China’s holdings of U.S. Treasuriesfell to a more than one-year low asthe world’s second-largest econo-my takes steps to stabilize the yuan, which is under pressure from thetrade war.
The Asian nation’s holdings ofU.S. bonds, bills and notes declinedfor a fourth month to $1.15 trillionin September, from $1.17 trillion inAugust, the Treasury Departmentsaid in a statement Friday.
China remained the biggest for-eign creditor to the U.S., followedby Japan, whose Treasury holdingswere little changed at $1.03 trillion.
The data comes as the U.S. andChina resumetrade talkswith Pres-ident Donald Trump and China’sXi Jinping scheduled to meet at theGroup of 20 summit in Argentina, which begins Nov. 30.
In preparation for a potential dealfrom those talks, China has present-ed a list of possible concessions, which Trump said on Friday leftout “four or five” big items the U.S.wants.
“China wants tomake a deal.Theysent a list of things they are willingto do, which is a large list and it isjust not acceptable to me yet. But at
some point I think that, we aredoing extremely well with respecttoChina,” Trump told reporters.
Investors are searching for anyclues China may pare back its vastholding of U.S. Treasuries to retali-ate against U.S. tariffs, thoughBeijing has given no indication it’sdoing so. So far the U.S. has im-posed duties on $250 billion worthof Chinese imports, and Trumpsaid on Friday he has another $267billion of goods targeted if the na-tions fail to reach a truce.
“We may not have to do that,” hesaid. “China would like to make adeal.”
China may be allowing its foreign-exchange reserves to decline aspart of a policy to stabilize the yuanand prevent it from weakening fur-ther.
Thecurrency alreadyhas depreci-ated more than 4% against the dol-lar in the past year amid signs of aneconomic slowdown and capitaloutflows.
China’s foreign-exchange re-serves stockpile fell by $22 billionin September to touch the lowestlevel since July 2017, suggestingthat the People’s Bank of Chinamay have stepped in to stabilize theyuan.
