By Dr. Eric R. Tepper, Podiatrist GOUT Gout is a form of arthritis that occurs when uric acid accumulates in the body's joint fluids. It develops when the body produces excess uric acid or fails to efficiently eliminate it through the kidneys and urine. Gout usually begins with a sudden onset of intense pain in one or more joints, often the big toe joint. Redness, swelling, and warmth over the joint accompany pain. Wearing shoes is difficult and painful, and it hurts to move the joint or stand. Oral anti-inflammatory medications are often prescribed to manage acute attacks of gout. To treat the con- dition effectively, a doctor must establish whether it was caused by excess production of uric acid or a failure to properly eliminate it. The good news is there is no reason to continue to experience foot discomfort due to gout. We turn to the most advanced treatment for problems of the foot and ankle, always with a gentle and caring approach. That's the reason why so many adults, seniors, and children continue to seek our help whenever, it is needed. We make taking care of your feet, your body, and your well-being easy. Call 234-5571, at Rice Medical Center, for an appointment. I am there every Tuesday. P.S. Acute attacks of gout may be caused by eating purine-rich foods, such as red meats, shellfish, beer, red wine, or salt. Rice Medical Center Invites the Public to A Reception Honoring Dr. Russell Thomas, Jr. An informal reception honoring Dr. Russell for his almost twenty years of service to our community will be held on Tuesday, February 1, 2000 at the Eagle Lake Community Center from 6 to 8 p.m. Presentations will begin at 7 p.m. and refreshments will be served. Dr. Russell has accepted the position as Director of Residency Programs for the Central Texas Medical Foundation in Austin. His last day at the Thomas Clinic will be February 2nd. Please join us as we show our appreciation to Dr. Russell for his countless hours of dedication and support to our community. Dr. Russell Thomas, Jr.

GOUT Gout is a form of arthritis that occurs when uric acid accumulates in the body's

joint fluids.
