Future mobility: An industry in transformation.
FUTURE MOBILITY: AN INDUSTRY IN TRANSFORMATION2
Hardly any other industry is currently undergoing such a transformation as the mobility sector. The future of mobility is not merely the subject of lively debate in the media. Technological developments and the demand for eco-friendly and sustainable transport alternatives are driving the enormous changes in the mobility industry and are creating new business models. The IDnow report provides an overview.
How will people get from A to B in the future? Will inner cities soon be
dominated by e-scooters instead of cars? Will autonomous taxis bring us to our
destination? These are all questions that concern not just cities and regions but,
above all, the automotive industry.
Management consultancy Roland Berger identified four decisive megatrends; new mobility services, autonomous driving, digitization and electrification.
These trends have a massive impact on our understanding of mobility and
present the classic automotive industry, in particular, with new challenges but
also with opportunities: The demand for vehicles designed specifically for
mobility services is growing and, unlike in the past, the focus is specifically on
the needs of passengers rather than the drivers.
According to Bitkom, the shift towards electromobility, in particular, is leading
to greater competition, as the barriers to market entry are falling significantly. An
electric car is much easier to design than a vehicle with a combustion engine, drive
train, and exhaust system. As a result, new players, for instance those from the
digital sector, are developing into serious competitors for the established providers.

Vehicle use will change significantly. While the current focus is on individual transport and ownership, new concepts and services will come into the limelight in the upcoming years. In its study “Five trends transforming the Automotive Industry”, the consulting firm PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) concluded that by 2030 one in three kilometers driven could be accounted for by car-sharing concepts.
At present, less than 1 percent of all journeys in Europe are made using car-
sharing services, but PwC expects fully automated cars with Level 4 approval
for autonomous driving to enter the market in 2022. These will initially be aimed
primarily at the car-sharing market and will give it an enormous boost, as the
human cost factor is eliminated.
HIGH AUTOMATION
The vehicle is capable of steering, braking, accelerating, monitoring the environment
and roadway as well as responding to events, determining when to change lanes,
turn, and use signals. The driver is able to take control but doesn’t have to.
COMPLETE AUTOMATION
This level of autonomous driving requires absolutely no human attention. There is no need
for pedals, brakes, or a steering wheel, as the autonomous vehicle system controls all
critical tasks, monitoring of the environment and identification of unique driving conditions.
The 5 Levels of Autonomous Driving
DRIVER ASSISTANCE
The driver is in full control of the vehicle, but there are some assisting functions like
cruise control.
PARTIAL AUTOMATION
The vehicle can assist with steering or acceleration functions, but the driver must
always be ready to take control.
CONDITIONAL AUTOMATION
The vehicle itself controls all monitoring of the environment. The driver may temporarily
turn away from the driving task, but must be able to take control on short notice.
FUTURE MOBILITY: AN INDUSTRY IN TRANSFORMATION5
This development will be driven primarily by a young,
technophile generation that attaches importance to
comfortable and environmentally-friendly mobility
alternatives.
Technological innovations shape the everyday lives of the
members of this generation and a sustainable and healthy
lifestyle is important to them. Cars are pragmatically seen
purely as a means of transport; in generations Y and Z, they
lose their significance as status symbols. While individual
transport will remain important in rural areas, a major shift
towards new mobility solutions can be expected in urban
areas. The consultants are certain that intermodal passenger
transport (i.e., the use of cars in conjunction with public
transport) will become increasingly widespread, especially in
cities. Both car-sharing and ride-hailing services will become
established – the motto is “use instead of own”. However,
not just the young, tech-oriented generation will benefit
from altered mobility concepts. Easier market access will
also benefit physically handicapped people or those who do
not have a driving license.
PwC assumes that by 2030, 40 percent of all passenger-kilometers will be driven
by autonomous cars and the total number of passenger-kilometers will increase
significantly. At the same time, the total number of vehicles will decrease.
Nevertheless, this is a huge opportunity for automotive suppliers: Although
the number of vehicles will fall, shared services will ensure far better vehicle
utilization. As a result of almost constant usage, cars will have to be replaced
much more frequently in the future – which will ultimately lead to rising sales.

FUTURE MOBILITY: AN INDUSTRY IN TRANSFORMATION6
Together with these innovative companies, IDnow has found a simple,
fast solution to bring mobility models into the digital age.
As is so often the case, this major change represents both a challenge and an
opportunity. The industry itself must remain mobile: Those who identify trends
early and act accordingly have a clear advantage.

