Come Soft 0ains sti'' wor5ed norma''y unti' this day- . Citi(ens are tired of !ein oppressed and
are 'oo5in for an escape p'an hence the reason Harrison escapes from prison and fami'ies
re'ocate to 6ars. Fortunate'y& fami'ies in There /i'' Come Soft 0ains have mana ed to escape
from 8arth where radioactive !om!in s are common&to 6ars& which is much safer& un'i5e
Harrisonn who is e'iminated. However& the Ber erons in Harrison Ber eron have !een rendered
he'p'ess since they are !ein contro''ed usin techno'o ica' machines. 2n !oth stories there is a
re!e': a fami'y in There /i'' Come Soft 0ains& and Harrison in Harrison Ber eron. n the other

survive the chaos and he is assassinated on 'ive te'evision. n arriva' in 6ars& the war survivors
destroy everythin re'ated to the earth& !ecause they have seen the imp'ications of techno'o ica'
advancements in a deve'oped country. They never want to e,perience such a scenario ever a ain&
hence the reason they em!race the 6artian way.
Comparisons
Ne ative use of techno'o y is a common factor in !oth stories. This essay descri!es
ne ative imp'ications of techno'o y as e,p'ained !y The 6artian Chronic'es. 2n Harrison
Ber eron& the overnment has come up with techno'o ica' methods of oppressin the inte''i ent
popu'ation9 !y interferin with their thin5in capacity. 2t is a'so unfortunate that techno'o y is so
advanced in There /i'' Come Soft 0ains yet instead of usin it positive'y& the overnment is
a''owin assem!'in of radioactive !om!s.
0e!e''iousness is a'so a common factor in !oth stories. Harrison re!e's !y runnin away
from prison in an effort to 'oo5 for freedom without oppression. However& his freedom is short3
'ived since he is shot !y Diana 6oon +'ampers short'y afterwards. 2n There /i'' Come Soft
0ains& the characters re'ocate to 6ars where they are p'annin to start a new 'ife without fear of
another nuc'ear war. *They further convince their sons to !e 6artians !ecause they had
e,perienced the effects of techno'o ica' advancement of nuc'ear weapons first3hand in America-
ppression is a'so a common factor in the two stories. For instance& when Harrison was
arrested& he was wei hed down with ## pounds of meta'& hu e earphones& and !i 'asses meant
to !'ind him. This was a vio'ation of his !asic human ri hts. *The hea'thy citi(ens in Harrison
Ber eron are forced to act disa!'ed in fear of prosecution since the e)ua'ity ri hts were amended

in "%%& "%"& and "% - . 2n addition& a'' citi(ens are wei hed down to counteract their
racefu'ness. 2n There /i'' Come Soft 0ains& there is radioactive nuc'ear war where peop'e are
5i''ed and anima's die due the the radioactive effect of the !om!. The fact that fami'ies had to
move to 6ars for safety was a denia' of their ri ht to 'ive in a safe environment as dictated in the
United States constitution. The constitution states that it is the overnment;s o!'i ation to
provide its citi(ens with hea'thfu' harmfu' environments
Conclusion
The two stories are ri ht to criti)ue their authoritarian overnments since they are too
!usy enforcin techno'o ica' advancements which are !ein app'ied to oppressin and 5i''in the
citi(ens. As per the 6artian Chronic'es& the Harrison Ber eron story is the most distur!in story&
!ecause his mother had to watch her son;s death on 'ive te'evision. *2t is c'ear that nature wi''a'ways prevai' even after civi'i(ation and humanity is destroyed- .
