Its the action, not the fruit of the action, thats important. You have to do the rightthing. It may not be in your power, may not be in your time, that therell be anyfruit. But that doesnt mean you stop doing the right thing. You may never know

what results come from your action. But if you do nothing, there will be no result.

    I n t r o d u c t i o nMillions of people in the United Kingdom today are living below the standards set

by society. Despite the fact that the UK is a much wealthier country, levels of

deprivation are going back to the levels found thirty years ago.

Households below minimum standard 1983 2012

Percentage lacking three or more necessities 14% 33%

(The Impoverishment of the UK 2013 PSE UK)

Di the thee moth eiod that the Commissio was ie to be comleted the

most commo qestio asked has bee: What is oety?

poety acoss Fess esets itself i may foms ad bis with it a day-to-day

stle fo the idiidals csed by it.

pete Towsed, a socioloist, defied oety i 1979:

Idiidals, families ad os i the olatio ca be said to be i oety whe

they lack esoces to obtai the tye of diet, aticiate i the actiities ad hae the

lii coditios ad ameities which ae cstomay, o at least widely ecoaed

ad aoed, i the societies i which they belo. (CpAg Website)

So oety i Fess is like oety we see i thid wold coties bt it is elatie to

the exected lii stadads tyical i o coty. peole i oety i Fess ae

faci the lack of ability to choose what they ca eat, what they ad thei families ca

wea ad whee they ca o. They lack icome ad esoces to ese they ca lead

a hay, healthy lifestyle ad aticiate flly i society. Iceasily this is the eality

fo eole whethe they lie i the tows of Fess o ockets of al oety acoss

the may illaes that sa o eisla.

We dew a list of qestios we felt eeded

    of this eot:

How extensive is poverty across Furness?

What are the causes of poverty across Furness?

What does poverty actually look like across Furness?

What are the effects of poverty on children?

How are different organisations working to tackle

    multiple deprivations?

How can we help people move out of poverty?

Thohot this eot we seek to aswe these

qestios i a sccict way ad defie the best ways

    Moving on from here

The key thing I have learned is that schools, as the hubs of our communities, areoften the first places to be able to identify issues relating to poverty, through

children and parents. They also play a key role in ensuring families in povertyreceive the support they need at an early stage. We need to recognise this and

give our schools proper support to cope with the issues as they become aware of

them. Schools need practical support so the staff can provide this earlyintervention without it affecting their day job of delivering education.

    Janet Willis Councillor Low Furness

We kow the case of oety stems fom eithe low icome, iadeqate beefits o

Furness Poverty Commission is an excellent first step in developing ourunderstanding of poverty in the area. Im pleased to have been a part of the

Commission and make some small contribution. Poverty has a crushing effect oncommunities everywhere but Im grateful I live in Barrow where people care abouttheir neighbours, family and friends. Every day I see people willing to help others

get through the day to day problems life throws up. I hope this report helps

galvanise that sense of community so we can all do our bit locally to help thosestruggling in difficult times.
