the Intergovernmental Science-Policy
Platform on Biodiversity and
Ecosystem Services (IPBES) runs
from April 29 through May 4, 2019 in
Paris, France. A Future Earth
delegation is attending. The week-long
meeting will conclude on May 6 with
the release of the first Global
Assessment Report on Biodiversity
and Ecosystem Services since 2005,
including contributions from experts in
the Future Earth community. Follow

Kickstart of the First Science for Earth
System Targets Workshop The first
Science Earth System Targets
Workshop was held in Montreal,
Canada, from 28-29 March 2019. The
workshop, titled “Building science-
based targets for Canadian
ecosystems leveraging digital tools”,
convened 16 Canadian
representatives from industry,
government, and systems science. It
was an explorative meeting to discuss
what is currently happening in Canada
and globally. We acknowledge the
support of the Natural Sciences and
Engineering Research Council of
Canada (NSERC) in helping Future
Earth organize this event.
Google Earth Engine:
Planetary scale analysis for
societal benefit
Following the Science for Earth
Targets workshop, the Montreal Hub
launched its “Dialogues on
Sustainability in the Digital Age” series
with an inaugural talk given by Noel
Gorelick, Chief Extraterrestrial
Observer at Google. Noel presented
Google Earth Engine, a data analysis
and visualization platform that allows
users to measure, monitor, and map
the environment at a planetary scale,
and discussed how this platform can
be used for societal benefit. Click here
