Fleetwood Student Conquers Ben NevisLocal student, Tim Makinson (20), is feeling on top of the world just now, having conquered Britain’s highest mountain in a wheelchair. Sponsored by a leading Scottish whisky company, the Bowmore Ben Nevis Challenge 2011 aims to raise money in support of Capability Scotland, whose Fundraiser Suzanne O’Hara said,” We are delighted that Tim decided to be part of this tremendous challenge. In Scotland we have some of the most beautiful landscapes in the UK and disabled people, just like non-disabled people, want the opportunity to explore and enjoy every part of the country, an opportunity they’re not always given. By taking part in this unique event Tim is not only helping raise valuable funds for Capability, but also helping to challenge the way people think about disability”.

In total eight teams of six people made the attempt, each led by someone with a disability. The enterprise was headed by ex- SAS officer and TV presenter, Ken Hames, who was also behind the original 2008 challenge which saw the UK’s first wheelchair-led ascent of Ben Nevis.

Having successfully led his ‘Hillbillies’ team up Scotland’s greatest munroe, Tim is now setting his sights even higher, cherishing an ambition to climb Africa’s highest, Kilimanjaro.

The Bowmore Ben Nevis Challenge 2011 has certainly shown that, with the help of dedicated well wishers, few dreams are off limits.

eatHello

August is all but behind us now and despite the summer of 2011 disappearing very quickly, I can confidently say that it has been a summer of low anti social behaviour and reduced levels of reported crime across all categories, not just criminal damage. A lot of work has been put into creating diversionary activities for children during the school holidays in partnership with other organisations, the Fire Service and the local authority. These appear to have been well received and we will be looking at building on them in the future.

Our attention remains focussed on an address on Forshaw Close by assisting in the eviction of the disrespectful tenants. We continue to provide high visibility patrolling in the area and are robustly acting on all information

passed to us about criminality in the area. I hope to be able to report to you in next month’s magazine that this address will no longer be blighting the lives of those nearby. The Neighbourhood Team are also focussed on anti-social issues on Addison Road, and assisted by Wyre Borough Council, we are taking action against a particular address.

Lancashire Constabulary has provided a number of officers to work on a mutual aid basis assisting our colleagues in London and Manchester over this past few weeks due to the riots and will continue to do so. Several officers including myself were deployed out of Lancashire and witnessed some disturbing scenes as shown on television. Lancashire has not suffered any form of unrest and we will maintain this by working

with you to ensure that such incidents are not repeated here.

Finally, if you have any information or concerns, you can contact us at your PACT meetings, by phone on 01253 876611, via our Lancashire Constabulary website or if you prefer to remain anonymous, you can call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

ThankyouPS Dan Whitaker

LOAN NEWS

Jack Duggan made an immediate impact on his second loan spell at Lancaster City. The 18-year-old scored an own goal to give Ossett Town a first half lead but made amends later in the game. He scored a second half goal in the opposition net which helped the Dolly Blues to 3-1 victory.

Duggan impressed in his next game - and away win at Cammell Laird - by taking the Lancaster man of the match award and was described as “ruthless in the air and assured with the ball on the deck”.

Meanwhile, midfielder duo Liam Wyn and Ryan Tanser have joined Evo-Stik Division 1 (North) side Clithereo for a one month loan period.

I hope you all had a good time, whether at home, or away. The weather overall was not too bad, chance to do things in the fresh air, on the beach, in the park, BBQ’s etc. I know all the young ones who attended any of the Holiday Clubs will have had the whale of a time – so much to do, and so many others to share activities with. Look out for details of next year’s dates. Unfortunately, all good things have to come to an end! Now it’s back to work and school once again.

A Horrible Day in the Dungeon! I’ve had a horrible day, shut in a dark room with strangers, shouted at, had blood and guts sprayed on me and finally been beheaded. That all went to plan then for the preview at Blackpools newest Dungeon attraction!

By 1 September, all eight of Merlins attractions will be open in Blackpool, including of course, the new Blackpool Dungeon which has been previewing this afternoon.

The guests were met for their afternoon of terror at the brand new entrance at the back corner of the building. It’s a living a breathing attraction and the starring ghouls, torturers and spirits marched along the precinct banging their drums and chanting their spells to the delight of the hoards who instantly gathered to watch. Chief Judge read out the edict proclaiming the attraction open, and asked the witches to lead the way!

Having your head chopped off by a stranger is an entertaining start to an afternoon, and it only got better, as a small group were led into the depths of the building, and into the darkness - to be greeted by the first in a line of weirdos with bad teeth! The black jester asked ‘Why does history keep repeating itself’ (answer, because no one listened the first time!) and he’s also got a natty line in songs and rhymes!

Bundled into a cage we began the descent to hell, and through a series of rooms, corridors and doors, being jumped at by dead bodies, narrowly missing the emptying of the jerry through a window, and various other cold draughts and insults. The route is through history and the plague, the marauding Vikings and Saxons, the Civil War and nearby Skippool Creek with a bit of local historical fact thrown in for good measure.

The nurse was particularly entertaining, although hopefully not available on the NHS! Pity the poor ‘volunteer’ strapped to the chair who had his buboes cured through removal of his insides. We felt his ills being cured with

leeches as they wiggled under our seats and his screams were curdling - so were ours when we were sprayed with his blood and guts!

The Witches of Pendle Hill is a piece of Lancashire history and this afternoon we met one of them - swinging by the neck, having been tried and found guilty. Apparently we’d all been condemned and went to the next room to meet our own fate.

