Dear Friends, Happy August to all Teachers & Engineers! Hope you had a nice Summertime. I understand a new and exciting School Year is just about to begin for most of you. The following are important announcements for education and engineering around the Tampa Bay Area. Please continue to browse the Teacher In Service Lesson Plans at these URLs for topics: http://www.ieee.org/web/education/preuniversity/home.html or www.tryengineering.org. We want to assign an engineer to a project that is appropriate for your Science or Math Educators and their students. We encourage that every school examine this lesson plans. After this has been forwarded to the schools in your district, please pick a lesson plan ideal for your class and reply to me at [email protected]. I can ask and arrange with the schools for Engineers to come and demonstrate a presentation for your school. We ask all IEEE Members and Certified Engineers to volunteer with your local schools. Please let me know if you are volunteering, so that I can provide you with the attached surveys. Please have the teachers fill them out, collect them, scan & email, or mail them back to me. The IEEE is dedicated to helping all the districts get Engineering into Pre-College Curricula. We can arrange to do these anytime at the convenience of the schools and the engineers. We are offering effective and economical alternatives to promote engineering. We hope to inspire the educator to perform these activities themselves while enriching their Students. If the teachers and the volunteers work together, students have a better chance at successful careers. In the long run, it helps “The technological literacy of Tomorrow’s leaders. “ Please contact me anytime during the year to arrange availability of our Engineer Volunteers. PROFESSIONAL STUDY DAY OPPORTUNITIES
Pinellas Professional Study Day is August 16 at Seminole High School. Ralph
Painter is leading multiple presentations including Ohm's Law. Any IEEE member would be welcome to help coach that day.
FWCS EXCOM Minutes August 2, 2011 Page 16 of 23 The Hillsborough Professional Study Day is August 17, 2011, at Alonso High after
8:30am.
Hillsborough County Science Supervisor said, "We request your organization's
presence at our Professional Study Day, August 17, 2011, at Alonso High. I have
moved into a new position, Director of STEM, and will allow my replacement select
the program focus. This person should be named next week." Larry R. Plank, Ed.S.,
We need to find out from Larry Plank which time-slot would be ideal. Nobody
knows the room until the day of the event. Ralph Painter and I have been asking
what topic from www.tryengineering.org would be suitable. Ralph is going to do
Ohm's Law and a couple other presentations at Seminole High School on the
previous day, August 16th. He told me he will speak with Larry to offer to do some
projects for Hillsborough we've already done recently. We need to get the topic
arranged soon so that the main presenter orders the materials. If you would like to
either offer to lead a project or help coach with the main presenter, we can arrange
that.
Ken just informed us that he will be doing a presentation in YBor City:
Our professional study day in Hillsborough is scheduled for August 17th. I will be doing workshops involving
Electrathon, Junior Solar Sprint and tricks and traps with Excel. Greg Verril who is interested in becoming a RAS member
will
also be doing the Junior Solar Sprint with me. Our presentations will be at our Sam Horton Instructional Services Center
in Ybor. We are such a large District
that there are several locations.
I have to make sure we have someone at both locations and the
attached surveys
are filled out and sent to the IEEE in NJ, please?
Please contact me at [email protected] or Ralph Painter, [email protected], if you can lend a hand? Any help is
appreciated for August 16th in Pinellas or August 17th in Hillsborough.
SCIENCE FAIRS 2011-2012: Please forward me the dates for the Regional & State Science Fairs coming up for the 2011-2012 School Year. GREAT AMERICAN TEACH-IN: So that I can get the help needed, please forward me the dates, schools, and registration forms for the annual GREAT AMERICAN TEACH-IN for November as soon as they are available. REQUEST:

Hi Sean-
I'm hoping you can help connect a local high school student to the engineering
activities in your area. Maria was here in the Midwest visiting friends and
attending a summer engineering camp and stopped by to discuss her future
studies. As you are local for her, I hope you can connect her and her mom
(copied on this message) to local opportunities.
Thanks!

