CHRISTMAS MAGIC by Bea HamiltonIt was Christmas Eve, 1897U The snow came

down on the abandoned iog house, the forest anda!! over the land. The children, the first eight ofthe twelve to be, (1 hadn't come along in thosedays) stood with their noses flattened on the win-dow panes of the new chicken house that was nowtheir home. The snug, warm and crowded chickenhouse (this was before the chickens came, of course)"was a better place than the old iog house, situat-ed at the very edge of the forest, to await thebuilding of the main house,,

The eight children crovvcfe.dcsnQKmidvJiKvw;r*d--ows were gazing out anxiously, wondering if theywere going to have a Christmas tree to decorate,,Our mother, ever resourceful and cheerful, hadpromised there would be a tree»

It was late afternoon before father came in witha very small tree. It had to be small for the chick-en house was tiny-made for chickens and nota family of ten! A place, in a corner was foundferthe little tree and soon it was decorated by manyhelping hands. Decorations were few and many ofthem were home made, but it was the first tree inFulford for my family and it was the most beauti-ful and wonderful tree in the world.

My family had travelled from Liverpool onboard the old ship "Sardinia", and after a s!owjourney across the ocean, they arrived in Victoriain 1891, where they settled in Oak Bay for sixyears before they moved to Fulford„ That was in1897, and this was an exciting and historical yearfor my people. It was also a historical year for theBritish Empire for that was the year of .the lateQueen VictcriScj's Jubilee, 18970 So while theQueen was creating world wide history, my fami-ly quietly created their own little historical corn-er at Fulford Harbour,, They called the corner"Dromore", after our Grandfather's estate in Nor-thern Ireland,, Grandfather was Archdeacon Ham-ilton of Londonderry, Ireland. Ah, those old-fashioned Christmasesl Year after year, nothingchanged - there was the thrilling, never-endingcharm and magic of the Christmas season.

We were taught that the Christmas represent-ed the Christ's Birthday, and that added mysteryto an already glamourous time. And we believedin Santa Claus (Father Christmas we called him).1 am grateful to myfamlly for letting us little onesbelieve in Santa Claus0 That thrilling ceremonyof hanging up,our stockings, alone made Christ-mas a "magical11 time for us all. For those, thehappiest days of our lives, I thank God and ourparents for the mi id deception that brought suchjoy.

Somehow or other, in apcepting the mysticalcoming of a jolly old fellow, who pranced overthe roof tops with his then eight tiny reindeer(Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer hadn't joinedSanta's retinue in those days!) and who came

and nice red apples Somehow we connected oldSanta with the wondrous workings of God and whowere we to question such a lovely and profitable -and wholly delightful stunt? We youngsters tookSanta to our innocent young hearts with joy andconfidence-, It was a sad day when we discover-ed what made Santa tick - something went outof Christmas, never to return.

And what gifts we made in those early days!Everything from pin cushions to penwipers - can-dy and bread - we even made beads by usingsome kind of paste, salt and coloring, lovelyto look at - until they got damp and then theywere awful. Our lorjgsuffering grown ups, oldersisters and brothers gleaned an odd assortment ofgifts over the years!

How horrified our Fire Marsha! would be ifhe had seen our lighted Christmas tree - littlecandles in their shell like guards, iit all overthe tree, sputtering and winking land while thegrown ups stood guard, we feasted our awe-Struckeyes on the shining tree, and nary a fire did wehave I Father took care of that*

Ah! the dinner at night „ Can we ever forgetthe plum pudding coming In on a large platter, the brandy blazing, the curling blue flames likehungry tongues, covering the pudding and siz-zling, the sprig of holly stuck on top? In thedim light of oil lamps and candles, this was, tous, the finale to a glorious day - and the mostspectacular thing that had ever happened, !

All that made Christmas very worth while. And on Boxing Day, we small children startedcounting the days to the next Christmas! Lovely,care-free days of childhood! No wonder the po-ets moan about lost childhood days!

The beautiful story of the Christ Child re-mains, and Christmas will always be a magicaland happy tim^e for us all at home . „ . .and Ihope it will be for all of you in your homes . ,Merry Christmas to you and, as Tiny Tim said,"God biess us every one,"

I met Ja.<d o u^y or so avter Christmas walk-ing up the wharf heading for the store* Jake liveson Squawfree Island, one of the very tiniest of theOuter Island group, and probably the only reasondvSalt Spring Islander can talk to Jake withoutgetting into an argument about ferry service, isbecause Jake is the only living soul on Squaw-free Island and he gave up figuring on gettingferry service around 1929 when a Conservativecandidate rowed over there to get Jake's vote, and was staking oul a wharf site before he foundout Jake wasn't on the voters' list.

"Well, Jake," I said, just to make convers-ation, "was Santa Claus good to you?" And assoon as I said it I was sorry, because Jake hasbeon batching so long he's forgotten about theold boy in the red suit who creates all the excite-ment at Christmas.

Jake put his empty packsack down carefullyon the wharf, and looked up and down the gang-way, and behind me, as if tio3make]sair!B;ith6'boastvwas clear. I wondered if he was listed and want-ed me to fetch him a crock, but it seemed he justwanted to be sure we were alone.

"I don't know about this Santa Claus fellow,"Jake whispered, "but I've got into the damndestjackpot you ever saw".

"Now, Jake," I said, "if you've spilt yourhome brew barrel again, it's just a simple matterof putting a new floor in the roothouse, and per-sonally, if I were you, I wouldn't make it so darnstrong anymore."

