  • This is a lesson plan intended to be used around Valentines Day, but you could utilize it at any time of year. It teaches about Gods Love Letters to us in the Bible, utilizing scripture from 1 John. Ive also included an age-appropriate art project. The lesson is designed for childrens church or Sunday School and is intended for preschool children, ages 3-5.

Objectives: To develop a love for Gods Word in the hearts of young students. To equate love with God.

Materials to Prepare in Advance: Multiple 9 x 12 construction paper hearts (of varying colors). On each heart, write out the following verses. (Include big numbers on the back to correlate with the verses for the Bible lesson sequence.) You will also need blank hearts (smaller ones will be sufficient) for the Hide and Seek Game.

PRINT this lesson plan 1 John 4:8: Whoever does not LOVE does not know GOD, because

GOD is LOVE. 1 John 4:9: This is how GOD showed his LOVE among us: He sent his

one and only SON into the world that we might live through him. 1 John 4:10: This is LOVE: not that we loved GOD, but that he loved

us and sent his SON as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. 1 John 4:12: No one has ever seen GOD; but if we LOVE one another,

GOD lives in us and his LOVE is made complete in us. 1 John 4:16b: GOD is LOVE. Whoever lives in LOVE lives in GOD and

GOD in him. 1 John 4:19: We LOVE because he [God] first loved us 1 John 5:2: This is how we know that we are children of GOD: by

LOVING GOD and carrying out his commands. 1 John 5:3: This is LOVE for GOD: to obey his commands.

Welcome Activity: Have 912 construction paper hearts cut out for children to decorate with crayons, markers, or colored pencils. Assist the students in writing their names on the hearts. They will decorate one side now and complete the other side after the lesson. Collect the hearts when finished.

Bible Lesson: Prior to the students arrival, hide all of the scripture hearts and blank hearts around your room or play space.1. Sing the Song: Where is Love? (to the tune of Where is Thumbkin?)

  • Where is Love? Where is Love?

Here I am. Here I am. (point to Bible)

The Bible tells of Love. The Bible tells of Love.

Gods love for you. Gods love for me.2. Say: On Valentines Day every year, people show their love for others with cards, sweet treats, and kindness. But, there is Someone very special who shows us His love every day. Can anyone guess who Im talking about? (Yes! God!)3. God tells us He loves us in the Bible. The Bible is Gods love letter to us. It teaches us what love looks like, sounds like, and acts like. Today, I have hidden Gods love letters to you all around the room. These love letters are written on hearts. Do you think you can find them? Its time for Hide and Seek Hearts!4. Show the students an example of what they are looking for. Tell them that when they hear the Where is Love? song they are to return to their seats with their hearts. Have the students search for the hearts on the count of 3. Monitor the search, by ensuring that all children find at least one heart.5. Sing the Where is Love? song. Give the students a round of applause for finding the hearts! Ask the students to raise their hands if any of them found hearts with words and numbers on them. Does anyone have number 1? (You may want to draw the number on a chalkboard or whiteboard.) Have the student with the heart stand up and bring it to you.6. Say: Each of these hearts has a letter from God. Im going to read the letter while you listen carefully. Your job is to listen for two words. When you hear the word GOD, you need to point to the sky. (Or teach them the sign language sign for God hand facing sideways going down in front of face.) When you hear the word LOVE, you need to cross your arms over your chest.7. Collect and read each verse in sequential order, posting them somewhere if possible. (They can be used, afterwards, strung together as a garland or as accents for a bulletin board.) Explain each verse very briefly, in your own words.8. Thank you for listening to Gods love letters to you! Now that we know where love comes from, lets stand up and sing our new song, Where is Love? Sing the Where Is Love song a couple of times through.

  • (John 15:13, I John 4:8-10, 12, 16, 19, 5:2-3 ) ! Read the passage 3 times. Read it quickly. Read it slowly. The last time you read it take time to write down things you find interesting, that speak to you, or things you have questions about. Study and find out answers to the things you wrote down.

  • Special Activity:

Come Holy Spirit: Fizzy Explosion Prayers

This is a great activity for a prayer station or group prayer time focused on praying for the Holy Spirit to come. It would also work well for discussing the transforming power of the Spirit.

You will need: Bicarbonate of soda (baking soda), white vinegar, food colouring, eye droppers (less than 60p each at Boots!)

Mix food colouring into white vinegar to colour it. Keep each colour of vinegar in a separate cup and add a dropper to each cup. Cover the bottom of a baking tray with bicarbonate of soda.

Drop a drop of coloured vinegar onto the soda and watch the explosion!

Think and talk about:Talk about the power of the Spirit and how it can transform our lives if we pray for it to come. Compare this to the power of the explosion that happens when the vinegar hits

    the soda.

  • Craft: Trinity Triangle

Materials Needed for Trinity Triangle Craft:

Popsicle Sticks (available in plain or in colors at the Dollar Tree)

Markers School Glue or Glue Dots A piece of yarn or string

Each child starts with 3 popsicle sticks. You can either use colored popsicle sticks, or have the kids color them with markers themselves. We used red to symbolize the Holy Spirit (a very normal color symbol for the Holy Spirit since he came with tongues of fire and all) yellow for the Son (because the sun in the sky is yellow) and blue for the Father (because I think of the father as being up in the blue sky in heaven).

Write Father Son Holy Spirit one on each popsicle stick with a pencil and let you preschooler trace over it with a marker. I actually let my daughter use a sharpie marker, but it was highly supervised. I highly recommend having glue dots on hand for preschoolers because theyre so easy to use and you dont have to wait for them to dry- its instant! Theyre a good addition to your craft cabinet. Of course, you can also let them use regular school glue (which is washable). Either way, have them glue them together one at a time into a triangle shape. My suggestion is to let them glue it together their way (meaning if one of the words is upside down whatever!)

Tie a string around it so it can hang up. My daughter took a LOT of pride in the fact that she colored the sticks, wrote out the words, and glued it together herself. I would say this is an excellent craft for a preschool aged child.

  • Stuffed Heart - God is Love Even the youngest crafters can make this project. It's great for the children in the preschool room in a Sunday School to make and hang from the ceiling.

Includes quote from John 3:16 " For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life."

    Materials:

paper scissors stapler cotton balls or shredded newspaper IF HANGING: short piece of string, wool or ribbon OPTIONAL: finger paint (or tempra paint and brush)

    Instructions:

print two copies of the template (or just draw your hearts freehand but make them the same size). Do not cut out yet.

OPTIONAL: Let the children paint the templates with finger paints or a brush and

    tempra paint Allow to dry.

Cut out the hearts (adults will need to help with this) Staple all the way around the edge of the hearts, leaving an opening at the top Stuff hearts with shredded paper (kids age 3+ love to help with this step). Finish stapling the heart closed staple a short piece of string to the top to hang from the ceiling

  • Game: Gods Word Keep It!Materials: Childrens Bible Song CD, CD player, a Bible

    1. Play this game similar to Hot Potato. Have the students make a circle and sit down.

    2. Play your favorite CD of Childrens Bible Songs (my kids love any Cedarmount Ki ds Bible Song CD). As the music plays, have the children pass a Bible around the circle (a small Bible works best!)

    3. In the game, Hot Potato the children try to get rid of the object they are holding when the music stops. In this game, the children want to be the one holding Gods Word when the music stops.

    4. Have everyone cheer when the Bible stops in the hands of each child!

Duck, Duck, Goose: Place the traditional childrens game duck, duck, goose with the kids. Again this is a game that can go on and on forever just like Gods love for us.
