Message to the Community . . .“We make a living by what we get; we make a life by what we give.”

— Sir Winston Churchill

This quote from Churchill is as true today as it was years ago,”…we make a life by what we give”. The continued generous support from

the Monroe community shows the value placed on our community by our donors. In this fiscal year, we were able to award over 100 scholarships, start fourteen new funds: CASA, Heritage Resources, Humane Society Animal Care, Women In Philanthropy (WIP), Access to Recreation, Brent Ansted Memorial Scholarship, MSM Scholarship, Roy Sanders Memorial Scholarship MILAN FUNDS: Aid in Milan, Evelyn (Hitchingham) Gerstenberg Scholarship, Milan Area Schools Board of Education Scholarship, Ethel Richards Scholarship, David Glenn Memorial Scholarship, The Ronnie & Paulette Shores Scholarship and host several collaborative efforts for the betterment of the area. We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who made this possible.

This year we have been presented with many challenges but along with the challenges came opportunities. The Community Foundation has faced these events head on and are thinking of more creative ways to achieve solutions and do business different and more efficiently. Some of our greatest opportunities come unexpectedly.

In spite of the difficult economic times, the Community Foundation of Monroe County has continued to grow as guided by a wonderful Board of Trustees. This is no time for us to pull back and reduce our expectations for many more citizens are depending on all of us for support. We will continue to strive to achieve our mission; “To encourage and facilitate philanthropy in Monroe County.” We endeavor to promote growth of permanent endowment funds from a wide range of donors.

On behalf of the Board of Trustees and staff of the Community Foundation of Monroe County, thank you for your generous support.

Women in PhilanthropyNationwide, women are increasingly influential in family decisions about charitable giving. Recognizing this, the Community Foundation of Monroe County, through a group of dedicated women is looking to establish Women in Philanthropy. This group is a philanthropic community uniting powerful, visionary women who are committed to effecting lasting fundamental change. Purpose of Women in Philanthropy:

• Ensure that women have the information they need to be effective philanthropists.

• Provide financial support to community organizations dedicated to improving the Monroe County area.

• Continue to grow ongoing and mutually beneficial relationships with our community.

• Develop generations of women philanthropists.

The power of many women giving together has a tremendous impact. Consider the strength of numbers. Women in Philanthropy will organize with others to provide a pooled gift that can make an impossible project possible. In this way we

can respond to community wide needs with focused grants. We can teach the art of philanthropy to the next generation, instilling in children and grandchildren the values we treasure. All of the contributions will go into the Women Philanthropy Endowed Fund. The interest generated from the fund will provide the grants to the community.

Can you imagine living in a County that is located on a great lake and not being able to observe the fauna and wildlife, nor fish in its water? Can you imagine living in a County that is steep in historical significance to the State and region, yet not having the opportunity to visit the historical sites enjoyed by other visitors? Thousands of Monroe County residents, because of age, physical or mental challenges, cannot enjoy the basic recreational opportunities of our community.

In the fall of 2006 the Community Foundation of Monroe County

was awarded a $385,000 Access to Recreation matching grant funded by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation through the Midwest Community Foundations’ Ventures (MCFV). Through a broad based community needs workgroup, four recreational projects were selected to receive funding for increasing the site’s accessibility:• Monroe Township for an universally accessible playground at their Township Hall.• City of Monroe for sensory garden path at Veterans Park.•Monroe County Historical Museum for a historical path at the Navarre Anderson Trading Post.• DNR for universally accessible fishing pier, pods, and interpretive signage along the DNR path that connects Sterling State Park to Elm Avenue.

In addition, a permanent Access to Recreation Endowment Fund is being established. The income from the endowment will provide ongoing support for these and future accessibility projects in Monroe County.

The Community Foundation of Monroe is proud of this collaboration and look forward to enhancing the quality of life to the citizens of Monroe County and beyond.

Milan Affiliate ReportBecause of the generosity of our donors, we are not only building lasting endowments, but community trust as well, as we continue to work toward creating awareness of the foundation throughout the Milan area.

As the economic climate has become more uncertain, both individuals and charities realize, more strongly than ever before, the importance of permanent

community capital. We are pleased to report that since 2005 the returns from “permanent community capital” have provided our local non-profits, here in the Milan area, grants totaling $58,000.

During the past year the Milan Public Library has transferred four of the library’s endowed funds to the foundation and a new Milan

Area Schools Alumni Scholarship Fund has been established as well.

We thank our donors and volunteers for believing in our community so strongly that they have invested their resources to our care.

Together we can continue to do good things.
