Reviewing all the opportunities contained within this guide is a quick way for Girl Scouts to get involved in amazing local events and programs by herself, with her troop or with her family!

Get information on new activities and also register online for these opportunities at girlscoutsgcnwi.org. The registration site register.girlscoutsgcnwi.org features an online calendar which enables girls, families and troops to search for events and workshops by age level, by date or by subject. Users must create a login and password the first time they access it. Girls must be registered members of Girl Scouts in order to participate in programs. We also welcome girls who have never been Girl Scouts before ... just sign up and pay the $15 national Girl Scout membership fee when you sign up for these activities.

Forms and ResourcesMany council forms are available online. To ensure use of the most recent version of each form, download forms as needed and discard previous versions. Most council forms online are PDF (portable document format) files. PDF forms are “read-only” and must be opened with Adobe Acrobat Reader (a free plug-in) and printed.

Download Adobe Acrobat Reader at: http://get.adobe.com/reader/. In addition, forms are available in the Girl Scout Gathering Plac-es located in Chicago, Homewood, Joliet, Lisle, Merrillville and Vernon Hills or through your service team.

Get Started!Program ResourcesIn addition to the opportunities found in this guide, Girl Scouts and volunteers have a wealth of resources available to help them make the most of their Girl Scout experience. In addition to reviewing what is available on our website, we recomend connecting with other Girl Scout volunteers, visit-ing any Girl Scout Gathering Place or Council Shop or shop for resources online at your own leisure 24 hours a day/7 days a week at shopgirlscouts.org.

If you can’t wait to sign up for these activities, be sure to share your excitement with your friends. If they are already Girl Scouts, that’s great! If not, let them know they can join you for these activities as soon as they sign up as Girl Scouts. It’s easy! Encourage them to go to girlscoutsgcnwi.org/join with their parents!

To locate specific workshops and events, go to the online reg-istration system and search by topic, level or award. Online registration is available for council-wide programs, workshops, train-ings and service projects. Pay online using a credit card, debit card or bank account draft.

Visit our online calendar and registration system by going to our home page at girlscoutsgcnwi.org and clicking on the “Register for Programs” link featured in the page footer. Or go directly to register.girlscoutsgcnwi.org.

Option 2: Register by Mail, Fax or In-PersonFill out a Program Registration Form (avail-able at the back of this guide) and drop off, mail or fax it to the attention of our Girl Scout Program Registrar at the Lisle Gather-ing Place, 2400 Ogden Ave. Suite 400, Lisle, IL 60532-3933. Additional registration forms are available at all Gathering Places or can be downloaded from the council website at girlscoutsgcnwi.org/forms. The form may be duplicated as needed.

There is no limit to the number of programs for which you can register. Simply complete a separate registration form for each pro-gram. Individual girls or troops of girls are welcome as each program indi-cates. Payments can be made by check or by Visa, MasterCard, Discover or debit card.

Program registration is live as soon as this guide is posted!

SnacksDue to allergies, outside snacks are not per-mitted at council programs. No food will be supplied by the council unless specifically stated in the program description.

Deadlines and Min/Max RequirementsOnce registration begins, programs will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Registration will continue until the program has reached the maximum number allowed or the registration deadline which is two weeks prior to the program date. Programs may be cancelled if the stated minimum is not met. All programs are subject to change or cancellation.

Program FeesAll program fees must be paid in full with the registration. Fees are deposited when the registration is processed. Do not postdate checks. There will be a $25 service charge for checks returned due to insufficient funds.

Fees listed are per girl. Events/workshops listed are generally for girl members only. A limited number of programs are also available for adult participation. Adults must pay when participating as noted.

Unless specified as a family or parent/girl program, use the recommended ratios for the number of adults per girls as listed in the Safety Activity Checkpoints found on our website at girlscoutsgcnwi.org/forms.

Normal fee charges help cover supplies and/or facilitator’s fees. Actual costs are offset by council funding such as fall product and Girl Scout Cookie program profit, “Family Partnership” contributions, grants and other funder allocations.

SiblingsSiblings may not attend programs unless they are fully registered Girl Scouts who meet the age level recommendations for the program or if the program is specified as a family event.

AwardsInsignia such as petals and badges, journey awards and keepsakes, patches and charms are not included in the program fees unless indicated. Insignia may be purchased at any Council Shop. Requirements are achieved by the interpretation of the facilitator.

Cancellations and RefundsIf the council cancels an activity or an event for any reason, troops or families will receive a full refund. Council events and activities run rain or shine unless there are safety concerns which prompt the council to issue a cancellation notice. Participants choosing not to attend will not be issued a refund. Refunds will be made as follows:• No refunds issued on pre-purchased tickets.• Refund requests must be made in writing prior to registration deadline.• No refunds will be made for registrants not attending the program.• Girl and adult membership registration is non-refundable.