EMBS Chapter Report From: John West [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Wednesday, August 31, 2011 10:04 AM
Subject: EMBS
Ralph,
I was going through my notes, and I don't believe that I sent you information about our last EMBS meeting (for the last EXCOM notes).
In summary: On Thursday, July 14, 2011, the local PE/IA and EMBS chapters jointly sponsored another tour of the Tampa LabCorp Facility. The previous tour was in October 2010. This tour recapped the areas that we saw last year and included some new areas. There were 12 attendees at the event.
I have also attached the article that was submittedfor the Signal.
I will remember to do this in the future. I know that it is hard to hear everyone who is speaks during EXCOM, and also difficult to capture all of the details during the meeting.
Best Regards, John West EMBS Treasurer, FWCS, IEEE

Lab Corp visit report Did you miss it? On Thursday, July 14, 2011, the local PE/IA and EMBS chapters jointly sponsored another tour of the Tampa LabCorp Facility. The previous tour was in October 2010. This tour recapped the areas that we saw last year and included some new areas. There were 12 attendees at the event. When your doctor prescribes a blood test, or takes a sample for culture, there is a chance that your samples were delivered here, or to one of the 150 LabCorp sites throughout the state, for testing. This facility processes samples from Florida, Mexico, and the Caribbean, and mostly within a 24 hour period. The tour was led by Dr. Thomas Herman, the facility’s Technical Director. The tour covered the process from accessioning, through some of the various tests that your doctor may have ordered. (CBC-Complete Blood Count, Blood Glucose, and Blood Enzyme tests, to name a few). The tour continued through the microbiology and molecular testing labs. Unlike the first part of the tour that utilizes mostly automated equipment, these labs use a mixture of both skilled manual and automated analysis to complete the testing. These labs help to identify various organisms, like strep, staph, and E. Coli bacteria, as well as test their susceptibility or resistance to possible drug therapies; all with a 24 hour turnaround time. The Tampa LabCorp facility is the headquarters for the Florida region and processes approximately 40,000 samples every day, on a 24/7 schedule, using very sophisticated, sensitive, and highly automated equipment from companies like Siemens, Beckman-Coulter, Sysmex, and others, each with specialized infrastructure and utility requirements. The LabCorp facilities are standardized, so samples can be easily
FWCS EXCOM Minutes August 2, 2011 Page 20 of 23
diverted to another LabCorp facility in the event of inclement weather or natural disasters. Dr. Herman said that the trend towards automation has been driven, in part, by the anticipated retirement of 50% of the Medical Technologists in the next 5 years. In addition to the obvious process improvements that automation provides, it is interesting to know that automation has also resulted in the 1000x reduction in the required sample size for some tests; from 5 milliliters, down to 5 microliters. Special thanks to Dr. Herman for opening the facility to our group and for taking the time to share his knowledge and enthusiasm.

Educational Activities Board (EAB) e-mail on TryComputing.org lesson plan review meeting From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Saturday, July 23, 2011 10:59 PM

Subject: TISP Symposium in Tampa and a new request
Hello Jim, Hope all is well with you. We will begin our planning telecons on the TISP Symposium shortly. I am asking Lynn to do a doodle poll to find the best time to schedule the first call. On a slightly different note: We are interested in having a small meeting in the Tampa Bay area with a few Computer Society volunteers and others for a review of materials for a new TryComputing.org portal that is being developed. The leader of the initiative Liz Burd thought it would be great to have the meeting in your area, since there are a couple of Comp Soc folks in the area and we can take a sneak peak at the venues for the Symposium next year. Would it be possible for you to provide your suggestions on a hotel that would be suitable for a meeting of about 8-10 people for 17 September? More than likely sleeping accommodations would be for two nights 16-17 Sept for the out-of-towners, perhaps 4-5 guests. We also ask you to recommend 1 or 2 local teachers that may be interested in participating in review of the computing lesson plans. We would cover all expenses for the teachers. Please let me know your thoughts and recommendations Thanks -Yvonne Yvonne Pelham Manager, Educational Outreach IEEE Educational Activities 445 Hoes Lane Piscataway, NJ 08854 1 732 562 5321 (Phone) 1 732 981 1686 (Fax) [email protected] www.ieee.org/education www.tryengineering.org IEEE - Advancing Technology for Humanity
