These summers, don’t let the heat wave roll over you and cripple your activities. Here are some useful suggestions to keep you cool and calm throughout the vacations and also complete your work

on time:-

Set out a timetable, by writing days of the weeks at the top, then adding

several rows and putting the dates in the corner of each box.

Remember that you mustn't put the homework off. Saving it for another day

isn't going to make it any better.

If you prefer, stick to one topic. Once you have it in your mind, do one project

at a time.

Do it in a relaxing environment so that you can focus, and are comfortable at

the same time.

Write a checklist- this gets your brain into gear, and you have more

satisfaction (maybe subconsciously) when you can tick things off. Do your

work in the hot hours of the afternoon and save the cooler evening

hours for outdoor activities.

SUMMER HOLIDAYS’ HOMEWORK

CLASS VII

ENGLISH

Q1. COMPREHENSION Read the passage carefully and answer in brief the questions that follow:-

Explore the Mariana Trench The Mariana Trench is located in the Pacific Ocean, just east of the 14

Mariana Islands (11"21' North latitude and 142" 12' East longitude ) near Japan. As

you probably already know, it is the deepest part of the earth's oceans, and the

deepest location of the earth itself. It was created by ocean-to-ocean subduction, a

phenomena in which a plate topped by oceanic crust is subducted beneath another

plate topped by oceanic crust.

The deepest part of the Mariana Trench is the Challenger Deep, so named

after the exploratory vessel HMS Challenger II; a fishing boat converted into a sea

lab by Swiss scientist Jacques Piccard.

The deepest part of the ocean is called the abyssal zone. It is host to

thousands of species of invertebrates and fish including such oddities as the

Angler Fish, so called because it uses a bioluminescent (life light) protrusion to

attract its prey. The Challenger Deep in the Mariana Trench is very cold, and

highly pressurized; its floor features hydrothermal (hot water ) outlets formed by

spreading tectonic plates which release hydrogen sulfide and other minerals

which are consumed by the barophilic bacteria which are then consumed by other

microorganisms, which are in turn, consumed by the fish, and so on. The

temperature around the outlets can reach up to 300° Celsius (572° Fahrenheit).

The escaping fluid is highly acidic, while the water from the deep ocean is

Page 3: G D GOENKA GLOBAL SCHOOL, HISAR - … · G D GOENKA GLOBAL SCHOOL, HISAR NH-10, Hisar (Haryana) “Coming are the days, when family together stays, ... CLASS VII ENGLISH Q1. COMPREHENSION

3

slightly basic. Although the escaping fluid is prevented from boiling due to its

dissipation into the surrounding freezing water, creatures from the deep show an

incredible

resistance to temperature extremes by having different proteins which are adapted

for life under these conditions; allowing the animals to eat, process food, and

reproduce.

The highest temperature bacteria can withstand is 113° Celsius (235°

Fahrenheit), and the highest any animal can withstand is 50° Celsius (122°

Fahrenheit). One animal which thrives near hydrothermal vents is the, "Vent

Crab" - their numbers are so vast that scientists are using the crab clusters to

locate hydrothermal vents.

Crabs and Angler Fish are but few of the many species of the Mariana Trench.

One mud sample taken from Challenger Deep by Oceanographers produced nearly

over 200 different microorganisms. Although there seems to be plenty of life at

these depths, no human being could withstand the pressure extremes.

Another interesting characteristic of these deep sea creatures is their

longevity(ability to live/last long); many of these animals having a lifespan of over

one hundred years, provided of course that they do not end up in fishing nets.

Since these creatures seldom migrate and are slow to develop, there is growing

concern over their endangerment.

Read the passage above about Mariana Trench and answer the following

questions in brief :

1. Give the exact geographical location of Mariana Trench ?

2. Why is Mariana Trench famous ?

3. What is the name given to the deepest part of the trench ?

4. Name two types of organisms found in the deepest part of the ocean ?

5. What does barophilic bacteria eat ?

6. What is the temperature surrounding hydrothermal vents ?

7. Which animal can resist the hydrothermal vent‟s heat ?

8. Why humans cannot dive down to see life in Mariana Trench ?

9. What is so interesting about the creatures of the deep seas ?