Girl-Adult RatioAdult volunteers are needed at some pro-grams to maintain the appropriate girl/adult ratio. If space is limited, once the girl/adult ratio has been met, no additional adult regis-trations will be accepted.

Male VolunteersMen are encouraged and welcome to participate in Girl Scouts as volunteers or event chaperones. Separate accommoda-tions will be made as appropriate in accor-dance to Safety Activity Checkpoints which specifically prohibits men from sleeping in the same space as girl members. Men may participate in overnights only if sepa-rate sleeping quarters and bathrooms are available for their use. For more information about overnight regulations for male volun-teers, call 630-544-5900, or e-mail: [email protected].

Girl Scouts goto2040Imagine today’s Girl Scout Daisy in the year 2040. She will be 32 years old, contributing to society as an adult in the workforce, voting in her community, and continuing to make the world a better place. Our 17-year-old Girl Scout Ambassador will be 45 in the year 2040. The world is theirs to build and to embrace for a lifetime. To prepare girls for the future, we have created Girl Scouts goto2040, a set of resources for Troop Leaders and Girl Scout Daisies through Ambassadors to use as the context of your Girl Scout Leadership Experience in your community.

Girl Scouts goto2040 provides a new community context to the Girl Scout Leadership Experience. By helping a girl to understand the needs of her community, girls think in new ways about their badge earning, Take Action Projects and Bronze, Silver and Gold Award Projects with an appreciation for the project’s contribution to the region as a whole as well as impacting her own community. Supported in part by The Searle Funds of The Chicago Community Trust, Girl Scouts goto2040 has as its basis the GOTO2040 Plan presented by the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning combined with the Quality of Life Indicators for Northwest Indiana to create a vision for Girl Scouts in the geography of Girl Scouts of Greater Chicago and Northwest Indiana. Girl Scouts goto2040 is aligned with the Journey series as well as The Girl’s Guide to Girl Scouting. Go to girlscoutsgcnwi.org/girlscoutsgoto2040 to access resources including the GOTO2040 Short Plan, Quality of Life Indicators for Northwest Indiana, badge alignment opportunities, commu-nity tool kit for working with your local government, age chart for girls to learn how old they will be in the year 2040, and a fun cootie catcher activity to inspire new ideas!

The four sections of the plan include: livable communities, human capital, efficient governance and regional mobility, all of which inspire volunteers and girls alike to look at their communities and region in a new way, with a new lens on the future.

Here is a glimpse into the plan:

LIVABLE COMMUNITIESThough opinions differ on what makes a community appealing, livable communities tend to share some common traits. They are healthy, safe and walkable. They offer choices for timely transportation to schools, jobs, services, and basic needs. They are more cost-effective for individ-uals and local governments. They make the region more economically competitive.

Recommendations• Achieve Greater Livability through Land Use and Housing• Manage and Conserve Water and Energy Resources• Expand and Improve Parks and Open Space• Promote Sustainable Local Food

Page 5: FY14 Program Essentials_CadSRAmb

5

HUMAN CAPITALThe quality of our region’s labor force is crucial for sustaining economic prosperity. Increasingly, job growth relies on the availability of well-educat-ed, skilled workers for knowledge-based industries. We can gain a signifi-cant advantage by ensuring that businesses and residents here have the skills necessary to compete with other global economic centers.

Providing equitable opportunities to gain those critical skills is among our region’s most complicated challenges. Disparities in educational attain-ment, health, and other measures — often based on income levels, race, or ethnicity — put the entire region’s economy at risk. Recommendations• Improve Education and Workforce Development• Support Economic Innovation

EFFICIENT GOVERNANCEEfficient and effective decision making by government is necessary to meet the goals of GO TO 2040. Now more than ever, taxpayers expect effi-ciency and transparency when governments invest their limited resources. To maximize the benefits that residents of our seven counties see from these public investments, government agencies across our region need to coordinate decisions and investments strategically.

Better access to information will help us reach these goals by putting es-sential data at the fingertips of not only our local decision makers but also the residents they serve.

Recommendations• Reform State and Local Tax Policy• Improve Access to Information• Pursue Coordinated Investments

REGIONAL MOBILITYA modern transportation system is indispensable for our region’s future prosperity. To sustain our economy and quality of life, residents must be able to travel quickly and easily around our region so they can choose from a wide variety of jobs and communities in which to live. Businesses must be able to count on the timely delivery of their goods. Historically, our region’s trans-portation system has been a foundation of our success. But the system’s infrastructure was built decades ago, with inadequate ongoing investment to keep it up to date. While transportation is still a significant strength of this region, we must modernize our system to compete with other U.S. and global economic centers.Recommendations• Invest Strategically in Transportation• Increase Commitment to Public Transit• Create a More Efficient Freight System

2014 Program Details:Who: High-school-age Girl Scouts (ages 14 and up or at least entering the 9th grade in the fall)When: June 15 - 20, 2014Cost: None for girl participants. Bus transportation provided from downtown Chicago to Camp Butternut Springs.

