It is therefore forbidden to use bread or other foods in a manner that may render them subsequently unfit for human consumption. As such the Shulchan Aruch forbids throwing foods that may become bruised or dirtied as a result and would be left uneaten (OC 171:1-5). It likewise discusses using a piece of bread as a utensil to assist in eating other foods, such as a salad shell or soup bowl made of bread or dough, and only permits this if it is clear that the bread will be eaten afterwards (OC 171:3). When it comes to throwing bread, this is forbidden even were the bread to remain perfectly edible after- wards, as we are mandated to show special respect to bread as the staple of human subsistence (OC 171:1). Even one who sees food lying in the street is supposed to move it to a more respectful or appro- priate place (a trash can is more a more respectful and appropriate place for discarded leftovers than a street) (MB 171:11). When discarding leftover food that is edible but is not really fit to serve again, one should try to do so in a way that is most respectful, ideally wrapped in its own bag and somewhat iso- lated from more foul trash (see Piskei Teshuvos 171:3). PARSHA QUESTION OF THE WEEK THE JEWS OF EGYPT & CIRCUMCISION

In our Parsha, the Jews are instructed regarding the Mitzvah of Korban Pesach, the offering of

the Paschal lamb. One of the requirements for participation in this offering was that the individuals

involved should all have undergone circumcision (Bris Milah). As the Torah reports that the Jewish

People went about the Mitzvah of offering the Korban Pesach, we are given the impression that this con-

dition was easily met by the masses of the Jewish People. Yet the Sages taught us otherwise, that in-

deed the Jewish People had largely forsaken the Bris during their years in Egypt, and that at this time,

in order to perform the Mitzvah of Korban Pesach, they underwent circumcision en masse. This is de-

rived from a number of veiled sources (see Shemos Rabbah 19:5).

Note however that the story seems to replay itself in the book of Yehoshua (Ch. 5), where the

Jewish People undergo circumcision en masse in anticipation of their offering of the Korban Pesach

upon entering Eretz Yisrael. There, however, the Torah clearly describes the performance of the circum-

cision, while here this aspect of the story is almost completely hidden. Why does the Torah choose to

hide - specifically in this instance - the fact that the Jews had abandoned circumcision?

HALACHA OF THE WEEK: A FEATURE OF THE BJSZ DAILY HALACHA SHIUR

TREATING FOOD WITH CARE & RESPECT

There is a Halachic mandate to treat food carefully, both to avoid needless waste and to show

proper respect and care to the blessings that Hashem has granted us (OC 171:1; see TB Taanis 20b and

Rashi there). It is therefore forbidden to use bread or other foods in a manner that may render them

subsequently unfit for human consumption. As such the Shulchan Aruch forbids throwing foods that

may become bruised or dirtied as a result and would be left uneaten (OC 171:1-5). It likewise discusses

using a piece of bread as a utensil to assist in eating other foods, such as a salad shell or soup bowl made

of bread or dough, and only permits this if it is clear that the bread will be eaten afterwards (OC 171:3).

When it comes to throwing bread, this is forbidden even were the bread to remain perfectly edible after-

wards, as we are mandated to show special respect to bread as the staple of human subsistence (OC

171:1). Even one who sees food lying in the street is supposed to move it to a more respectful or appro-

priate place (a trash can is more a more respectful and appropriate place for discarded leftovers than a

street) (MB 171:11). When discarding leftover food that is edible but is not really fit to serve again, one

should try to do so in a way that is most respectful, ideally wrapped in its own bag and somewhat iso-

lated from more foul trash (see Piskei Teshuvos 171:3).