Strapped to a bench we came face to face with the jury, were tried and condemned and the lever was pulled..... at which point we plunged to our end with much screaming!

The attraction is an hour and ten minutes or so, plus the time it takes you to navigate the horrors for sale in the Dungeon shop, is very well done and very high quality all round. I remember the Chamber of Horrors in the old Madame Tussauds in the 70’s and it’s very much not like that at all. The costumes and make-up are excellent and how do they make their teeth look so foul? Even on the first previews it was a slick production, where the only hiccups were a slightly stuck door and the Judges hat falling off in the middle of the trial! You’d really have thought that the actors had been doing it all their life instead of this being one of their first performances to strangers. A slight smell of fillers was the only thing that reminded you that this was all brand spanking new, and I quite like the smell of fillers anyway!

The Merlin way is to offer combination ticketing, with the slogan ‘The more you see, the more you save’. So if you want to come on holiday and go to several attractions over the course of a few days you will save more by buying the combination that suits you. An adult ticket to the Dungeon is £14.40 when bought alone, and you can save more with a ‘First to Scream’ offer if you buy tickets online before the 1 September, from www.thedungeons.com. The Dungeon is open from this Saturday (27 August). And get this, the manager is really called Gary Blackadder. How could you find a better job with a name like that!

Merlin aim to make memorable experiences with their attractions and that’s exactly what they have done in the Dungeon. ‘Have a horrible day.....’

Fleetwood Gym NewsThe junior football Kicks off on September 3rd for our Under 11’s to Under 14’s and on September 10th for the Under 7 to 10’s, so in preparation all our team took part in our Annual “Daz Smith Tournament”.

We hold this event in remembrance of Darren Smith. The event was held on Saturday 27th August at King Georges, Darren’s footballing home.

We invited local club South Shore Youth from Blackpool and Benchill Celtic from

Manchester.

All our club team from Under 7’s to Under 14’s competed in the competition in small round robin groups except the Under 7 and 8’s who playing in a friendly group.

Both Under 7’s and 8’s did really well winning most of all there friendly fixtures. The management teams for both were really pleased with their performances over the day.

The under 9’s and 10’s both did well yet again against both South Shore and Benchill Celtic. This is the first time most of our Under 9’s players have played in our Daz Smith Tournament, with it being a brand new team. the Under 10’s dominated there group and took and won all but one of their game and drew the other.

The Under 11’s played against Layton Junior as a replacement game due to South Shore and Benchill pulling out last minute. Fleetwood gym Under 11’s put in a great performance and pulled out a 2 -1 win.

The under 12’s drew against Benchill Celtic in a well fought fixture.

The Under 13’s played against South Shore Youth and putting a great performance, the final score was 6 – 2 with goals Connor McNally(3), Lewis Whittaker, Jack Gill and Calvin Lee.

The under 14’s played in a group of 3 with Fleetwood Gym Yellows, Fleetwood Gym Blues and South Shore. The group winners were Fleetwood Gym Blues.

The over club winners Fleetwood Gym, this is the first time in the competitions 3 year that Fleet-wood gym has won, so a big well done to all the players and manager at Fleetwood Gym for you brilliant effort.

Could i also thank Fleetwood town who brought there Under 16’s and Under 18’s to play Benchill Celtic.

And lastly the main event of the day saw a combined team made up from the Parents and Managers playing the old team managed by Paul Helsby which went on to be the most successful junior football team ever in the Fylde, they nick-named them self the Fleetwood Gym All-stars. It was a close thought game. With both team trying to show their youth players which were watching they still had it, they entertained the crowd. The final score was 3 -1 to the All-stars a great first game back for them in over 10 years and even more surprisingly they all fit into their old kit from when they were 15!!! There all nearly 30 now.

Fleetwood Gym Under 14’s Yellows are looking for players to add to their squad if you would like to play then contact team manager Gary Larsen on 07432101286

For any information about playing football for Fleetwood Gym then contact Club Secretary Barry Whittaker on 07775928332 or see www.fleetwoodgym.co.uk

PERTH - An SAS trooper collecting toys for children was stabbed when he helpedstop a suspected shop-lifter in east Perth..

The ‘Toys-R-Us’ Store Manager told ‘The West Austral-ian’ that man was seen on surveillance cameras last Friday putting a laptop under his jacket at the store.

When confronted, the man became irate, knocked down an employee, pulled a knifeand ran toward the door.Outside were four SAS Troopers collecting toys for the “Toys For Tots” program.

Smith said the Troopers stopped the man, but he stabbed one of them, in the back. The cut did not ap-pear to be severe.

The suspect was transported by ambulance to the Royal Perth Hospital with twobroken arms, a broken leg, possible broken ribs, broken collar bone, multiple contusions and assortedlacerations including a broken nose and jaw...

The injuries were apparently sustained when he tripped whilst trying to run away just after the stabbing. There are small numbers of Bangladeshi Mariners residing in UK and serving in various renowned company including offshore industry and government civil service like Maritime and Coastguard Agency in respectable position.

Our honourable MP Mr Eric Ollerenshaw was invited in the re-union and his presence made the event more glorious. Our fellow Mariners exchanged there thoughts and briefed our culture in marine society of Bangladesh. All thanked him for being with us in the event. We hope, he enjoyed and loved our company. He also informed us that it was helpful for him to be in the event as he is due to visit in Bangladesh in September 2011.

The main target of this type re-union is to know each other closely and meet family members every two years. All of us are very busy and this