How do I apply? The application process for 2014 Camp CEO gets underway this fall. The application deadline is Jan. 31, 2014. The application and more information, including videos, can be found on our website under the “Just For Teens” section at girlscoutsgcnwi.org/just_teens.

For information, send an e-mail to [email protected].

Camp CEO is simply not like anything you’ve ever experienced. As a girl participant, you will discover that the women who run local companies and make important decisions every day were once teens just like you, trying to decide where to go to college and what they wanted to be.

This is YOUR chance to ask them questions, hear their stories and learn how the choices they have made have impacted their lives and professional paths.

In addition to powerful one-on-one sessions with the women who volunteer their time to be at Camp CEO, you’ll also connect to other teen girls by participating in fun camp-based activities like swimming, team-building games and archery.

You can participate in any number of personal development opportunities ranging from yoga, self defense, dressing for success and networking workshops. Then plan and host a huge dinner party with fancy place-settings, table decorations and party food. The adult campers, the CEOs, will participate right along with you in all these activities.

This Camp CEO experience will change the way you view yourself and the concept of leadership.

Disability AwarenessBR, JR, CAD, SR, AMBHave you ever wondered how it would feel to be blind or deaf or spend your waking hours in a wheelchair? Maybe you know someone with a disability. Maybe you will someday consider a career working with people with disabilities to find ways to make lives easier or to make environments more accessible for everyone. The Disability Awareness patch program provides an opportunity for girls to better understand the daily life of people with disabilities as well as explore careers in relevant fields.

Making Girl Scout History All Grade LevelsThis patch program offers troops and indi-viduals an opportunity to learn the history of Girl Scouting while enjoying a variety of activities. The Making Girl Scout History patch serves as the base patch and has de-cade segments that are earned separately. Program kits to help troops and individuals earn the base patch can be borrowed from the various Gathering Places. Contact [email protected] for programs.

American Cultural Heritage Patch Series All Grade LevelsThis patch series provides girls the oppor-tunity to develop leadership skills they can use now and throughout their lives. The cultural backgrounds included in this patch series are African Americans, Asian Americans, European Americans, Latin Americans and Native Americans.

B.F.I.T.—Be Fit All Grade LevelsThe B.F.I.T. patch program includes activities for girls ages 5-18 that focus on healthy living. B.F.I.T. promotes an active interest in fitness and develops healthy lifestyles through a variety of fun-filled activities.

Dinosaurs - BRDinosaurs big and small once roamed the Earth. Today, there are no dinosaurs left, but scientists can tell us all about them based on their fossils, or preserved remains. Discover what something as simple as a footprint can tell you about dinosaurs in this Brownie badge!

Paleontology: Can You Dig It?JR, CAD, SR, AMBMillions of years ago, dinosaurs roamed the Earth. While no humans existed to record what they ate or how they lived, paleon-tologists have a pretty good idea of these repiles’ habits. Follow in the footsteps of these scientists as you, too, discover the secrets of fossils.

Passport to ReligionsBR, JR, CAD, SR, AMBThe world is a vast and diverse place, and there are many different religions through-out. Learn more about religions around the world, including the different symbols, holy books, calendars, diet restrictions and places of worship.

B.T.U.F.—Be Tough All Grade LevelsThe B.T.U.F. patch program includes activities that focus on teaching girls how to incorporate kindness, strength, respect, wisdom and healthy relationships into their daily lives.

Why Tease Program Booklet Available in the council shops for BR, JRFeatured in a Chicago Tribune Magazine article about girls and bullying, this illustrat-ed booklet raises issues of how children sometimes treat each other and how it feels to be the one left out of the fun. Each scene focuses only on the children’s feet thus eliminating the common habit of stereotyp-ing people by physical appearance. Includes adult guide.

Global Action Award All Grade LevelsThe Girl Scouts Global Action patch activi-ties are fun, educational ways for Girl Scout Daisies through Ambassadors to learn about the eight United Nations’ Millennium Devel-opment Goals (MDGs) to fight poverty and other important world issues. By working on this patch program, Girl Scouts of all ages are joining the worldwide effort to address issues that affect girls and women around the world as well as issues that girls can de-velop take action projects about in our own communities, nationally or even interna-tionally. The MDGs are important platforms about which girls can center their Girl Scout Gold and Silver Awards.

Sisters in Scouting All Grade LevelsThe Sisters in Scouting patch program teaches girls of all ages about the impor-tance of diversity and acceptance. The activities will help familiarize troops and individuals with different religions, ethnic groups, family traditions and holidays. By participating in this patch program, girls will learn about accepting differences while discovering something about themselves along the way.
