Farewell Thailand Students After nearly eight weeks Petch, Eye, Mai, Im and Khing are leaving Milton and Tokomairiro High this week to return to Thailand. Tokomairiro have enjoyed having them here and while they are happy to return to their families they all say they are going to miss the easy going nature of being in New Zealand. During the holidays they all enjoyed two nights in Queenstown where bungy jumping, luging, shopping and touching frost were highlights. In Milton as well as attending school they have had one day trips each week, during which they visited many of the beaches, helped to shear a sheep, bought lots of Cadbury chocolates, eaten lots of ‘Tip Top’ icecream, patted an alpaca, and also visited places with their homestays. The girls sung two farewell songs at Monday's assembly and all received certificates for completion of their course, you will all be missed. Below are some of their memories - Petch – I enjoyed playing sport and soccer, and learning in class. Teachers in NZ can be a friend to student but in Thailand no. Eye – Everything in NZ is really perfect. I thought no place can make me feel warm and safe like my house but when I came here I have had a great time in school and have many lovely friends. Mai – everyone is very friendly, they said ‘hi’ to me every time we met. I do physics here, it is not like in Thailand – it is fun! It has been exciting seeing lots of different things. Im – I’ve learned a lot; English culture, even cooking and a lot more! Foods here are delicious and not boring. I like the atmosphere of the classrooms, Id like classes in Thailand to be like this too. Khing – Toko is great, people here are so friendly. I enjoyed bungy, jet boat, luge, ice skating, beach and tunnel, Cadbury, shopping and icecream! I love NZ. FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK Kia ora Teacher Only Day Friday 13th May, this week, is the teacher only day. On this day the school will be closed for instruction and staff will be undergoing a professional development course based at our School. This day has been allowed for in our planning and does not affect the number of days that we are open for instruction this year. A notice about this day has already been given to students to take home. Home Meetings This term, with the assistance of the PTA, we are holding parent home meetings as part of our school self review process. This is an opportunity for parents to give their views on how our school is performing for their children, plus for the other children who attend. The Board of Trustees look forward to these meetings being held later in May and in June. Education Review Office In June we will be visited by the Education Review Office (ERO) which will also provide us with the opportunity to receive review information regarding our performance. ERO reviews focus on an overarching question: How effectively does our school's curriculum promote student learning: engagement, progress, and achievement? Blood Donors This week, on Tuesday, a good number of senior students donated blood, responding to a request made by the NZ Blood Service. This is another example of the positive community spirit our young teenagers have. Monday’s Assembly At assembly this week we farewelled our international students who

go back home to Thailand later in the week. Also, senior students gave a presentation on the Forty Hour Famine and invited all students to make the effort and participate this year. Tena Koutou Tena Koutou Tena Koutou Katoa Wayne Edgar Principal

HEALTH SNIPPET Diet and Exercise A balanced diet is important for your general wellbeing, helps your skin stay clear, and gives you more energy for daily activities. A healthy, balanced diet is rich in fruit, vegetables and starchy foods, contains moderate amounts of meat and alternatives, milk and dairy foods. Foods high in fat, particularly saturated fat, and/or

sugar should only be eaten in small amounts or infrequently. Milk, cheese, yoghurt, soya beans and nuts are rich in calcium which is needed for healthy bones and teeth. Exercise will not only help maintain a good body weight, it will give you more energy for everyday activities, help reduce stress and will also help you to focus better during school. Here are some ways in which you can exercise: - Hit the road, whether it’s running, biking or walking the dog - Have a game of tennis with friends - Get into a sport such as netball, rugby, basketball or soccer - Go for a hike - Take the stairs instead of the elevator - Walk or bike to school This health snippet was supplied by the Public Health Nurse: Lisa Sell (Contact details: 03 419 0465)

Golf Report

The South Otago Junior Football season started with a double – header with most teams playing two games. With very low cloud and persistent drizzle, it seemed ironic that it was also the opening day of duck shooting season! The player enthusiasm was undampened by conditions. Special mentioned must be made of our 12th Grade side who bettered their win – loss ratio of last season by recording 2 wins on opening day! Results: Midgets Milton Hunters won 4 – 3 against Catlins and drew with Cats Player of the Day – Ryan Clark

and Josh Abraham 8th Grade Milton Eagles won 3 – 2 against Catlins, Lost 7 – 2 to Leopards. Player of the Day – Meg Clark and Angel Thomas 10th Grade Toko drew with Pythons 2 – 2. Player of the Day – Thomas Paul and Patrick Norman 12th Grade Thunderbolts won 2 – 1 against Blue Barracudas, won 1 – 0 against Reds Player of the Day – Jess Walker and Elijah Prasad

Milton Junior Football Club Hi everyone, hard to believe another Round has nearly finished. Could captains get names from their teams for the next Round. Social squash is played every Monday night in hourly slots from 6pm until 9pm depending on what time your team is playing. This is the time if you are new to the district and want to play social squash, or you want to get back into playing. Give me a ring – Louise on 417 7167, so I can pop you in a team to suit your skill level. The keys will be changed in the next week or two, and to get a new key you have to pay your

Club fees. These fees are really important and they help to keep our Club running. There is a payment plan available if making a lump sum is a bit difficult. Please see Jillian. We would like to thank Eion Mills who has been donating his time to do some coaching. It is great to see the improvements in not only the new players but also some of our more experienced players. Eion has a wealth of experience and is available on Monday nights at 5pm. So pop in and see how he can improve your game.

Squash Report

There were no games played last Thursday night, but some interesting times coming up. After 2 Rounds of Interclub played the following results are: Moneymore 4 points, Milton 4 points, Milton Country Club 2 points, Glenledi 2 points, Kiness 0 points, St Mary’s 0 points. From Thursday May 12th – May 14th at the Balclutha Town Hall one will see some great bowls being played against the New Zea land and A us t ra l i an Representative Teams. The games start at 9.30am daily and finish around 4pm. If you are in Balclutha and have a half hour to spend, do go along and have a look. Also some of the shops around the Main Street area will have displays from all Clubs in South Otago so take a peek at these too. On Friday if you happen to go, it is “Black Out

Day” so please wear your “Black”. Reminder that St Mary’s Tournament is on Sunday May 22nd at 1pm at the Presbyterian Church Gymnasium. Entries to Molly Tiffany please. Social League is going to be on a Friday evening this year, starting at 7.30pm on May 27th. This entails two bowlers and two non-bowlers. If you would like to play in this competition please contact Molly Tiffany on 417 8564. This is a lot of fun, so get a team up or else contact an Indoor Bowler if you would like to play. That’s all for this week. See you all on the Mats. “Kitty”
