Building with CO2

Every year, about 30 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide is pumped into the Earth’s atmosphere from power plants, cars and other industrial sources that rely on fossil fuels.

Even though Carbon sequestration , a process in which gas is stored underground has emerged, there are still many unknowns surrounding the safety and effectiveness of that strategy.

• Belcher, an MIT engineer along with

two of her graduate students, have created a process that can convert carbon dioxide into carbonates.

• They isolated the enzyme abalone which is used to mineralize the CO2 and they engineered a batch of yeast to produce it.

• This genetically modified yeast con-verts CO2 gas into solid, carbon-based building materials.

When compared to chemical process to capture carbon dioxide

Biological system captures carbon dioxide at a higher rate.

Biological system requires no heating or cooling.

No toxic chemicals are used.

A beaker full of genetically modified yeast can produce 2 pounds (1 kilogram) of solid carbonate from only 1 pound (0.5 kilograms) of C02 . Imagine how many car-bon bricks they could make with 30 billion metric tons of CO2.

PERMEABLE CON-CRETE

Page 10: Futuristic construction

Permeable concrete During a heavy storm, sheets of rainwater pour down on roadways, sidewalks and parking lots, scouring up surface debris and pollutants and washing poten-tially toxic chemicals like gasoline directly into sewers and streams.

Engineers have created a new type of permeable concrete that allows rainwater to pass right through pavement.

As rainwater passes down through soil levels, microorganisms and plant roots absorb excess chemicals.

Permeable concrete• Permeable or Pervious concrete is made with larger grains of

rock and sand, leaving between 15 and 35 percent of open space in the pavement .

• Slabs of permeable concrete are laid atop gravel or another porous base material that lets rainwater settle to the soil substrate be-neath.

• Permeable concrete is an excellent replacement for asphalt in park-ing lots.

• Not only does it significantly decrease runoff, but also the lighter colour of concrete reflects sunlight and stays cooler in the summer.

Benefits :Volume Reduction & Flood Control: Because water flows through porous pavement, the volume of runoff generated during a storm event is significantly decreased or eliminated altogether. This reduction in volume results in flood control.

Road Safety and Durability: Porous pavement increases skid res-istance and traction on wet surfaces. Pavement lifespan also increases.

Water Quality: Pollutants are captured during infiltration, reducing pollutant load to local waterways. Infiltrated runoff recharges groundwater supplies.

Over the centuries, engineers and architects have devised ever-new ways to build taller, stronger and more beautiful creations……………..

“Hope there comes a day when noisy construction crews are replaced by swarms of autonomous nano-bots…The cracks in concrete foundations one day miraculously heal themselves…carbon bricks replacing traditional bricks, Step ladder technology and all roads are paved with permeable concrete…”