But it was more than that."Just sit on the rail here a bit," Jake asked,

"while I tryto getthisthing organized in my ownhead. You know, around this time of the year, the Kelly boys from Galiano usually drop over &spend an evening with me, and last week I wasbusy getting everything ready. I had several ofthose bottles off the high shelf that Fred says hasto be kept up there on account')they'll explodenear a cigarette, and I had a big slab of thatcheese that Ben keeps until a goat backs awayfrom her, a big sack of onions and a real refinedbarrel of Old Squawfree Special Homebrew. Ieven fixed the we 11-top that Joe Kelly fell thr-ough last year so's to save all that time lookingfor him, and I put another brace on the back ofthe cabin because that's the wall Lon Kelly usu-ally tries to run through."

"Well, it was getting pretty late at night,, ormaybe it was morning - I did a little testing tosee if that barrel was at its peak, and I just aboutgive up hope that the Kelly boys were coming atall, when I heard them on the path. They did alot of jingling and stamping out there, then Joecame stomping in the door. You know how bigJoe is, anyway, and he had stuffed himself intoa big red suit with white trimmings, and hung a

big false white beard on himself to try and foolme, and he darned near filled my whole shackoHe ho-ho-hoed around in there till he near burstthe wolls, but I'd know Joe anywhere, and hedidn't fool me a bit-

"You get out of that union suit and fetch yourdrinking mug over here," i told him, "and I'llgive you something to ho-ho about"„

"Well, this didn't faze Joe at alL He cameover and shock his finger a! me and sgidf "Myboy,, it's been many, many years since I calledon you, so you probably don't remember the timefifty years ago I forgot to fetch that jack knifefor you but I've finally found you and now IVegot to make it up"o

"Joe has a sharp ear, and I'm not too sur-prised he picked up that jack knife stuff duringour parHes but he didn't let down a bits

"Try some of thisncheese, Joe i f" I asked,"Ben says this time the goat died,"

"But Joe wasn't having any*"You just tell me what you need most in the

world, Jake f" he says, waggling that big falsebeard, "and I'll see you get it, because IVe letyou down once on a promise, and it's got to beset righ*0"

"Now,, Joe f" I said to him,, "you know darnwe!! IVe got everything I want. I've got thesweetest spring water in the Islands, the roofdon't leak anymore si nee I tarred it, and i movedthe privy up only thirty feet from the door, so1 don't need anything at alL I suppose the onlything I could use is a good cook, because some-times I get awful tired of my own cooking„"

While Jake and I were talking the MotorPrincess had arrived, and in the bustle and con-fusion, a chap from Port Washington leaned onmy chest and rasped: "If they call it the 'Queenof Salt Spring^ we're gonna sink it!"

Jake was gone by the time i dug out fromunder the Port Washington chap who had ninenew schedules he was working on, so I didn't getto hear the rest of Jake's story, or why he was ina jackpot.

But a little later I was passing the LadiesWear section in the store, and there was Jakewith a whole raft of parcels.

"I suppose she'll need one of those housecoatthings, too," he was grumbling„

I s t i l l don't know.**************************

ML :E OF THIS

Nature is like on open bock/

For us to en ••> arid look;A sunny stream, a placid Sake, the silvery fish, that strutting drake. This to rne is nature sweet,!n every detail so complete.

That pine upon a craggy rock,Thpse rustling leaves that seem to talk; The birds in the eariy morning sing,To announce a breakfast that they bring; And in the evening as the dusk is falling,I hear the sound of the swallows calling. Then there are those evergreens so stately,That stand so tall, and needed so greatly; The place where we often loved to swim, iVVi!! never be lost, never to dim;And best of all that magnificent mountain,That breaks the sky like a giant fountain.

A walk in the woods will surely reveal,How this poem is so very real; That buck beside the ancient maple tree,The doe and fawn so near, but hard to see;The quail scattering across the path. With their topknots to make you laugh; The eagle so high in the air,Searches for a careless hare; The robins that are building their nests,The humming bird which stops to rest; These are all in that open book,But people seldom stop to look.

For in this book only the good is told,Cause the good is what every memory will hold; And like a book the pages turn back,When we are older and spirit we lack;So stop to look and you'll surely see,The book of nature, that all might see.

M E R R Y C H R I S T M A S - by Bea H a m i l t o n"Colored lights and holly wreaths, ivy green

and sola! leaves - a little bit of color here, alittle bit of tinsel there, Christmas time in Ful-ford, with happiness and cheer,"

The festive season is here again and we reallydid start the Christmas week with a musical note,(and a few lines of not so good rhyme) but wemade up for that by having a glorious carol ser-vice in St. Mary's Church on Wednesday eve-ning. The Rev.S.J. Leech had spent a few eve-nings poyndinga little music into the choir, andthere was too little time to practice carol sing-ing. But the lovely carol service brought a feel-ing of joy and gladness to all who were present.Especially lovely were the two solos sung by Mrs.Leedhi. "A Cradle Song of the Blessed Virgin1',and 11Sleep, Holy Babe". Mrs» Leech's beauti^ful voice was a joy to hear and the real meaningof Christmas and the Christ's birthday was felt byall.

And on Saturday, the children of Sf» Mary'sSunday School, will put on their wonderfulChristmas Pageant, "The Christmas Candles". Thewelcome will be given by Sharon McManus andthe good-bye by Linda Slingsby. ' It is hopedthat many will be there to hear the children,, OnSunday, there will be the regular service withHoly Communion, and on Christmas Day, at11:30, there will be a Holy Communion Serviceat St. Mary's Church.