Digitization in public transport.
Online ID verification as a success factor for the mobility platform of the Rhein-Main Transport Association (Verkehrsverbund).
The importance of a sustainable and climate-friendly mobility offering in both
urban and rural areas has steadily increased in recent years and has reached the
center of the transport policy of the State of Hessen and the Federal Republic
of Germany. The so-called traffic turnaround is on everyone’s lips, and the
reduction of environmental pollution is absolutely necessary. At the same time,
thanks to digitization, the widespread use of smartphones and the mobile
Internet, the demands and expectations of customers are growing. Customers
have to be in the spotlight 24/7: they want to receive up-to-date information
anytime, anywhere and ideally also want to be mobile. The Rhein-Main
Verkehrsverbund (RMV) operates in the middle of these expectations and must
offer tailor-made solutions and answers.
FUTURE MOBILITY: AN INDUSTRY IN TRANSFORMATION9
This is precisely where RMV, as an innovation driver and pioneer in the
public transport sector, comes into play and, as one of the largest transport
associations, is committed to developing a mobility platform. In the future, it will
no longer be just bus and rail. Open, flexible and modern, the platform to be
launched at the end of 2020 intends to offer customers not only the traditional
means of transport, but also local and regional mobility providers from cars,
bikes, eScooters and ridesharing, as well as taxis. A successful RMV app will offer
the entire service chain: information - booking - payment - travel with just one
registration and billing. RMV, as a broker of complementary mobility options,
is thus continuously developing and expanding its role as a strong partner in
the mobility network. In order to realize the new offering and win over partners
to participate in the platform, reliable and robust registration is the first step.
With its wealth of experience with RMV-HandyTicket, RMV-TicketShop, and its
personalization of meinRMV, RMV has already created an excellent basis. When
considering the platform, it quickly became clear that, among other things, the
identity card and driving license test would be the key to participation for the
partners. For this reason, in the course of a tender, RMV found a trustworthy,
professional provider in IDnow, which is active in various industries.

The Rhein-Main-Verkehrsverbund (RMV) is one of the largest German transport
associations. It coordinates and organizes regional bus and rail transport over an
area of around 14,000 square kilometers. Approximately 5 million people live in
the area covered by the network, or 6.7 million if you include the inhabitants of
the transitional tariff zones.
The transport association was launched in 1995 and transports 788 million
passengers annually. That is around 2.5 million per working day.
Since 2009, Markus Huber (50) has been Head of Innovation and New Business
Sectors at Rhein-Main-Verkehrsverbund GmbH (RMV), focusing on the
development of information, ticketing and value-added services for e- and
m-commerce. Together with his team, he develops ideas and business models
for the introduction and operation of new products and services in the field of
public transport and mobility.
Till Sommerfeld (36) works for Rhein-Main-Verkehrsverbund
GmbH (RMV) in the area of innovation and new business
sectors. His responsibilities include the management of
research and development projects with a focus on inter-
and multimodality and electric mobility. He is also involved
in the sustainable development of the mobile and digital
RMV sales and information channels and the strategic
development of the innovation and mobility network. He is

Car with a subscription.
Cluno is a new, flexible mobility concept: the digital car subscription. A car subscription is suitable for anyone who wants to be mobile with their own car.
Cluno thinks about all processes involving the car in a completely digital and
innovative way. The company helps customers, depending on their current living
situation and needs, to find the right type of mobility in an uncomplicated way and
thus becomes a permanent mobility partner. Cluno customers simply book their
car online or via the app and pay a fixed monthly package price, which includes all
costs except refueling. After six months of minimum running time per vehicle, they
can change cars, pause or terminate their usage.
The company was founded by Christina Polleti, Nico Polleti, and Andreas
Schuierer. The three founders have many years of experience in the automotive
and Internet industry. Cluno is supported by leading venture capital investors
such as Valar Ventures, Acton Capital Partners and Atlantic Labs.
FUTURE MOBILITY: AN INDUSTRY IN TRANSFORMATION12
Micro-mobility for more sustainable cities.
The term micro-mobility is used to describe electrically powered miniature vehicles such as electric bicycles or e-scooters. They are used primarily in cities as alternatives to conventional means of transport. And business is booming: According to a recent study by McKinsey, by 2030, these offers should generate sales of up to 150 billion dollars in Europe and as much as 500 billion dollars worldwide.
In 10 years, over 10 percent of the kilometers traveled could be covered via
micro-mobility offers – which would lead to savings of 80,000 tons of CO2
emissions in Munich alone. The interest is clearly there: 77 percent of those
surveyed by McKinsey said that they could imagine making the daily commute to
work with an electric scooter.
TIER Mobility was founded in 2018 and now has over 470 employees. The
pioneer in the field of micro-mobility is now active in over 57 cities in eleven
countries and has secured financing of over 100 million dollars - the highest
financing round ever for a European provider in the field of micro-mobility.
TIER Mobility aims to change mobility in our cities for the better with a
groundbreaking new concept and therefore works together with cities, public
transport companies and communities. With a fleet of electric scooters, TIER
Mobility offers its users complete independence to move around the city in
a relaxed and affordable way without harming the environment. A new, much
more conscious way to commute!
FUTURE MOBILITY: AN INDUSTRY IN TRANSFORMATION13
The company itself sets a good example: since January 2020,
TIER Mobility has been completely climate neutral. The micro-
mobility top dog not only includes the emissions generated by
charging the e-scooters in its calculations, but also all emissions
from production, operation and transport. The commitment
to climate neutrality not only helps the environment, but also
secures a path to a sustainable future.
TIER Mobility has more than 5,000 e-scooters, including
charging infrastructure. To ensure that users have a proper
and valid driving license, the Berlin-based start-up is working
together with IDnow. With the help of AutoIdent, the document
can be checked in real-time.
