Highlights of progress on 26th SOFE 2015• The 26th Symposium on Fusion Engineering co-located

with the PPC (Pulsed Power Conference) and held in Austin, Texas between May 31 and June 4, 2015– SOFE-26 General chair: Jean Paul Allain and Technical Program

chair: Mark Tillack, UC San Diego

– PPC General chair is Mark Crawford and Technical Program Chair: David Wetz, UT-Arlington

• First Call of Papers sent out in late October and Abstract submission opened November 10, 2014

• Work on website with Lisa Mattox (Sandia) and Chuck (UNM)

• Advertisement for SOFE 2015 at the American Physical Society, Division of Plasma Physics meeting and to various major fusion research centers around the world

• Allain is also now actively working with UT Austin and Texas A&M who will participate in SOFE 2015 and provide student volunteer help for the same.

Highlights of progress on 26th SOFE 2015• Mark Tillack is setting up an exciting program for our

SOFE conference

• Emergent themes to be highlighted: Innovative divertor solutions

• Interest in fusion technology is strengthening based on the new re-structuring of DOE Fusion program. Two of the Four primary research areas are technology-focused: Materials and Fusion Nuclear Science

• The SOFE Mini Course will be led by Prof. Davide Curreli and Prof. Daniel Andruzcyk. Both are assistant professors and part of a strategy to recruit and integrate early-career scientists in IEEE-NPSS Fusion Technology Committee activities to provide leadership opportunities and visibility

Engaging Asia and Europe on fusion engineering and technology areas

• Allain and Tillack have engaged with Chinese Fusion Institutes:

• Purpose: To sustain the increasing levels of participation of Chinese fusion engineers in SOFE given the increased activities in tokamak devices there

• Actions:

• FTC has invited Dr. Xuru Duan, Director from the Center for Fusion Science at the Southwestern Institute of Physics in Chengdu, China to join FTC.

• We have also invited Jiming Cheng (Southwestern Institute of Physics) and Yuntao Song (Inst. of Plasma Phys. Chinese Academy of Science) have joined SOFE-26 technical program committee

• Hutch Neilson visited with our Chinese colleagues at ASIPP (Institute of Plasma Physics Chinese Academy of Sciences) and USTC and are enthusiastic to host SOFE-2017 in China. The FTSC will plan to hold a vote at our next technical committee meeting in early December.

• We will have participation from: Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Laussane (Center for Plasma Physics), ITER headquarters in Cadarache, France, and the CNA in Sevilla, Spain at SOFE 2015
