2.488 Gbps downstream and 1.244Gbps Upstream
Passive Optical Power splitters used to share a single fiber with 32/64/128 ONTs/ONU
Dominant technology for delivering last kms access over fiber
International Standards Based Protocol ITU-T G.984.x and G.988 specified protocol developed by FSAN (Full Service Access Network) and interoperability by Broadband Forum (BBF)
G-PON use has been extended beyond providing FTTx Broadband Access to applications such as 2G/3G/LTE/WiMAX Mobile Backhaul (MBH) and Fiber to the Desktop
G-PON Dual IPv4 and IPv6 Stack support defined in G.988© 2012 3

G-PON for Railway SectorBroadband Railway Line (BRL) Networks
Example – RailTel Corporation’s Backbone DWDM Network
10
RailTel Corporation of India Limited, a Government of India undertaking under the Ministry of Railways, has built a state of the art backbone network of SDH & DWDM:
600 Cities 3,400 towns and village
stations 40,000 RKM (Routed km)
Present DWDM Network using STM-16 (2.488Gbps) 10,500 RKM
31 Points-of-Presence (PoPs) 100G which can be augmented
to 400/800G capacity 14,000 RKM planned in 2012
across additional 44 cities to cover whole of India
Network ready to deliver 10G

OLT is the hub of the virtual wheel. The trunk/feeder fibre is indicated by the solid red lines, the spokes, of which the fibre spurs off to the Primary Fibre Concentration Point (FCP).
ONT/ONUs grouped in clusters consisting of one or more zones, with each zone containing the Secondary Fibre Concentration Point (FCP).

Conclusion
Conclusion
G-PON’s passive, built-in traffic aggregation, seamless integration into existing fibre plants, huge user capacity, service oriented FCAPS, Advanced Security support, High Availability options such a path protection, and flexible ODN topology such a linear add/drop bus, makes it a perfect match for building Optical Broadband Railway Line (BRL) Access Networks
As Railway’s deploy G-PON for the Access and Edge Aggregation portion of their Optical Fibre communication (OFC) networks, it is expected that as of yet un-envisioned Railway-specific new revenue generating services and applications will be realizable due to G-PON’s any-play service architecture.
